jdslp
It just amazes me how people have to go into debt during the application process alone. Sure I could've spent thousands of dollars in app fees, transcripts, GRE scores, visiting campuses, etc. But I don't have that kind of money nor do I feel comfortable putting it on my credit card (again). I've been there, done that. I'm becoming so disheartened I can't even focus in my daily routine. I'm obsessively checking my statuses and emails every chance I get. I try to explain this whole process to those who are not familiar with it and they think it's nuts and that it's making me nuts. Someone posted the info they obtained about USF's admissions process...they said 200 people were on the waitlist!? Say what!? Okay so math is not my best subject but c'mon isn't that a little ridiculous!? Why torture people w/ such crappy odds. Then I wonder about the schools I've been waitlisted for...are they running similar numbers? Sorry but I'm venting to people I know will understand where I'm coming from. hopefulslp88, denrox17 and Nebraska19
ald360
Anyone else noticing the trend of schools leaving people in the dark by only sending out like 5 emails to people a day? I get my hopes up, but then I get nothing this has happen 2x now. I call the office and get "they're still reviewing" when obviously they've done some decision making... Would it kill them to send statuses all at once? you know its not like my future hangs on them. This is my second time applying and haven't heard any good news yet so its very discouraging waiting and waiting being left to assume I didn't get in. Applied: Towson, Radford, Mercy, Montclair, and New Paltz Rejected: Towson, New Paltz Wait listed: Radford Accepted: NOWHERE yet! Interviewed at Mercy...still waiting and waiting on Montclair. Sorry I sound ranty...it's so emotionally draining as many of us know and for those of us who haven't gotten the golden email/phone call/letter it just makes it extra strained as we get closer to mid april. i hope that you get some great news as this week comes to an end!!! i am still waiting on montclair as well.. i haven't heard a word from them since i submitted my application in the first week of december -- if it's a rejection i would rather just know, i don't get what's taking so long! chellinchen
It is reassuring to hear that SO MANY schools are behind in their admissions decisions. It makes me think back to how St. Cloud said there were "complications" this year and wonder what the heck happened? Surely not all these school went off schedule in the same manner? This is also the first year that St. Cloud had an interview day, but only one person mentioned it on the boards. I'd be interested to know if it was the same person who received a wait list notification (which is apparently the only decisions that have been sent out yet?). So frustrating - I mean, if you know who is on the wait list, then don't you at least know who isn't getting in? I thought that by now I would have been able to give my notice at work (if I'd been accepted somewhere) or know that I would be here for another year / looking for a new job. Instead, my boss is spending a couple thousand dollars to send me to a training conference & I might be leaving in a few months (hopefully. Fingers crossed). So much guilt, but I can't burn the bridge here until I know I have somewhere to go. I have a concrete plan for if I do get in & another for if I don't. I'd just like to start moving forward, rather than lingering in limbo land. Ugh. Rant over. Maybe today will be the day?
SLP1990
Rejected from UCF today, but kicked butt during my interview for San Francisco State!!! The biggest piece of advice I can give anyone at this point is to apply to as many programs as financially possible! Give yourself some options, and remember that each school has a unique admissions process, and each program is looking for different things in each applicant. I have gotten rejected from schools I thought I would get accepted to, and have gotten in to or waitlisted at schools I never dreamed I would have a chance of being accepted to. This process makes absolutely no sense so never give up! This process truly makes no sense!! I'm glad that you are not dwelling on the UCF situation, because you've gotten into awesome programs so far and have great options at this point. fsustar83

Not a rant, this is a well deserved moment to express your frustration with the system especially when you hear words like "complications" involved in the process, and trust me I understand...sitting waiting to hear, I've hit the point where I really just want to know regardless of result so I can move forward with my upcoming year. I really hope you hear soon especially with all the work stuff pending!

