I just got my writing scores back and it's a lot lower than I thought it was going to be. I have a 160 verb, 161 quant and a 4.0 in writing. Should I retake the GRE if I want to be competitive at top schools like Vanderbilt?

Schools are fine with a 4.0. I wouldn't worry with those scores!

Totally depends what your GPA is. 4.0 on writing isn't a bad score.

I can't say if the 4 will hurt your chances at Vanderbilt, but I got in with a 5. I you do end up retaking, I found that writing as much as humanly possible worked well. Length is a big determinant of score, as dumb as that is. As long as it makes sense.

Your percentiles are super good! I think that's a great score. 4 & higher is what they look for

You're a shoe-in with those scores congratulations!

My advisor said anything above 3.5 is good for writing, so you should be fine! :)

As long as your overall application is good, you are good to go. You V & Q scores are great. Do not retake.

According to ASHA's EdFind, Vanderbilt lists accepting those with written GRE scores between 4.0-5.5. If Vanderbilt is your top pick, I would say it's worth taking again only if you feel confident you could improve your score and the prepping/studying wouldn't take away from your current studies.
