ecologist1234 Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 unreal that they do it uni by uni.... if that's really the case. mind-boggling system...isn't mass-mailing what email is supposed to have made simple?
padthai234 Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 @colorfulcat that is a very interesting suggestion... i am actually curious now because if we are ALL from the same damn school that would suggest something funky is up. but if we're all from different schools maybe we're just all at programs who got the sort end of the stick in terms of response time? blah.
haysdays Posted September 23, 2013 Posted September 23, 2013 If anyone hears any news today, Monday the 23rd, please post.
padthai234 Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 anyone else thinking maybe FH forgot about their school entirely?
swifttortoise Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 Yep, I'm pretty sure they did. And I plan to reject the award even if i get it just to spite them. HA!!!!! Take that US/ED. We are not a bunch of groveling graduate students who will just do whatever it takes to get your stupid money (right???)
colorfulcat Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 (edited) Okay, I'm going to post this to give us all a tiny sliver of hope. From the Fulbright-Hays Q&A. 22. When will students be notified whether or not they have been selected? The review process for DDRA Program applications is lengthy and multi-faceted, so announcement times may vary. Regret letters are sent to the institutional applicant usually in February or March. Candidate status is announced usually in April and as late as September. It is the responsibility of the institution to inform students of their status. The Department does not inform students directly. Awards are issued between April and September. And that's on the normal timeline. My institution has historically done really well on Fulbright-Hays and I think it's unlikely that not a single person at my University got it this year, so I'll hold onto that. haysdays Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 (edited) Although the timeline is different this year the quote that colorful cat cited makes it sound like notices are not sent all at once and sent randomly whenever the individual application process is finished. colorfulcat Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 It's by institution. The grant is given as a chunk to your institution, so if one applicant is still up in the air at your school, than no one at that school will receive info I believe. http://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/32-million-grants-awarded-fulbright-hays-doctoral-dissertation-research-abroad
swifttortoise Posted September 24, 2013 Posted September 24, 2013 That makes some sense. Blame the reviewers??
padthai234 Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 hey everyone - i just called the FH office, and unfortunately ALL award notifications went out the 17th. so if you're school hasn't heard anything it's because it's not getting any awards (according to Stephanie in the office)
ecologist1234 Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 well, there we have it. thanks for the info
swifttortoise Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 Wow, that is unreal, though it makes sense at this point. Amazing that they don't send an e-mail letting the U know that they aren't receiving anything. One e-mail would have saved a whole bunch of wasted anxiousness.
colorfulcat Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 Le sigh. I suppose there's always next year.
hmmm Posted October 1, 2013 Posted October 1, 2013 If anyone is still reading this, has anyone heard of any alternates getting upgraded??? I am/was an alternate but I never heard anything from DOE since I was first notified about that (and I tried e-mailing and calling)...
rwcole39 Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Unfortunately, the government shutdown probably means that all the DoE people who work on Fulbright and Fulbright-Hays are currently furloughed. I wouldn't expect to hear anything else until this mess is resolved.
varodai Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Has any of the alternates heard back? They posted awards on the site. It would just be helpful to know the answer in some more humane way. http://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/education-department-awards-41-million-grants-16-fulbright-hays-group-projects-a
hmmm Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Yeah, after multiple attempts to clarify what was going on with the DOE (I was an alternate), they finally got back to me saying all the awards have been allocated. I really hope they send our reviews/scores back asap, at least.
varodai Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 I gave up all hope, contacted my rep asking for confirmation that I did not get it, only to get a response that he knew I got an award before government-shutdown but waited to let me know because my budget was significantly reduced. I suspect he is still waiting for a clarification from DOE.
hmmm Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 Varodai, wow really? I wonder why they reduced the budget? What area was it for? This entire month has been pretty frustrating. Government shutdown or not, the DOE needs to be more professional about letting candidates know promptly whether they got the award or not.
