caligirl002 Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 I know there is always a lot of talk about GRE scores. I am considering taking the GRE again and thought I would try to get some opinions. I feel like my scores are mediocre. Verbal 153, Quantitative 144 and AW-4.5. I'm doing a post-bac program and have seven classes under my belt with a 3.9 GPA. I am not really wanting to take the test again, but if it is necessary I should start studying now. Thanks.
twinguy7 Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Your Verbal and AW are decent enough and thats all they really look at. What you could do is email the programs you will be applying to and ask if they suggest you give it another try. I had a AW of 3.0 and many programs I was applying to said I shouldn't worry about taking it again.
caligirl002 Posted July 1, 2014 Author Posted July 1, 2014 Thanks, that's a good idea. I really don't want to spend the money to take it again. It's just hard to know when I see so many people that have scores in the 160s and 4.0 GPA's.
sayjo Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 I don't think your GRE scores will HURT you, but they definitely won't HELP you. High GRE scores might make you stand out more, but I don't think your scores will keep you from getting into a program. As twinguy suggested, you should email prospective schools to make sure your scores meet the minimum cutoff requirements before you make your final decision.
caligirl002 Posted July 2, 2014 Author Posted July 2, 2014 Thanks! That was a good suggestion to email the programs. So far, I've heard that my scores "were in the ballpark."
CocoCoco Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 In my experience, most programs wanted a combined of around 300. My inital GRE score (scaled, from when I took it 6 years ago) was about a 295 combined. I have stats similar to yours as far as GPA, but I felt like I should give it one more shot just in case. I ended up with 153 verbal, 146 quantitative and AW 4.5....almost the exact same as your scores. I applied to 7 schools, was accepted by 4 and waitlisted at 3. I feel like the combination of the other factors can help if your GREs aren't EXACTLY a 300 combined. I wrote a kick-ass statement of purpose and asked for letter of rec from kick-ass profs where I felt I proved myself well as a student. GREs aren't everything.... Good luck!
dial1010usa Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 Is it possible someone can get same exact score 2nd time of GRE in every section of V, Q & AW? Possible it could be typo from ETS? Ever happened to someone or you heard of? Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks.
Chandru1 Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 ^ While unlikely, it seems to be mathematically possible to get the exact same number of questions right and wrong in two different sittings of the GRE.
