Thanks for the info, guys! MICA was my top pick, largely because Baltimore is a really great location for me geographically (proximity to other large east coast cities, plus proximity to my family). Honestly, moving to any city will be a culture shock for me (west virginia girl here) but I think once I get past that I will be fine. I also talked to Chris Harring in the grad department about the city, and he too mentioned how it is really up and coming in regards to the arts. Seems like a cool thing to be a part of!

I think you will like it coming from West Virginia. It has a slightly southern vibe, compared to the rest of the NE corridor.

University of North Carolina. Any thoughts on the program? Seems really solid. Not in NYC or LA, but other than that seems on par with the top programs.

Anyone visit, considering it, or have any thoughts on it in general?

I went to MICA undergrad, and loved Baltimore. It is a beautiful city, I lived in a mansion at one point for nothing. It used to be MICA graduates would run off to NY, Chicago or Philly but a lot of artists are staying and running spaces and doing other active things there. It is so close to DC, Philly and NY that you have lots of exposure to that too.

You need to be a little cautious there and keep your head up, but as long as you're not reckless or oblivious you will be fine. Just respect your community, look people in the eye, etc.

By the time I left I loved Baltimore, and felt ambivilant about MICA. don't be scared by Baltimore.

If you're looking at places to live, go north or south of campus, East and West Baltimore are more hardcore. Mt Vernon, Charles Village, Hampden. The area Between Hopkins and MICA

i agree - i love baltimore and loved baltimore when i lived in it. it's really fun and you can do a lot of things for nothing. Lots of friends live in giant 9,000 sq foot apartments in former warehouses for under $400 a month and there is a very vibrant underground scene. the foods not bad either. Franklin street is very easily accessible if you are interested in starting a gallery or project space. the thing to understand about baltimore is that the city is still recovering from the immense white flight of the '60s. racism from the 60's has had a lasting effect on segregating baltimore. which is very much at the fore of a lot of different groups of people's minds there right now though.  i lived in reservoir hill in baltimore, and I had the sweetest neighbors, some of whom once stopped my bike from being stolen. i also lived in station north, loved it, and never had a problem.

The immediate area surrounding MICA is fine. Have some level of street smarts and you'll be fine.

I considered this program last year. Notice came really late, and it seemed due to some faculty rearranging/upheaval. Hopefully that is well in the past by now. The students I spoke with seemed sharp, hardworking and friendly.

Okay people I finally called RISD for the painting MFA and I was not accepted. For some reason they thought it okay to just mail me a letter but not email me. lol.

NYU is driving me crazy. Anyone know what the deposit is? I emailed MaryAnn twice trying to get an answer. She's wonderful but always skips this question lol. Also did anyone call?

I am having a lot of trouble deciding between Syracuse University and Boston University

I caluclated it and Syracuse will only be 3000 dollars more for 3 year program  versus Boston for 2 years. The total I will pay is only 3000 dollars more ....

o_o Even if Boston gave me full tuition. I am torn up. I don't know which to do. They are kind of even in my mind.

Mintykid, for now Northwestern is winning the fight (I am still considering Cornell too), because honestly the money thing is a big deal for me as an international. Nevertheless, I know CMU seems like a better program ( more organized, has more graduate courses and more diverse teachers). But a third year of paying tuition and living would be too straining for my finances. I love the program, but I have to be smart and I would do it only if I see a clear advantage of attending the program in terms of career opportunities that could eventually help me repay the loans I'd have to take.

I've been trying to look for evidence of CMU alumni success but have found none... what have you heard about CMU? Why d you think it's a no-brainer?

I have the impression that CMU is an excellent program to become an artist of the expanded field. They seem to be very Pittsburgh-centered and I am starting to have the impression they're more focused on making academic artists.  So if you are a 100% into it, and would be willing to pay $30 000 for the experience, it's an easy choice.

Thanks for responding! I had a few friends studying for their BFA at CMU and have only heard positive things from them (faculty involvement/support, facilities, community..) but now that you mention that the school is focused on making "academic artists" I sort of see that now. It seems that CMU stresses and supports academic assistantships and value the balance of artmaking and teaching a bit more than other programs but I see this as only beneficial towards my practice. I am international as well so my decision is influenced by money/funding...I see that Northwestern has granted you a sweet deal! Congrats, full ride?? that's amazing!! I think I am going to end up choosing the school that offered me the most money. I really want to attended CMU (program and also city location which is important to me...opportunities outside of school) but pputting things in perspective, I think it's best to take advantage of the funding I am being offered by other schools...but it's so hard to let cmu go! haha Plus I think i would feel more comfortable spending money on materials to explore and take my work to the next "level" if I know that i'm supported financially by the school???????

I'm making my decision tonight...as of now i've declined upenn, alfred and cornell.......so idk how waitlist works but maybe possible spots have opened up for anyone on waitlist?!? It's come down to northwestern, keeping cmu in the loop and waiting for nyu.....

CCA is a pretty amazing place. Really really Great program. More theory then technical. More conceptual. My friend went there and got a super nice job in SF afterwards because of the connections. The bay area is a lot. But there's so many scholarships for grad students who study there. If you decide CCA, look into those and you'll be fine

Thanks for the response, heyward!! Appreciate the thoughts. Theory v. technical is def what I am looking for in an interdisciplinary environment. Curious if you know any scholarships for students in the area - I'm from NYC, so not as familiar with the landscape in SF. Trying to find a way to make living expenses work, ahh!

Haha, YES I AM! Don't worry I'm terrible with names too. BTW, I'm Tiffanie.

hey guys,

may i know who did u guys interviewed with?

I interviewed with Maureen Gallace, Marlene McCarthy, and Jordan Albaugh. It was a good interview. I had a sinus infection so my head was all foggy - I'm hoping they are understanding as I'm terrible on paper... in person is my strong point I'm just hoping I didn't screw it up as much as I think I did.

There's a group of them you can apply for but after you start your MFA practice. CCA will give you information on these when you're there. Sounds like CCA would be a good fit for you. The Bay Area is great and the way of life in California is amazing with health a priority. But I grew up here so I'm biased

I'm stuck between fully funded and stipend from University of Iowa and Hunter College with little to no funding.  Both for painting.  Any thoughts?

Big differences in those programs.

Hey! well obviously the best would be NYU offering you good funding! Honestly, my deal with CMU comes to the fact that with their offer I don't have enough funds for a third year (I have loans for 2 years only)  and I just don't want to risk not being able to finish my MFA because of money issues. Nevertheless, I feel you when you say it's not easy to let go. It would be a tremendous experience. And as you said, teaching can be very profitable for your development, not to mention it looks good on your resume, if you ever want to teach in the future. I plan to go back to my country as soon as I finish, so teaching is indeed in my future plans. What about you?

You are right about the economic factor putting stress on the outcome of your work. I know that when I feel tight about the money my work immediately becomes more ephemeral haha. Not that it's bad, but I'd rather be in control of that. What did Northwestern offer you? Isn't the offering the same for everybody? Anyways it seems like we got into the same programs. We might end up being mfa pals  8)