I wish you luck as well....maybe well be classmates next semester (there's still hope!) Did you speak to admissions or the SLP department directly?? When I called Adelphi about 2 weeks ago, I was given more information from a person in the department then admissions. She actually told me my application was circulating and it depends on who has it, some take longer to make decisions then others and it could be 4 more weeks. The admissions dept. said your application is still under review.
Tuck
In the email I received from them there was just an attached PDF saying that I had been recommended for admission by the department. Presumably it was also mailed to me, but hasn't arrived yet. My applyourself status hasn't changed, though. There was no word on funding yet, and I was told that they had a large number of applicants this year and are a bit behind (as seems to be the case for many schools this year). I'm crossing my fingers for you guys! It doesn't seem like many people have heard from them, so maybe they're accepting in waves. Also, for anyone else on the waitlist at the University of Arizona, I called and found out that there has been NO movement yet on the waitlist for the 3 year program (which is apparently really uncommon for this time in the year). Seems like many schools are really pushing the April 15th deadline this year. I'm thinking happy thoughts for all of you that haven't heard good news yet! There's still time! Thank you for the info and congrats! I am going to sit tight, but it will be hard to resist the urge to call them if I still haven't heard anything by the beginning of next week. If I were to get accepted to Utah, I don't think I could commit without making a visit there, but it's going to be difficult to do that with the time between admissions decisions and April 15 dwindling. But it's probably just as well, as I would need some funding for the offer to be compelling, and I'm not holding my breath for that. emelki, I noticed you were also accepted to Vanderbilt. Are leaning toward any particular option right now? Also, what made you choose to apply to Utah?

Are leaning toward any particular option right now? Also, what made you choose to apply to Utah? Thank you! I would say there's no reason why you can't call, Amy Collard has been very helpful to me, so maybe you could just send her an email asking what's up? I'm with you on the campus visit. I'm not sure I can commit to going to Utah unless I visit the campus, but time is running short, so I'm not sure it's an option. I had the opportunity to visit Vanderbilt earlier this year, and I was really impressed with everything. The professors were very supportive of their students, the clinics are amazing, and the current students are happy. Vanderbilt has been my first choice because of their voice specialty track, current voice research, and their one-of-a-kind voice clinic. However, I am an alternate for funding there, and I'm not sure I can justify the cost if Utah offers something more. Utah I also chose because of their research in voice, they have one professor in particular I am interested in. I'm getting nervous about making a decision now, because I really think it's going to come down to cost. Neither school promises to know anything about funding before the 15th, and I was counting on finances to help me make a decision! The tuition at each school is about equal, so if I get anything from Vanderbilt I think my choice will be easy, but if I am offered anything from Utah, I may end up in Salt Lake City. Merp. Is anyone else in that same boat here? Funding is so important for me, but I may have to make a decision without that information. Do you think schools may extend their decision deadlines if they can't provide funding information until after that?

Do you think schools may extend their decision deadlines if they can't provide funding information until after that? That is pretty much my boat too. I am interested in neurogenics, and Northwestern is my first choice from that perspective because they have a tremendous amount of brain-related work going on. However, I just can't justify the cost. Vanderbilt really impressed me when I visited there, but there are also faculty doing work relevant to my interests at Utah and Colorado. Like you, I'm holding out hope for funding from somewhere. katieliz456
Do you all have any thank-you gift ideas for out-of-state recommenders? One of my profs is now at a different university, and I feel like she went above and beyond, and wrote me an extremely detailed and thoughtful letter. I don't want to send anything fragile or heavy (expensive to ship), and I'm skeptical about sending food because it might melt/get stale/etc. Any suggestions?? Professors tend to carry a lot of stuff (well mine did anyway)... so I purchased Envirosax reusable bags that can be rolled up and tossed in a purse when not in use and when needed just unrolled and voila! They cost about $9.00 each. Here is the website: http://www.envirosax.com/graphic-series.html

I used to work at a really nice gift shop and we sold hundreds of those reusable bags! They really are a great gift and very useful, you cannot go wrong with coffee either! I gave her the bag, travel cup for water or coffee and a game to use with kids in clinic- it was adorable if I do say so myself lol....Glad I could help Edited April 4, 2013 by hopefulslp88
