Persis Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 (edited) Hello everyone, A school sent me a letter inviting me to apply to their program for Fall. The letter states that my background and motivation has caught their attention. I find this really weird since this program is so competitive to get into. Is this normal? or do they just want the application fee? It also states that i would be automatically considered for any available scholarships and receive special attention in the review process. I don't understand where they even got my information from perhaps through the schools i have already applied to? What should i do? Any advice would be helpful. The deadline is the 15th of this month. Thanks. Edited January 3, 2015 by Persis
MathCat Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Did you write the GRE and allow them to enter you into their search database? It allows schools to search for potential applicants so that they can recruit them. I've gotten several of those emails as a result. You could contact the department if you are seriously interested, but I wouldn't apply just because you got such an email. It might mean nothing.
BEAtheSLP Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Was it University of Maine? If so, I got the same exact letter. I already have an application in progress for them, so I was thinking they were sending me the letter to ensure they got their 30$ application fee....but who knows.
MathCat Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 If you've already started an application, it might mean that they are genuinely interested in whatever information you've entered. But this would of course depend on how much stuff you uploaded. If it's missing transcripts, SOP, and LORs, it's probably not that significant...

Yes, it is University of Maine, however, i had no intention or have i applied there before.

Yes, i did write the GRE, but i am not sure about entering me into their search database. Plus i didn't have the best of scores.

I had no interest in applying there. I have no idea how they even got my info. It seems creepy to me.
med latte Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 I wonder if the school may have purchased a mailing list from a professional organization or academic society.
danielle4114 Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 I got the same letter from the University of Maine... I think it's associated with the GRE and selecting a box that allows people to contact you
