Quoted from last year since this was helpful for many students.

"We all know how stressful and tough it is for applying to grad school. So let's support each other throughout the applying process!! Any structural applicant out there?? Where you planning to apply/have applied? What are your stats in terms of
GPA, GRE scores, research experience, papers, contacts with professors?"

You might also add anything that surprised you so far?

Like personally I am surprised how much I check Thegradecafe and the status of my applications even though I know that nothing will come out before February!

So share your stats and experience guys!

How many places have you applied to? Heard anything yet?

Adding search tags: CEE, PhD, MS, Civil Engineering, SEMM, Structural Engineering, Structures, Geotechnical, Mechanics, Construction, Masters, Berkeley, Cornell, Stanford, MIT, UIUC, Purdue, San Diego, Austin, Texas A&M, Princeton, Boulder, Davis, Michigan, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech.

Hopefully this will help a few more applicants find the thread!  :)

I have applied for 14 universities. No response yet. My stats are as follows:

-GRE 334 (Q:170, V:164, AWA:3.5)

-Undergrad in Civil (GPA:3.07)

-Master in Project and Construction Management (GPA:4, Top Student)

-Master in Structural Engineering (GPA:4, Top Student)

-2 Submitted papers for journals

-Currently a Research Assistant

I really hope that my low GPA in undergrad does not damage my application package. What surprised me the most? Certainly the amount of time I am putting on status checking. I mean, Come on ....! It is too early yet! I have a research job that I really like! But it is to hard to focus on it in this situation.

That's a really impressive profile Mostafa64!

I don't think your undergrad GPA would matter too much, considering you already have 2 Masters degrees.

I know what you mean about the status checking. It's like a disease.

What specialization are you looking at in structural engineering?

I suppose I should share my stats as well

-GRE 326 (170, 156, 4.0)

-Udergrad GPA - 3.82/4.00 (international)

-Couple of summer research internships and projects at my undergrad institution

I've applied to twelve places.

Thanks a lot GradschoolUSA. I really hope that the adcoms are as kind as you toward my application! B)  . My specialization is Structural Health Monitoring and System Identification as well as computational mechanics. If it is possible I feel even more worried from 2 days ago (the first announcements of UC Berkeley).

Exactly, those Berkeley announcements have had me constantly fretting. Any idea if they were structural engineering announcements?

I've applied mostly to earthquake engineering MS programs, so I guess we're not competing. :)

I don't know if they are structural engineering, but hopefully they are not!  ;)  Do you have any idea how many master and phd students they will take?

I guess you're in the wrong topic! ((Structural Engineering)) :-)

Great work GradcafeUsa. I've been thinking about doing the same thing, but it was quite a difficult task! :D The only shortcoming is that we don't actually know which area of specialization they are in. However, based on this observation, it seems that at least we have two more weeks before the weeks with considerable acceptances start! Come on..., We can do it!

Hi every body;

My credentials are as follows:

- Undergrad: Civil, GPA 3.96, ranked 2nd, SUT

- Master's: Earthquake Engineering, GPA 4.00, ranked 1st, SUT

- GRE: verbal 155, quant 169, writing 3.5

- Paper: one under submission

The universities I've applied to:

UIUC, Berkeley, Austin, VirginiaTech, Davis, Boulder, Washington, Buffalo, Columbia, USC, Colorado State, Oregon State, Northeastern, and Tufts

Unfortunately, I haven't received any message from any of the above universities, yet, but I'm sure it is too soon to expect any answer and answers may start to be received by us after 15-February. So, be patient ;-)

Hi Forum,

My major is structural engineering. I applied to 7 universities and I was offered RA by university of Minnesota twenty days after submitting the application. I talked to the admission administrator of Northwestern university and he said that I need to communicate with the POI's I have listed in my application to see if they are willing to  offer me a project to work on. What I can suggest to you guys is that talk to the POI's you have mentioned in your applications. If you are in the US, go and see them. Otherwise, send them email. Study in-depth about their ongoing projects before any communication and focus on two or three universities you feel that you have more chance to be admitted in. Good luck.

( B.S in Civil Engineering 1998. M.S in Structural engineering 2001. M.S. in Structural Engineering 2014. M.S in Applied Mathematics 2014. Ten years teaching experience)

Universities I have applied: UIUC, UC Berkeley, Georgia Tech, Austin, Northwestern, UCSD, UMN

Hi,

Anyone know whether grad school updates online status? I keep checking my online status, but it never changes since i submitted it....

Posted (edited)

Geez, after visiting this forum I'm even more worried about getting accepted. My stats are way below you guys.

GRE: 317 Q:158 V:159 AW:4.5

Undergrad GPA: 3.0

Master's GPA: 3.7

Submitted Papers: 1 (and it hardly counts... it's a "journal" that recently started)

BS Civil - 2006

MSc Structural Engineering - 2010

Universities applied to: Texas A&M, NCSU, LSU, UIC and WPI

I guess maybe because I went with more modest programs I might not be too bad off, but any how. I guess the only thing I was hoping to have going for me was my teaching experience in the Structural Engineering branch in the Civil Engineering and Master's Program at my home University for the last 6 years, and the work experience the past 8 years.

Nothing yet!

it is weird, since we have seen some acceptance on the results page.

You haven't received any e-mail yet from all the 14 schools you applied to?

Posted

Nope! Not a thing! Although I haven't seen that much of acceptances from the universities I have applied for in the survey. Have you received any results?
