zaryaa Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 hi guys - any idea when will we get our second round results?
alice2.0 Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Got the "any other funding sources/no need to for you to reapply for the May 1st deadline" e-mail today. I gather from reading previous posts here and from my advisor's reaction that this is good news. Did anyone else get notified?
anthrobirthnerd Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 (edited) I received my decline email. Not unexpected. Some of the reviews are merited and helpful for resubmission, but I have a comp April 27 so I'll probably not resubmit until November. Still waiting on NSF. Congrats to everyone who got funded! I'm sorry to hear that, anthrobirthnerd. Good luck with the NSF! I amended my budget and sent it back, got a short message this morning saying that they'll be making decisions over the next few weeks and that they'll let me know if they need more info. From what I've seen in this forum, that's a pretty standard response. I'm hoping this means I'll get something in the mail within a week or so! I can't help but feel really anxious about it until then. Congrats to recipients, and good luck to all those still waiting to hear back.

Hi alice, how significantly did you amend your budget? did they ask for it? I am trying to figure out if revising the budget can affect their decision!
alice2.0 Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Hi Zarayaa! My change was small. They asked me to explain why I needed more funding than they usually provide for a particular item, and if I didn't need have a special need to justify it, to reduce the request. I didn't have a special need, so I reduced it. I don't think the amount you ask for plays a part in whether or not they'll fund your project, unless your requests are outlandish. If they decide to fund your project, they will work with you on your budget to make sure you have what you need, but also that you're not asking for things they don't typically cover. Here's a really helpful blog post they wrote a few years ago about their perspective on budgets: http://blog.wennergren.org/2012/03/grant-season-journal-part-5-preparing-your-budget/. As another example, there was a person on this forum last year who was asked to justify including transcription and NVivo software in his budget, which was probably a pretty significant chunk of his request. He wrote back and explained why he needed it, but they still asked that he remove both from his budget in the end, so he did, and he was funded. From what I've heard from people who have won the grant and from what I've read in these forums and over at Academic Wiki, I'd say that definitely pay careful attention to putting your budget together, but don't stress about whether the amount will impact their decision to fund you or not. If they decide to fund you based on the project itself, they work with you on the budget.

I hope it is all going to be fine. I just don't like the uncertainty of their emails - I've got a "no need to reapply" email, but in the following communication they keep mentioning that my application is still under review... Ohh

So sorry to hear about the decline - I have go so so many rejection emails! Just don't take it personally and stay motivated! How good are the reviewers' comments? If you think they sound good - maybe, you should try to resubmit the application by May! Although it is touch and you would be exhausted after the comps - but there are still three days and a prospect of getting the grant next Fall! The more you try, the bigger your chances!

Ohh Hi Zaryaa...I hear you about the wording of their messages. It's been a tense week! Did you get the "need not reply" e-mail on Monday? I read that they send them out over 2-3 days, and then it takes about 1--1.5 weeks to get the snail mail notification.

I won't be able to relax until the mail notification... Good luck to you and everybody!
alice2.0 Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 Yes, I got it on Monday... Ahh.. I won't be able to relax until the mail notification... Good luck to you and everybody! I haven't been able to relax, either. I will definitely post if/when I hear anything. Good luck to you, too, and to everyone still waiting for something conclusive!

Thanks for checking in. I ended up getting NSF! I may reapply to WG in Nov. for additional funding since NSF doesn't cover all of my expenses, but I at least have a good portion covered for now.

alice2.0 Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Hi guys! I haven't received anything from WG in the mail yet (the mail has come today already), and I'm starting to panic. I got the "no need to reapply" e-mail on the 13th and last heard from them on the 14th, when they said they'd be making their decisions over the next few weeks and would let me know this week if they needed any more info. Is anyone else in the same boat? If others have received official notification in the mail at this point, I'll call WG to see about the status of my application. Every minute counts when the resubmission date is so close!

TheRealP Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Hi, grad110 and alice2.0 !! Just want to let you know that I too received the no need to reapply, and that I submitted and then resubmitted a budget this AM (also got NSF). That *could* mean that they're still figuring out who is getting what and that letters have not yet been mailed. It could be longer than you're hoping. grad110 1
alice2.0 Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Hi, grad110 and alice2.0 !! That *could* mean that they're still figuring out who is getting what and that letters have not yet been mailed. It could be longer than you're hoping. Grad110 and TheRealIP, thank you both for posting and giving me some peace of mind! I didn't think about how NSF decisions coming out at about the same time would result in some people needing to revise their WG budgets. WG posted something on their Twitter page last Tuesday about how dissertation applicants should check their mailboxes for news about their applications, so I figured if I hadn't heard anything yet, it wasn't looking good...but evidently no one has received an official acceptance yet. Yes, it's very possible that letters won't go out until the dust settles. And congrats on the NSF, The RealIP! LilyoftheValley and alice2.0 1 1
alice2.0 Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Hi guys! Over at Academic Jobs Wikia, they confirmed what TheRealIP was saying above about how people were revising budgets this week...sounds like on the 20th, they started asking those who had been waiting to hear back about NSF and other funding decisions to resubmit their budgets. The most recent edit at Academic Wikia: "In an email sent out earlier today [4/23], they said: 'Decision letters will be mailed out via regular mail starting this week.'" So some of us may get letters soon! Good luck, everyone.
zaryaa Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Hi everyone, I submitted my revised budget on April 20, and haven't heard back since then. I am hoping that we would get the mails in the following week! Congratualitons to those who got NSF!
alice2.0 Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Hi guys! I just wanted to let you know that I received my approval letter today (4/27), exactly two weeks after the initial "no need to reapply" e-mail. The letter is postmarked (4/22). The reviews are really helpful.

farflung Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 Hi May Wenner-Gren 2015 applicants - Any idea when to expect a first round notification? Last time it went straight to my junk e-mail folder and I nearly missed it.
newleaf Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Hi May Wenner-Gren 2015 applicants - Any idea when to expect a first round notification? Last time it went straight to my junk e-mail folder and I nearly missed it. On Aug 3, 2015, at 9:19 PM Funding Decision <fundingdecision@wennergren.org> wrote to my advisor that I got it. Curiously I dont have any email from WG at all (it also went into my spam last time) I hope you get it!
