NCSLP Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Does anyone have suggestions on how to spend the summer between undergrad and grad? Working and saving up some money sounds ideal but what kind of job could one get (other than a retail or restaurant type job)? Would love to hear any ideas or suggestions!
kmfl9 Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I am using Care.com to find nanny positions for the summer! It will definitely help prepare me for therapy preparation (like using a kid's interests to develop activities) and interacting with kids more than waiting tables would, and honestly it pays pretty well. delete-account 1

Great idea, thanks!
delete-account Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I've also been on Care.com this semester and plan on using it throughout the summer. It's quite amazing and I have worked with a variety of children, from typically to atypically developing. It has also given me the opportunity to make my own schedule, more or less, allowing time for shadowing in speech clinics. And kmfl9 is right... it pays pretty well!
S_Colorado Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 If you are relocating, I suggest relocating earlier in the summer. This gives you some times to get settled and get any sort of paperwork you might need to do (establishing residency for example) before classes start. Plus if you want to do care.com or work in a camp program, it is nice to do that in your new city because you might be able to do it next summer, or part time during the year as well. twinguy7 1
mbslp2014 Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I am doing aba therapy..I work with a team of professionals (ot, SLP, bcba, and social worker) this is the closest you'll get to actually working in a clinic Shayy_Dee 1
LlamaMama Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I will be taking general ed classes required for eventual licensure (I need statistics and biology). Should be a challenge--I have 3 kids and they'll be out of school for the summer!
Madison. Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 You could also do nothing. Sit back, relax and wait for the craziness of grad school! graceSLP, NSSLHANerd, futurespeechie and 1 other 4
Liz113 Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 I will probably just be applying to an amusement park and getting lots of hours to save up for grad school. Not fun, but practical and I know I can quit with zero repercussions whenever makes the most sense b/c I won't be going back.
anslpaday Posted March 20, 2015 Posted March 20, 2015 I'll be traveling! But that's more because I have a serious case of wanderlust and the idea of 2+ years in the same place is going to be hard for me. graceSLP 1
SpeechieAsh Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 I'm on care.com too! It's a great resource and I've found some amazing families on there. I plan on continuing to work as a nanny until I move out of state. I love the flexibility of making my own schedule. My acceptance is still pretty new so I still have a lot of planning to do... Type of housing, location, roommate vs. no roommate, moving arrangements and costs, etc.
LlamaMama Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 Ha ha, anyone want to bypass care.com and work for me, babysitting my 3 kids? I'm in NJ:)
SLPosteriorCricoarytenoid Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Hi everyone, just thought I would revive this thread. I have been trying to brainstorm things I could do this summer to prepare for graduate study in the fall. I have been thinking about skimming and rereading some of my textbooks, especially for fluency and artic/phono disorders. I also am trying to navigate the ropes of what I am supposed to be doing to plan a thesis. I have heard that many students (and professors) suggest starting a literature review in the summer before the fall semester since the fall semester can be a busy transition time. I feel like I don't have the slightest idea of how to do a thesis, but I might try to look into some interesting topics this summer. I would like to get going on my thesis since I hear it is a huge undertaking. This may be a silly question, but does anyone have ideas on where I could find things to give me ideas for a potential thesis topic? I browsed a few SLP journals recently but I have plenty more searching to do. Lastly, does anyone have any suggested readings or other things that would be useful to do this summer? Any interesting books related to SLP would interest me! Thanks!
timberlake Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 I'll be working/traveling before grad school. I start in January, so I accepted a short term job working with kids living on a military base in Hawaii. Hi everyone, just thought I would revive this thread. On this blog entry (https://slpecho.wordpress.com/2013/05/20/slp2b-summer-reading-list/) SLPEcho compiled a summer reading list/grad school resource. I think #4 would be a great place to search for thesis topics.
kayyyyy_ Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 I'm just working the whole time. :[ trying to save up as much money as possible in case I have to relocate.
