fsustar83 Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 fsustar, are you excited to hear from fsu on Monday? Haha, that's a loaded question! I lived in Tallahassee for 8 years, and never in my wildest dreams thought I would go back, but I would be shocked if I got in at this point, and extremely grateful! I was rejected from the distance program last year, but now I'm a few weeks shy of a bachelors in CSD so hopefully that will mean something. I'm just glad to know I'll be hearing something (anything!) at this point I know this has been a rough week for you jmarti, but hang in there, we're all in this together!!
fsustar83 Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 I was also a Pre-Med major! That did take quite a hit on my cumulative GPA. I'm so glad I found SLP while volunteering at a rehab. facility. I was supposed to be observing a fetal/maternal med. doctor, but the volunteer coordinator put me in rehab instead and I fell in "love" with SLP....must be my destiny lol. But, being pre-med helped with a lot of the ASHA pre-reqs (non CSD ones) like biology, chem, physics, stats, calc. & so I don't necessarily regret it. I went to x-ray school after I got my first bachelors in Psychology, and the info I learned in x-ray school has been much more helpful to me in my CSD classes than psych surprisingly! I know more about swallowing studies than most SLPs will ever need to know haha.
queenleblanc Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 FYI to any UCF applicants-- I'm just sitting on the couch mindlessly checking my applications and my UCF portal randomly changed to "admitted". I was waiting for an email but I'm glad I checked! Congratulations!!!!!! SLP1990 1
SLP1990 Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 Congratulations!!!!!! Thank you! Congratulations to you as well
queenleblanc Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 (edited) If I was nervous before hearing anything, now I am REALLY nervous and anxious to hear from at least two other schools on the list before I decide what to do!! I have been counting down the days to the estimated notification dates they gave... If anyone hears from the University of South Carolina, or Western Carolina University, I hope you will post it on here! Only a few more days until all of us start hearing from more schools! eavo Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 I JUST GOT INTO ECU!!!!!!!! I actually have a seat in both campus and DE programs right now, so as soon as I decide which program I want, I will let them know. I still want to wait to hear what USC says, but HOLY FREAKING COW!!!!!!!!!! I AM GOING TO GRAD SCHOOL!!!!!!! Congratulations! I just got in, too. Super psyched!

jaclsmit Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 Quick question - does anyone know how someone can get a GPA higher than 4.0? I've seen it twice now on the results page. Is it a GPA from a college in another country? You can get above a 4.0 because we have the +/- system. So a 90-92% is an A- which is a 3.66, and you need a 93% to get an A (4.0). A few teachers allow an A+ if you get 99-100% in the class. While rare, an A+ gets a numeric grade of 4.33. So you could graduate with 92% in all of your classes and have a cumulative GPA of 3.66, or get lucky and get all As and a couple A+s and get a 4.08.

If you're getting a 99-100% in a class, I think you deserve that extra .33. SLP1990 1

I think it would be cool if all schools had the same grading system. My university doesn't have A+s, only As. arrowgirlie and katieliz456 2
SLPjmar Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 I think it would be cool if all schools had the same grading system. My university doesn't have A+s, only As. Mine too. My school has a C, C+, B-, B, B+, A- and A+. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
slpf13 Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 My school worked on a grading system that only went up to A, (E, D-, D, D+, C-, C, C+, B-, etc). That's why I was kind of upset when CSDCAS calculated my GPA to be lower than it actually said on my official transcripts, because CSDCAS goes up to A+, so my grades ended up being like a little less than they actually are..for example..3.68 would be 3.64 on CSDCAS, or something like that. I do agree that grades should be standardized!
Nebraska19 Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 I just want to quickly apologize if I seemed a little ranty yesterday. It was a pretty stressful day since I heard all my friends getting acceptances from their grad programs (all in different fields from slp) and talking about how they planned to visit their schools and find a place to live during spring break, and I continue to have nothing. It doesn't help that people I talk to who don't know much about this process act like I have been out right rejected from everywhere since I have not heard anything from so many schools this late in the game (actually it's not really that late considering the national deadline is April 15th). But that's really not an excuse to go on full rant mode. But it's a new day and I chose to have a new attitude and enjoy my spring break to the fullest and look forward to the 15th, when I may actually hear something. It's time to get out and enjoy this 40 degree weather we are expected to have all week! lol SLPtoBEweee 1

At these schools someone getting a 90% in every class would have a 4.0, and at my school it would be a 3.66, which is a huge difference. I was a little upset CSDCAS made my GPA slightly lower too because it didn't count A+s like my school does, but I think it alters our GPAs to make everything as standardized and comparable as possible.

We are all under a lot of pressure, and this forum is a place to vent and let it all out. Please don't ever apologize for expressing yourself- if you don't during this process, you'll go kuckoo! Enjoy your break, you definitely deserve it. I will be thinking of you and hoping you get the good news you need. Nebraska19 1

Ms.slp Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 Ok so has anyone heard back from LIU Long Island University Brooklyn I saw on the results page a lot of people received some sort of notification from cw post (interviews). Also I see the nyc private schools are taking their time (beside nyu).

Letter grades should just be eliminated, in my opinion. An A- is up for far more interpretation than a 3.66, and grades aren't something in which there should be discrepancies between schools.

But I saw on the results page that last year the first acceptance was on February 15th, so I'm a little surprised no one's heard anything yet.
SLPjmar Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 I feel like some of my schools are notifying far later this year. katieliz456 1
tlsstc Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 Has anyone received a decision from Columbia Teacher's College yet? Nope. I asked a friend who works at the law school if she could find anything out - she said she would try
tlsstc Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 has anyone heard from Vanderbilt? No. I was very sad to see that I had NO mail today. I was looking online at apts in Nashville this morning (dare to dream!) - WOW it can be expensive!

I was told that they have a interview first
