Hani2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I have seen some students got rejected saying: " I expected a rejection after waiting for so long. " is that true? I applied for UCLA, Phd. In the department I applied for, in Feb, I saw some got accepted and some got rejected. non of them in the same track I applied for, except one, but he got rejected. I contacted the department, they said to me: your application is still under review .
Tianmeihua Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I really, really hope it is not true. I applied to a program in September with a deadline on January fifteenth. People I spoke with said it is really competitive (they only take 12-15 students a year), but I am still hoping I have a tiny chance. I also heard the opposite, that some schools send rejections first. Maybe it is just a thing for certain programs?

I do not know. sometimes I say why I have not been rejected so far if the rejection is my fate. that's give a tiny hope. Edited March 6, 2015 by Hani2015
Hani2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Author Posted March 6, 2015 (edited) It has been true in my case. does that also mean you were on informal wait-list? I have heard that some schools do not announce a wait-list because they got annoyed by wait-listed applicants. Edited March 6, 2015 by Hani2015
Chiqui74 Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 No, I only got on the waiting list for Michigan. The other ones were outright rejections.
MathCat Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I think it depends on whether or not the program sends their acceptances much earlier than rejections. For example, UC Berkeley routinely sends their admissions a month before they reject anyone (I don't know why, it seems unnecessary). If lots of people have been admitted much earlier and nobody has yet been rejected, I think it is generally safe to assume you are either rejected or on a waitlist. The waitlist might be informal - you aren't part of the "first round" offers, but as people decline, they will admit more, and they don't officially tell you you're in this pool. There will always be exceptions, so don't make any decisions until you have officially heard one way or another, I'd say.
bbdd2 Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Well i had an interview three weeks ago and i haven't heard back. I think its a rejection. sigh.....
loreille Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Well i had an interview three weeks ago and i haven't heard back. I think its a rejection. sigh..... Not necessarily. It's still pretty early, and they may send out offers in rounds. Keep your head up! bbdd2 1
coleoptera Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Still being in the game at this point is better than an immediate rejection, which some programs do alongside first wave admits. They could be working in waves, going from an unofficial waitlist, or just delayed in general. There aren't many ways to tell for sure exactly what the situation is unless you're psychic, in which case, could you tell me why it's a week past from when my program said I'd be notified either way and I haven't heard anything?
emhafe Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Some programs go through rounds of applicants, rejecting people at each step. I know one of the programs I am waiting to hear from does that, so I would rather be waiting for a while longer than getting an email with a rejection. All depends on the school and program.

I think that's right. but why programs do that. they should review all applications together and see which application is better. poweredbycoldfusion 1
normajeane Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 If you know they've sent rejections, it means you're application is indeed still under consideration and you're quite possibly a filler for the incoming class depending how many people initially accept their seats. you're not out of the race, but you're not head of the pack. this is both a good and a bad thing, good because you havn't been denied, bad because you're stuck in limbo. I know for a fact one of the schools I applied for has sent acceptances and rejections, but I have not heard anything which means I'm still under consideration. hope that helped michigan girl 1
nonickname Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Well i had an interview three weeks ago and i haven't heard back. I think its a rejection. sigh..... Same here. I'm kinda trying to prepare myself for getting a rejection letter. It's extremely excruciating because even at this moment of writing this, I know I still have that little hope of getting accepted.
foreignstudent Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Same here I had an interview a month ago and have not heard back yet!! I have already got rejection from most of the schools I applied and I am bracing myself for the final straw....
Hani2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Author Posted March 8, 2015 (edited) I can't wait anymore. Applied to 7 universities. no single word from any of them . getting 7 rejections together will be extremely disappointing. Edited March 8, 2015 by Hani2015
Can't Complain Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I sincerely hope that isn't true! I'd applied to 10 schools. Got 2 rejects and still waiting for decisions from 8. Got positive responses from the POI at 3 of these. One school said I would hear back from the admissions committee soon. This was two Mondays ago. I wonder how soon is 'soon'. Getting any more rejects before an admit will be hard...
SeanDDavies Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I was wait listed after interview. I thought the interview went very well. I got an offer from another program and contacted POI from school I was wait listed to see if they could update me, then got rejected. Didn't get any explanation. I have checked forums and it seems that no one else has posted anything about being rejected. Does this seem unusual?

RachaelMC Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I got admitted to the University of Rochester, without interview, comparably late in the game. I guess I was on the second round of admissions. Still, it was a nice surprise!
Pych Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I got a same situation like you. I've been waiting the admission for long time and I assumed that I got automatically rejected. However, I've just got an email from the academic support specialist to say that I am in the waitlist. So, waiting for long time doesn't mean you are rejected, but you are not in the first round of admits.
Perhaps Later Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 It doesn't necessarily mean a rejection. Some of my friends got their acceptance letters about 5-6 months after they submitted their applications.
Hani2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Author Posted March 11, 2015 I have just called one university. they said to me your status is still under review and that a good news for u. I said to her how? she said that some rejections already have been sent.
TheMercySeat Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 (edited) My POI sent me a very polite (unsolicited) email explaining to me that the department just sent the dean a wish list of applicants, and that acceptances cannot be extended until the dean approves. She said that I will probably hear from her in about a week. I speculate that most programs do a lot of negotiation both within and outside the department before they're allowed to make formal offers. It must be an arduous process for all involved, especially when dealing with limited resources. It's not easy, but try to sit tight! Edited March 11, 2015 by TheMercySeat
mckparis Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 No! I waited 2 1/2 months to find out I was wait listed, then accepted two days later. Don't bank on a long wait or silence as a 'no'. .letmeinplz//, PhDEducation and worried2018 1 2
