skgarcia Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Does anyone else feel sick when they think about their already submitted SOP? There are so many things I wish I could go back and change now. I can't even bare to read the damn thing. Anyone else feel this way? Gah.
Human_ Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Me? No. But I'm sure others share your sentiment. glm and Human_ 2
glm Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 I thought reading over my SOP post-application would be a mortifying experience, but I was surprised to find myself impressed with the thing. Maybe it's still too new!
*Jenny* Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 There a few minor things I would tweak, but overall I'm pleased with mine.
Sarah Bee Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 (edited) Have a grammatical error in the very first sentence --I hope that doesn't affect the overall application, which I deem is quite strong. Though I may not qualify for the scholarship as it's very competitive (950 applications and 15 scholarships), I am happy that I gave my best shot (sans the glitch which is unforgivable for a subeditor). seeingeyeduck Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 I definitely had a typo in one of mine and still got in, so there is hope! It was one of those typos that are another word, so maybe the committee missed it too!
deci:belle Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 I had the exact opposite opinion when I went to read my SOP months later. I was like "Woah, where did I pull that out from?!"
awells27 Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 My general feeling about the SOP and writing sample is that I would just assume trash them permanently at this point. It's a total process of exposing yourself but a necessary one I suppose. That's why it's best to have a MA faculty advisor, who evaluates PHD apps every year, who doesn't mind editing your SOP. That way you can endure the embarrassment early on.
