sankofa Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Glam, Where else did you apply? I already posted it here but ill pm you !
kpwinn Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Hi Glamdoll, It was me who posted the Emory interview today. I'm not sure if they are interviewing everyone or anything, but hopefully we will hear soon. Good luck!
Fresno Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Hey folks! Who posted the UT-Austin notice? "My potential advisor sent me an email and said the admission notice will be sent out on Jan. 10"..... Looks like a fake
Brisingamen Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Yeah, that UT Austin one was a little strange.
New England Nat Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Eh, it could mean anything without being fake. Remember that's an international student and that strangeness you perceive may be just an issue of language.
Brisingamen Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) Actually, I've just realised the person who posted that might have mistyped the date... If that's so, it makes sense. (It says the applicant heard from POI that admission notices would be sent January 10... but since the post was made January 19, it was a little puzzling. Probably meant some other date...) thedig13 Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Does anybody know who posted the UC Riverside acceptance and the UPenn interview? I applied to both programs and am officially nervous that neither program will be admitting me.
Zephyr99 Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Maybe this is just me but I'd prefer if this thread didn't turn into a hunt for people who posted results.
New England Nat Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Zephyr, you are probably right, but it should ease as it gets into Feb and there are a lot more results being posted. People are still nervous.
Zephyr99 Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I understand but setting up separate threads like "UT-Austin results" are more appropriate and will most likely yield better conversations than hunting people down here. This isn't a big deal; just an observation of mine.

levoyous Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 The UPenn interview was me. The DGS said they are doing two days of interviews via Skype next week. Didn't say who it would be with.
catsandscarves Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) New to the forum. Been an avid reader and trying to avoid the public worrying, but I thought it was about time to join! I applied to a whopping 17 programs (applying the first time around really humbled me). My research interests lie in the American West in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, particularly in borderlands. What are your thoughts on UPenn doing interviews? Think they are interviewing everyone they are interested in since it is being run through the DGS? Edited January 21, 2014 by catsandscarves
New England Nat Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 They did interviews last year. I'm pretty sure you can assume if you haven't been contacted for an interview you can write them off.
New England Nat Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 While you are at it making new threads... When the time comes for some of you to talk about the decisions you have to make in the coming months... you should do that in another thread so as not to drag that out in front of people still waiting for an acceptance.
catsandscarves Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 That is what I thought as well. Definitely the school I was least connected with though so not a surprise. I was able to meet and be in touch with potential advisors from all other schools so now the real waiting begins. Also, FYI Madison professors are in the late stages of reviewing applications... almost time for the bureaucracy to take over. My POI has been in touch and expressed great interest! what is everyone doing to keep themselves busy during the wait?
ReallyNiceGuy Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Knowing that my fate, at some point, is out of the hands of professors and in the hands of bureaucrats is legitimately horrifying. So it goes... I guess?

catsandscarves Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Knowing that my fate, at some point, is out of the hands of professors and in the hands of bureaucrats is legitimately horrifying. So it goes... I guess? That is the part that terrifies me the most! The professor (a full-professor at Madison) sent me a note saying that she was quite impressed and hopes that she will be in touch, but that she has limited control over the process at this point. Just gotta trust that if you can pass the professor test you can hopefully make it through the bureau[crazy]!
New England Nat Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I wouldn't say it's in the hands of bureaucrats as a decision making stage. To some degree it's at the mercy of numbers. How many students in what fields does a particular department want to or have the resources to take. A professor might want you, but if there are seven Americanists in a department and they only have room for six, someone's not going to get what they want.

catsandscarves Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Thanks New England Nat. It still is unfortunate that it comes down to that rather than a professor wanting to work with you though!
New England Nat Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 In the long run it's better for you. Imagine what the job market would be like if every professor who wanted to train students would get as many as they wanted. catsandscarves 1
