kateosee Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Does the package cover tuition during the summer? I actually haven't the slightest clue how summer funding works. For American Culture, we get 6k of summer funding for no apparent reason. It's like "Hey, thanks for surviving the year. Here's some funding so you don't starve this summer!" I know that there are GSI positions in the summer. That would cover tuition
Chiqui74 Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 (edited) The email from the DGS at the History dept. says they fund students for 6 years, but that's as much as it says. Edited February 25, 2015 by Chiqui74
PD33 Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Looks like I won't have to get that Master's after all. Just got accepted to Maryland's PhD program. Woohoo! MollyTheMick, Ritwik, Fianna and 5 others 8

Gambaosaka1 Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 (edited) Congrats to all those waitlisted at Michigan! Fingers crossed that comes through. I don't funding should be a problem there at all...I am assuming everyone gets a pretty decent package as PhD entrants. Haven't heard jack from them so shall be expecting my rejection from the blind pigeon service. Edited February 25, 2015 by Gambaosaka1

catsandscarves Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Quick notes from being Waitlisted at michigan: you could get a call on April 15 so keep that in mind. Also it's not in only based on a ranked order; for you to get in someone in your field has to reject. This is how wait lists at many schools work, but I know this is how Michigan's work from faculty there. Best of luck to you all!

Bellerophon Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 (edited) Congrats to those who heard! Updated for today, with two more casualties. At this point, it's getting pretty nail-biting for me. Stanford, Emory, Bryn Mawr (Classics), Wisconsin-Madison, UPenn, UNC-Chapel Hill, UVA, Chicago, George Mason, NYU. Edited February 26, 2015 by Bellerophon
kyjin Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Adding to catsandscarves, yes, expect a phone call as late as April 15th. In my cycle I got in from the waitlist and they called me about 9am that day. Good luck everyone!!!
Gambaosaka1 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Well, unless Notre Dame's Kroc Institute contacts me this week, I'm probably SOL. I do interview at Baylor Thursday-Saturday though. We shall see how that goes... Good luck with the interview! Josh J. 1

ashiepoo72 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Thought I should mention--I'm heading to UCSB's recruitment weekend tomorrow, and admits were sent a list of all the people admitted to the program and who will be attending this weekend. Unless you're on the wait list, I think it's safe to assume it's a rejection (not sure if UCSB even has a wait list and, if they do, not sure if wait-listers are notified). Josh J. 1

Just out of curiosity, how many students did they accept?

I applied to their EALC dept. (the POI I emailed preferred me applying there rather than History and introduced me to two other profs who were very nice and helpful). Was told they would give their decisions end of this month. Taking forever.I reckon funding will be an issue there though regardless of whether I get in. Edited February 26, 2015 by Gambaosaka1
ashiepoo72 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 I don't think history admissions affects you guys at EALC. Wouldn't funding be separate? I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, maybe we will be classmates in the future! Gambaosaka1 1
Gambaosaka1 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 How cool would that be? On the EALC website this bit worried me re funding: How many applicants are admitted with funding? This varies each year, but generally between 30-50% of the incoming group receive some kind of funding. Only a few top-ranked candidates can be nominated for central fellowships (which include merit-based fellowships and merit-with-diversity fellowships) from the Graduate Division. Others might receive departmental funding if it is available. Still others come in with their own extramural funding. (see http://www.ed.gov/programs/jacobjavits/index.html) – any Humanities student may apply for this before and during their first year of graduate study only. International Applicants: Unfortunately it is very seldom that international students are awarded funding through our department, as the costs of supporting their non-resident fees and tuition each term are quite high. Please note that international applicants must examine all funding sources carefully to make sure they qualify – many are restricted to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
ashiepoo72 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Yeah, that's anxiety inducing. Considering you got in at UNC, I don't doubt the high likelihood you'd be one of those top candidates that get funding!

ashiepoo72 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Lol I know the feeling. I keep thinking I'm the beneficiary of a series of fortuitous mistakes.
Gambaosaka1 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Lol I know the feeling. I keep thinking I'm the beneficiary of a series of fortuitous mistakes. Haha, you are modest! That many acceptances cannot be a fluke. We need a gradcafe get-together...I reckon you should be in charge of organizing it. MollyTheMick 1
