MFA 2014 All Art ADMISSIONS freak-out forum!!!!!!!!

The weirdest and most disturbing stuff has been happening regarding my Pratt application!

An assistant professor at the Pratt MFA Communications Design programme contacted me (via email on February 13) for a Skype interview, with several scheduling options. I replied the same day, choosing to schedule the interview on February 24, 2pm - 3.30pm EST. However, I didn't get a confirmation, and so sent an email on February 18, and another one on February 24.

I haven't heard back from Pratt, and I'm very concerned about the interview. Sent them another email today.

I don't know what to make of this - the interview didn't happen yesterday. Will my interview be rescheduled?

More importantly, why haven't I heard back from Pratt?

Does anyone have any idea about this / similar experiences?

Call them! It seems like some kinda glitch on their part.

Don't worry about being rude. You earned your acceptance. Take as much time as you want.

I second this anon user. ASAP only means as soon as possible--when you have assembled all the info you need to make a well informed decision.

Hi, has anyone heard anything from UCLA?  I'm so tired of seeing "decision pending" on my application status...

Beyond the possibility of an impromptu phone call (which I believe would have happened by now) I expect to hear from UCLA, one way or another, the week of March 10th -14th...if last year is any indication.

Does anyone know if VCU or UCLA conduct interviews? (sculpture specifically)

As above, UCLA sometimes does impromptu calls, not exactly interviews.

Hey! Congratulations on all the acceptances coming through!

My status for MFA for Columbia changed from yesterday to today... to just 2014 Painting :(

On the brighter side I was contacted today for an interview at Cornell!

Did any one applied to UCSD MFA for graphic design? And has anyone have any contact with them, or heard anything from them?

Hi JoJo. I'm sorry to say that interview requests for UCSD were sent out a couple of weeks ago. They weren't medium specific (despite having to choose an emphasis on the application) because it is a fully interdisciplinary program.

The good news is the cost of living in Michigan is probably much lower than you are use to in NY however, you'll need a car because the bus doesn't stop at Cranbrook. The city literally doesn't have bus stops, the bus drives right past Cranbrook because the city doesn't want poor people getting off in their town. I'm not making this up.

Yeah, most people who live Off-Campus live up in Pontiac. There's one apartment building that's like 75% Cranbrok students.

Semi-related: there was a recent New Yorker article called "Drop Dead, Detroit!" about L. Brooks Patterson, the cheif executive of Oakland County (where Bloomfield Hills is, one of the wealthiest counties in the country and just north of Detroit). Worth checking out if you can find it.

But yeah, you have to drive to get ANYWHERE in the area. Even riding a bike is pretty much out of the question, since the roads are really busy (lots of 4-lane split highways), and there aren't many sidewalks.

This really makes me feel better thanks! I've sort of always ruled out cranbrook because of its reputation for being financially impossible but I'm gonna hold on to some hope

Yeah, I think the cost is roughly in the ballpark of what private art schools tend to cost, at least in my experience. So of course, if money is an issue, you're better advised going with a school that can do half- or full-ride scholarships or offer TA-ships to cut down on costs. I feel like Cranbrook does what they can to help make it affordable, but they don't have the biggest pool to draw from with 150 graduate students and no undergrad.

It might just be shadows of the recession (they're doing all sorts of repairs all the time this year), but sometimes you notice sort of janky things that you think really should get taken care of (we're readying our print shop for the impending spring basement flood, for instance). It's just bizarre, because you're surrounded by this super-posh private boarding high school that is rolling in the dough.

Just to let everyone know I spoke to the woman at UCLA to change my address and she said they don't send out letters, only emails. They are in the final stages of decision and have not informed anyone yet. She said it most likely will not be before the end of next week. Usually in the 1st and 2nd week of March. So absolutely no reasons for anyone to panic that they haven't heard anything yet! Good Luck people!

And I am also completely obsessed with this forum, it has been helpful but I can also see that it could be a little traumatic for people that are not hearing back. Hope you're all holding in there and keeping positive!

I have had a good 4 years since I last studied and believe me, there are plenty of advantages to getting some solid professional experience out in the real world, remember there is no experience like the real one and its really really important to see what its really going to be like out there. My advice would be, if you don't get in where you had hoped, don't fret! It obviously is not your time yet and lets face it grad school is not the finish line. My advise would be to get as much experience as possible, have exhibitions, do residencies, start a small gallery with your friends or have underground shows (whatever your thing is), try to network, meet people and travel! I know it seems like all of this is probably to expensive and difficult but believe me it is possible and once you start you'll get on a roll and won't be able to stop.

Do HEAPS of research and apply for things, shows, residencies, awards etc - but make sure they are right for you and not financial rip offs.

ALSO most importantly of course just keep making art and making it bigger and better than before.

Personally, being originally from Australia where we don't do internships for free, I think they're a little bit of a waste of time - but this was only in my case because I couldn't handle the idea of working for free but I'm sure there are great internships out there too.

From my own personal experience the Vermont Studio Center is completely amazing! Its like art school condensed into a month. They can help you out financially too so it won't seem so daunting, and rememebr they give you a bedroom, amazing studio, and 3 incredible meals a day! Well worth it I say. They also have fellowships too if you're lucky.

There are actually a lot of free residencies in the US, I know the Millay Colony, MacDowell Colony, Skowhegan, Woodstock, Fire Island, Art OMI, Headlands, and many more.

And there are HEAPS of residencies in Europe and Asia that are free, if not pay for airfares too (though these are generally competitive).  - Check out the first 2 links for info on this.

Specifically South Korea puts a lot of money into 'young artists' and there are a lot of opporuntites there. I did a residency with the Nanji Art Studio and everything was free, I believe they now help you with the airfare too. Just google residencies in Korea and I'm sure a few will come up.

Also I know a lot of people who seem to be ending up in Iceland doing residencies at the moment!? there are some good free residencies in Norway too.

Also if you are from the US you may want to think about studying in Europe? (and I'm not just talking about London!). Although these are mainly being fazed out, there are a lot of free(ish) 1-2 year postgrad programs that sound amazing. Try De-ateliers in the Netherlands. Good places to look for free/cheap education (and REALLY good quality) are: Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Belgium, Austria, the Netherlands, Spain, France, and Greece...

I have done a lot of research on this kind of stuff so if anyone wants any specific details on residencies, alternative programs or application processes then I would be happy to help you out! I have done 2 residencies in Europe, 1 in Asia and 4 in the USA.

Remember if it doesn't happen this year, then that means you just have a whole year open to other exciting things.

Good Luck!
