Fall 2015 Application Season . . . PhD Education

PhDEducation

Recommended Posts

I have spent way to much time on this thread since my decision last spring to start looking at PhD programs in Education. This fall I have  begun the application process, with a specific focus in Teaching and Teacher Education, with a side of Policy.

I thought we could start a thread to pull us together and share information. I am looking at a host of programs I have applied to 4 at the moment with another 4 in progress.

Where are you at?

I'm applying to an EdD program for the Fall 2015. Just finished the application last week. All of my LORs came in shockingly fast and I submitted my final bit of paperwork today. So now I wait. The early deadline is Jan 21st and the other deadline is in March, I think. All I know is that I should hear something between 4-6 weeks after the deadline...unfortunately I don't know if that is the early deadline or the regular deadline...so I guess I'll just have to be surprised. It's gonna be a looooooong winter!

Maybe we can have this be a little more lively as decisions have/should start rolling in soon. I'd love to have other PhD applicants to chat with!

Hi All!

I am applying to some Education programs for studying the History of Education/Educational History.  Anyone else interested in historical research or policy?  The programs I applied to are Stanford, Wisconsin, NYU, and CUNY Grad Center.  I am also applying to traditional history programs that have historians who research educational issues.  I have taught/consulted for 10 years in NYC Public Schools and have a masters in teaching and another masters in history.  So this PhD track will try to bring all of that together! I can't decide if this hybrid approach is genius or will doom my applications! :)

Good luck to all as we are getting closer to decision time!

Hey! I'm also applying to History of Education programs :)  I have way less experience than you have and I'm international (from France). I have never studied Education directly, which is why I'm applying to graduate school. My background is English & American History. Like you, I'm not sure if it's a good or a bad thing.

I also applied to Stanford and NYU -- but will probably withdraw my app from NYU because I applied to Master's and there's no way I'll be able to afford it. So fingers crossed for a PhD at Stanford, Columbia & IU-UC in my case! You seem like you're a great fit for that kind of program though!

Camly91,

It's great to hear from another educational historian!  My experience just means it took me a long time to get back around to academia.  :)

The NYU program seems really great.  I got a chance to talk to Professor Zimmerman who chairs Educational History.  He would be a really great adviser, I think. But I understand about not wanting to pay for a masters and to go straight for a PhD.

What time period/topics do you want to focus on for your research?  For my masters in history I became interested in late 19th and early 20th century school system building in the U.S. and also the Philippines.  I am hoping to be able to continue this research next year!

Good luck with your programs.

Always amazes me how many different research topics emerge in the same field! I'm actually in the process of writing my Master's thesis on high school extracurricular activities in the 70s in a small city in North Carolina, and I'm definitely trying to keep the same research topic and expand it for a dissertation! Good luck to you -- I'll let you know if I hear back!

Have any of you started to hear back? I've heard from OSU and MSU with both admits! Feeling happy and nervous to make decisions.

I haven't applied to an Edu school directly just yet, but will be soon. Masters with a hope of shifting to their PhD program. I'm interested in New Media and public education, especially Teacher Education and youth studies. I'm mostly interested in Indiana University and Purdue. Anyone applying there as well? Or know much about the programs. School of Edu websites are so much more difficult to navigate than compared to programs that mainly cater towards academic bound students (compared to professional students).

I got rejected from Vanderbilt yesterday.  That's the only one of the seven programs that I've applied to.  It was my "why not try" school so I'm not too surprised.  Here's hoping we hear back from some others soon!

Sorry to hear, but good luck on the others! 7 app gives you plenty of leg room!

Hang in there! Remember, you really only need one acceptance because--after all--you can only attend one school. So put the one rejection out of your mind and concentrate on the other six possibilities! :) (I know that may not be terribly helpful, but that's what I keep reminding myself.)

@HEPhD13 Can I ask which programs at OSU and MSU you have applied to? I applied to both programs but havent heard any news from them :( so nervous.

Sure! HALE @ MSU and HESA @ OSU. From my understanding, all the different programs have their own method and timeline so if you haven't heard back, there is a likelihood your department hasn't made contact yet. Good luck!

Thanks everyone!  I'm hoping for good news in the next few weeks.  I just wish all of the schools decided at the same time.  It looks like a few of my programs might not let me know until the beginning of March.

I know! I guess I'm grateful for any news, but once decisions start coming in, it's hard not to want decisions across the board! My husband always reminds me that these problems/issues are "first world" problems, and that quiets me a bit! (Of course, I remind him that it's all relative...haha!) Anyway, just know that you are not alone. :)

Hey all,

It's good to hear from other people playing the waiting game!

I got accepted into the SCAE PhD program at Pittsburgh last week. Very exciting!...but only half the battle since the department and I must search for funding. Still waiting to hear back from Vanderbilt and UVA.

Good luck everyone! May the best fit fall into place.

DYINNNGGG.....

I've already crossed out a lot of schools in my mind since all interviews seem to have been sent out..

Waiting is a hard game!!  A game I do not like to play :(

don't give up just yet! after seeing weeks ago that someone had been offered an interview to a program I applied to, I assumed that no interview meant no chance. I got a call from that program two days ago saying I'm being recommended for admission.

I wish programs were more transparent about their timelines and decision-making processes! I agree, the waiting game is a tough one.
