MaxWeberHasAPosse Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 For those of you who've been awarded fellowships, has the program stipulated that you're not allowed to work? I think this is the norm. We were talking about this in another thread, also. I'm not sure how one could work and be successful in a PhD program. Either way, at any (serious) program, work is limited to TA or RA. I inquired about working half-time, and they gave me a firm "no." Apparently this fellowship requires that students not work at all, not even in a GA/RA capacity.
Simmelove Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Anyone else receive a "no" from UChicago? I can't tell if it's just for the PhD program or for the PhD/maybe you'll get MAPSS instead program. I got my rejection for the PhD and acceptance into MAPPS at the same time today. Hope this helps!
uselesstheory Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 MAPSS went out today, with scholarship information.
dw3000 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Can someone call to ask Boston Uni if the accepted results are all out. I called them that day and forgot to ask this. And I feel bad for bothering them again.
SarahDF Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Has anyone accepted at Wisconsin gotten specific funding information? The acceptance letter only had general funding info. Alice Justice said that they will provide specific packages once the cohort if finalized, but this makes me nervous. I am wondering whether anyone has been given specific information yet. Thanks! (You can PM me if you prefer.)
rlb Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Whoever got taken off the waiting list at UCSD I would love it if you'd PM me, I have some questions! Thanks!

(You can PM me if you prefer.) I haven't heard anything yet. I'm also very curious. Any insight into cost of living in the area? The example stipends they mentioned (for TAs, RAs, or students on fellowships) may not vary much in absolute terms, but those "small" differences are pretty significant when that's how one would get by.
sdr2659 Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 (edited) I know this is a bit off topic, but this seems like the most popular thread on here.Does anyone have any opinions about the University of Connecticut? It's a lower ranked program but it seemed to have attracted a lot of younger faculty who are getting published in a fair amount of top journals in recent years. I'm currently waitlisted but trying to get a better sense of the program in case I do get taken off the waitlist. Any thoughts or opinions about the program would be greatly appreciated. asheleeyang Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Anybody NOT heard back from UPenn and USC? Just out of curiosity....
SarahDF Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Anybody NOT heard back from UPenn and USC? Just out of curiosity.... I am also waiting on both UPenn and USC. I assume we must be on some sort of unofficial waitlist since I've seen both acceptances and rejections reported.
sociology1 Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Is anyone claiming the Development Sociology Cornell rejections? I am very anxious to hear back from them, I've have heard nothing as of yet. I'd love to talk with anyone who has been accepted into the Sociology PhD program already!
buencabro Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Penn applicants, how do you check your status? On applyweb? I still haven't heard anything either, I assume it's a rejection because it's so late, but it'd be nice to know!

I assume we must be on some sort of unofficial waitlist since I've seen both acceptances and rejections reported. I'm also waiting on UPenn, though I had assumed my rejection notification simply got lost in the shuffle. It'd be nice if I'm still being considered- though I'm sick of waiting, that's for sure.
TheLuckyOne Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Penn applicants, how do you check your status? On applyweb? I still haven't heard anything either, I assume it's a rejection because it's so late, but it'd be nice to know! I received an email telling me to check the application portal. After logging into the portal, under the status for the recommendation letters, there was a decision letter.
IncomingPhD2017 Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I decided to email UPenn to get some clarity, and they emailed back promptly to tell me that I was on the waitlist. Nice to know- wish they could've told me sooner!
MisterFour Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 I hope I get accepted into UNL (I am on waitlist). They seem to have a really great program for my own interests and some interesting research on friendships which I did a thesis on(and got an article in The Guardian (I am still really excited about that, sorry!).
rlb Posted March 17, 2015 Posted March 17, 2015 Finally got into Brandeis!! Was on wait list for about a month. So happy! I will definitely be accepting! uselesstheory and Anonymona 2

shilpav82 Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Hi. I've applied to UConn for Phd Sociology. Have any of you applied there? If yes, have you heard from them?
sdr2659 Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Hi. I've applied to UConn for Phd Sociology. Have any of you applied there? If yes, have you heard from them? I emailed Mary Fischer on 3/5 and got the follow response, "This process can go on until mid-April. I know the uncertainty can be frustrating but we basically can only make offers when we know we can fully fund a student. Thus applicants have to turn us down (or new monies must come in) before we can extend new offers" If you decided to email her and get an update, please let me know.
