Stevo14850 Posted February 22, 2014 Share Posted February 22, 2014 (edited) I've been accepted to the MS CS program at Cornell and the stipend mentioned in my admission letter is 24k. Also, I'll be meeting with one of the CS professors there to chat about the program on Tuesday (2/25). If anyone has questions that they would like to get answered by a CS professor feel free to pass it along to me and I'll try to get some answers for you. Worked out well for me since I couldn't really bring myself to commit to trying to do a PhD. Since the offer letter is effectively the legal contract you're bound to when you accept a school's offer, I'd clear up questions about whatever doesn't appear on there with your prospective DGS before April 15. Could be a TA as well as an internship. So it seems to be unclear what amount I will get. However, I have several companies that I could intern at in the summer (back here in Germany) if nothing works out, so I don't really worry. Can somebody tell me what amount of the stipend will be "lost" to taxes? Is the tuition that the department pays for me also income I have to pay taxes for? As far as I understand I only have to pay taxes in the US and not in Germany (thank god! they are much higher here), but I don't really know how high they are. I looked on the housing site and craigslist but I am having a hard time parsing what is a good deal and where are the boonies. I already got my visa so I suppose everything is going well. Would love to have some written confirmation (the offer letter was only digital) or some kind of a contract though. Are the placements for this course as good as any 2 yr MS course like the one, say, at Columbia? Also, will it be really hectic completing 30 credits in 2 semesters? Hi Supriya, First you have to register for courses and there’s no guarantee to it because there will be rush (first-cum-first serve). Unless we know which courses you are planning to take, it’s difficult to suggest any books. Also, few Professors will suggest no books for their course. It depends. A quick Google search brought me to this tutorial which looks very good: http://www.learnpython.org/ I recommend to start with something easy like Python and then move to Java a few months later. supriya84 Posted April 5, 2014 Share Posted April 5, 2014 The prerequisites for M.Eng in CS page (http://www.cs.cornell.edu/masters/apply/prerequisites) web page mentions some concepts of embedded systems as necessary. Since I have a background in Computer Science and not electronics/electrical engineering and worked in software industry, I have no familiarisation with embedded systems.
