No my financial aid page had NOT changed. I was also very depressed about that because I thought it was a sure sign that I hadn't been accepted. I really don't think that means anything. Even when I checked today, it said "access to financial...admitted students only"

Sorry to bombard you with questions, obviously a bunch of us applied there. Was it a personalized email from faculty or an email from the DGS? I've got the hunger. haha

Man you guys I'm getting depressed right now. I've refused to check the grad cafe (well, i've been sick!), but UT-Austin is one of my top choices. Actually, I really have no idea what I'm going to do if I don't get in to any schools.... CONGRATS TO EVERYONE WHO GOT IN THOUGH!

SAY IT WITH ME THIS TIME: "It's not over until its over."

:D You got this. Try not to let it get to you until you've got a rejection or acceptance in hand.

This is good advice.  I think all three of us will hear good news soon.

Given that it had funding information, I think they are personalized.

We had someone from Austin at the AKD ceremony last spring. He lectured on how the human genome project was severly limited so they are looking for sociology to step in to help explain how social conditions combine with biology to produce different outcomes. Told us that this is the next step in showing how sociology is a "hard" science. Was a really interesting lecture, but a little out of my area. Interesting things going on there though.

Good luck to you all, and congrats to those that got it!

Maleficent999, thanks! It's making my break after graduation a nightmare. I haven't been able to relax in a month since graduating knowing my future is on the line right now.

Hoping for the best and I need to find a way to keep my mind from thinking about it

I'm going to sound like a crazy hippie right now, but just think positively. Maybe ban yourself from the results and forums until you hear something. I did that (for a second lol) and it really helped. Sometimes ignorance IS bliss, especially when there's nothing you can do right now.

I'll claim an acceptance to UVa.

Also applied to UNC-- getting a little depressed at this point.

If you don't mind me asking regarding UVa, were you interviewed before your acceptance?  What are your stats/areas of interest?

Sure: ~3.8 GPA, one publication, research abroad, a few internships. My GRE verbal was very high, quant- above average but not stellar

I claim another UVa acceptance. I have been lurking for awhile now. I thought it was time to add to the conversation. I'm a little bit bummed about UT :/

I have to admit, I am a little worried about my U-Michigan application. One of my letter writers is top in her area, but was a month late with the LoR (and around a week late for the others). Said it was computer problems, uses windows 95, and while I was sitting there they tried to open firefox over 20 times. When the windows finally opened the system froze up. I sent lots of reminders and also reminded them in person. I really hope this doesnt impact my chances.....

They were also around a week late on all the others.

Sigh

At least it wasnt dial up....

Social inequalities related to gender, race, and class mainly focusing on how these inequalities are associated with issues of crime, deviance, and social control.

I have 3 conferences under my belt, and one planned for this spring. Had research funding through an undergraduate program focusing on televised presidential campaign ads from 1952-2012 (new data set out of the political science department here). We focused how the presentation of crime issues has changed over time. Also working with a professor this summer on archival research relating to the history of sociological theory (heading to the Chicago archives in a couple weeks). Just got invited to join a project in the survey research and methodology department. Also was a undergrad TA for a bit helping to develop an emporium model for the intro to social research 2 course. Tutor for intro to social research methods 1 and 2 for a bit. 3.9 gpa in the major. GRE scores were not so good (around 50th percentile). It has been tough to narrow down my specific area of interest, but most of that should happen in my first year or 2.

NewGrad....gotta love the Nebraska connection! Congrats!

Thanks, and good luck to you! I was thinking about applying to Chicago, but the field has changed so much there. I have a specific interest in social settlements. I'm excited to get some archive experience. Just hoping that they up the travel funds. Would be great experience but I can't go if they are unable to provide proper funding.

Also met a grad student at the MSS conference last spring. They said they were on the 9th year of the PHD program at Chicago. I really hope it doesnt take that long...

On a side note, if anyone has questions about UNL, send me a message! I would be glad to answer any questions about the program or the area.

Can't speak to the Chicago program because I'm a Northwestern alum. :-)

Care to share your experience at Northwestern? I am not familiar with the program.

Thanks, NewGrad.  Now that I received an admissions decision from UT-Austin, I can tell you guys that contacting faculty at prospective programs is a very smart move.  I will share that one very big name at UT-Austin agreed to meet with me during a conference last fall. She offered wonderful advice on the admissions process and even urged me to apply to additional programs she felt might be an ideal fit for my interests.  I also took a phone meeting with another very big name at UT-Austin (who echoed my POI's advice), reached out to one of his students who just joined the faculty at my current institution, and received insider advice from the graduate coordinator.   I worked very hard to take control of the admissions process and it paid off in spades.

I think that many of the students on this forum have solid application packets and should not require this additional step.  So, don't kick yourself if you didn't do this.  Since my GRE scores were very low (imagine your worst nightmare) and my academic trajectory was a bit wacky (sociology to justice policy to social work to demography), these meetings gave me the opportunity to quell any concerns the admissions committee might have.  It also helped that I have one publication, stellar LORs, and presented my research at ASA, PAA and ISA.

I wasn't a Soc major in undergrad, but I have had a tremendous experience with the Sociology faculty since making the decision to apply for graduate programs in their field. I'm talking...one of the top faculty members had dinner with me at the ASA meeting last summer and then reviewed my personal statement in the fall, another reviewed my writing sample, and two more provided advice throughout the process.

A lot of the faculty here have connections at UChicago and wanted to develop a really collaborative department at Northwestern. The weekly colloquia is fantastic and our grad students have access to additional conference funds, publishing opportunities, etc. I have had tremendous mentoring in and out of the Sociology department and in retrospect, I'm probably an idiot for not applying here. Ha ha.

BUT...I do feel strongly about going somewhere else at this point. I've been in the Northwestern/Chicago community for about 6 years now, so it's time to head south. Or west. Or east. TBD.

Good luck! If anyone has specific questions about Northwestern faculty or department, message me individually and I am happy to provide my honest opinion.
