Cottagecheeseman Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I'm tired of us always having these crazy arguments and whatnot in other threads, and whatever so I thought we needed a lighthearted thread again to just not be serious in. Platonist Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 (edited) OK. I will post a stupid question for you guys because I am from Mars and cannot figure out how to survive on the Earth. The question is: if I were to attend graduate school (so far no graduate school on the Earth has offered me admission, but I hope one will), what would be the easiest and fastest ways to keep myself updated on every piece of information associated with the courses, classes, and the school? (Twitter, Facebook, website, or something else on the cell phone or the laptop?) Thanks for your help; I am so ignorant about the stuff on the Earth, and your advice would enlarge my chances of survival. Edited February 28, 2014 by Platonist
dgswaim Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Scotch is tight. Holy shit. That's the first time I've heard anyone use the term "tight" since like 8th grade. This made me chuckle quite heartily. DHumeDominates, frege-bombs and stressedout 3

This made me chuckle quite heartily. Where are you ? College students here (East coast USA) use it, albeit sometimes ironically, all the time.
Dialectica Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Where are you ? College students here (East coast USA) use it, albeit sometimes ironically, all the time. My impression is that, on the West Coast (I'm a Washingtonian), 'tight' is a relic of the mid-late 90's/early 00's vernacular. Wait For It... 1

Dialectica Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Do the hipsters in Seattle not say "tight"? They do here. In my experience, the hipsters in Seattle say "tight" only when it's meant to be just about as ironic as "groovy".
dgswaim Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Where are you ? College students here (East coast USA) use it, albeit sometimes ironically, all the time. I grew up in Southern California in the late 90's/early 00's, and usage there was somewhat frequent. I'm in Texas now, and apparently it has fallen out of usage in the American Southwest (even among the hipsters here in Austin).
zblaesi Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 (edited) This is random, but do you guys have any secondary ambitions if - for whatever reason - philosophy doesn't pan out? I also studied film production at NYU. I did stuff like this: I like to say that my situation is like being married, having an affair, falling in love with the other woman, and having to decide which to leave. I also recently finished interning for Louie, if any of you guys are Louis CK fans. It was pretty cool. P.S. In retrospect, getting into grad school would be much easier if I wasn't a double major in film production. Edited February 28, 2014 by zblaesi

objectivityofcontradiction Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 (edited) Any one else a Jeopardy fan? And if so, do you want to see this arrogant DB Arthur to lose as bad as I do? Edited March 1, 2014 by objectivityofcontradiction
greencoloredpencil Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Any one else a Jeopardy fan? And if so, do you want to see this arrogant DB Arthur lose as bad as I do? I'm a very casual sort of fan. I'll catch it when I have the chance but that's not too often...

dgswaim Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 (edited) Kurt Gödel's wife told Kurt: "You complete me" He replied: "That explains why the sex is inconsistent" I think Hofstadter told a similar joke in his book "I Am a Strange Loop." It's a good one. Edited March 1, 2014 by dgswaim
PhD applicant Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 I ran into some people from the SCA tonight... "society for creative anachronism" -you know, like a ren fair, but more permanent. Anywho, giving crap to this old hippy guy dressed like a spanish pirate for about ten minutes really let some of my stress out. I highly recommend it. Super fun.
