Yeah on the other hand I may not be the most competitive person that got into Cornell so I could image that ones with better qualifications or ones that applied to even higher ranked schools might get more money.

Actually my stipend is for a 12-month period and I haven't yet told them about my family. I think after tax reductions it will be about 2600$/month, the amount Nyctophile mentioned.

Except in the humanities I think that's what we get before taxes.

I've been accepted to the MS CS program at Cornell and the stipend mentioned in my admission letter is 24k.

Also, I'll be meeting with one of the CS professors there to chat about the program on Tuesday (2/25). If anyone has questions that they would like to get answered by a CS professor feel free to pass it along to me and I'll try to get some answers for you.

Thanks! MS and PhD students are guaranteed funding but not MEng students. Worked out well for me since I couldn't really bring myself to commit to trying to do a PhD.

The stipend in my admission letter was referred to as "an academic year stipend" which would mean Fall/Spring and not Winter/Summer.

Same here but they didn't mention anything about possible summer stipends. The link provided earlier in this thread said they are in the 5000-8000 dollar range though.

the summer stipend mentioned in my letter was in the $5000 range

My summer stipend amount was also mentioned explicitly in my letter. Since the offer letter is effectively the legal contract you're bound to when you accept a school's offer, I'd clear up questions about whatever doesn't appear on there with your prospective DGS before April 15.

I got an answer that a summer stipend is guranteed but its type will decided at a later point. Could be a TA as well as an internship. So it seems to be unclear what amount I will get. However, I have several companies that I could intern at in the summer (back here in Germany) if nothing works out, so I don't really worry.

Can somebody tell me what amount of the stipend will be "lost" to taxes? Is the tuition that the department pays for me also income I have to pay taxes for? As far as I understand I only have to pay taxes in the US and not in Germany (thank god! they are much higher here), but I don't really know how high they are.

Anyone know a good part of Ithaca to search for off-campus housing? I looked on the housing site and craigslist but I am having a hard time parsing what is a good deal and where are the boonies. I'm an archaeology grad student so all my stuff will be in the Arts Quad but I don't know if that really matters when it comes to housing.

Hey! I have got an admit to PhD, ECE. When do we have to reach Cornell? Instruction begins on 26th and Grad Student welcome is 25th. We dont need to reach before this right, for any kind of formalities?

As far as I know you just have to hand in your degree. But the deadline for this is somewhere in september.

I already got my visa so I suppose everything is going well. Would love to have some written confirmation (the offer letter was only digital) or some kind of a contract though.

I got an admit to the MEng in Comp Sc program at the Ithaca campus. Are the placements for this course as good as any 2 yr MS course like the one, say, at Columbia? Also, will it be really hectic completing 30 credits in 2 semesters?

Could anyone currently at Cornell share what you pay in taxes and/or fees? In other words, how much do you receive each year after taxes and fees are subtracted? I received the 24,000+5,000 summer stipend, which I think is standard.

Does anyone have any idea where we can get to know which books are recommended by Profs in Cornell for any particular course? I found the list of courses but cannot find any book list as such.

Specifically, I am looking for books needed for courses in the M.Eng in Computer Science.

Hi Supriya,

First you have to register for courses and there’s no guarantee to it because there will be rush (first-cum-first serve). Unless we know which courses you are planning to take, it’s difficult to suggest any books. Also, few Professors will suggest no books for their course. It depends.

If I were in your situation, I would relax now, enjoy these days at home, and bother only in July-August after I have registered for the courses, because it’s going to be very hectic in the college  :)  :)  :)

Hi guys,

I'm going to attend Cornell from this Fall, too.

I submitted my "acceptance" at their decision response website.

But there have been no reply mail or something.

I hope I didn't accidentally send "decline"......!!!

nermah1: Maybe write the person that contacted you with the offer? I did that too and they confirmed me the enrollment.

Got my NetID yesterday, so I think everything is progressing nicely.

I believe for MEng in CS we are expected to know basic coding in Java and concepts of database systems, OOPS, algorithms, etc. Any suggestions for someone who has no experience in coding?

Well there are many resources on the Internet to learn programming. I cannot recommend anything in English personally though.

A quick Google search brought me to this tutorial which looks very good: http://www.learnpython.org/

I recommend to start with something easy like Python and then move to Java a few months later.

Hey Germanstudent

When did you submit your acceptance? I did it on the last day of March and still no reply.....hmmm

The prerequisites for M.Eng in CS page (http://www.cs.cornell.edu/masters/apply/prerequisites) web page mentions some concepts of embedded systems as necessary. Since I have a background in Computer Science and not electronics/electrical engineering and worked in software industry, I have no familiarisation with embedded systems. Is this necessary for all M.Eng CS applicants, considering I want to specialise in Security or Software Systems?
