Thanks4Downvoting Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 So, what do you think about the new forum layout? I happen to love it!
bgk Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 So, what do you think about the new forum layout? I happen to love it! Of course, I had to vote like that...
kahlan_amnell Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 (edited) How do you tell if a forum has new posts with this new layout? I don't see any key to what the graphics mean, and I can't tell where the new posts are at a glance. It looks nice, but isn't that functional for me, at least until I figure out how it works. EDIT: Ok, I've figured out how to tell if there are new posts, but I still like the old look better. Edited October 16, 2009 by kahlan_amnell

The key/legend is at the bottom of any forum page, e.g. click and scroll to the bottom.
acup313 Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 I really actually like it. The old format was very functional, and I will have to work with this one, but this one definitely seems like it will be much better and it looks better.

The old format was definitely functional with its own share of character, but this one just has many more possibilities and looks plain awesome!
fuzzylogician Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Right now I miss the old format, which had great functionality. It could just be a matter of time and getting used to the new format, which I agree looks much better. I think a "how-to" faq could be useful right about now.
kahlan_amnell Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 The key/legend is at the bottom of any forum page, e.g. click and scroll to the bottom. It is not at the bottom of the main index, where I would argue it is most needed. Also, how do you quote more than one person in the same post in this new system?
bgk Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Also, how do you quote more than one person in the same post in this new system? Toggle multiquote on the posts you wish to quote, then click the big "Add Reply" button at the bottom of the thread. As for the Legend - I'll see about adding it there to.

As for the Legend - I'll see about adding it there to. Hum, that makes sense, though it is not as easy as in the old system.
Thanks4Downvoting Posted October 17, 2009 Author Posted October 17, 2009 Seems like there's varying opinions, mostly stemming from the fact that the system will take a little while to learn. Just give it time and I bet most people will really like the new layou!
kahlan_amnell Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 (edited) When I read all the posts in a forum, it still says there are unread posts until I mark all posts read in the "view new content" section, or use the link to "mark this forum read". It does not do this automatically when all posts in a forum have been read. This is somewhat annoying. Edited October 17, 2009 by kahlan_amnell
jlee306 Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 Not a big fan of change! Although the new format looks good, it is not as functional as the old. It will take some getting use to.

Looks like this is a "bug" with the current version of the s/w. It's marked as critical, so I expect a fix soon. Not a big fan of change! Although the new format looks good, it is not as functional as the old. It will take some getting use to. I'm not sure how to interpret "not as functional"; it's certainly not so basic as the old s/w. Give it some time though. I'm happy to make changes so that we can all get along nicely with this new system!

I'm happy to make changes so that we can all get along nicely with this new system! I think everybody is saying "functional" merely because we were used to the old version and knew how to operate it...whereas with the new version, it is not automatically "functional" because we are still trying to figure the new changes out. I will become more functional with the more we mess around with it. P.S. why do I have to download spellcheck on my own? It says this website needs a license to use spellcheck.
fuzzylogician Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 I'm not sure how to interpret "not as functional"; it's certainly not so basic as the old s/w. Give it some time though. I'm happy to make changes so that we can all get along nicely with this new system! When I say "not as functional" I mean that there are several features in the old system that I can't find in this new system, or that I find not as useful. For example - I'm missing the possibility of jumping to the last unread post from inside a thread. I usually like to read the opening post in a thread and first 1-2 replies to remind myself what a discussion is about, then jump to the end and see what's been recently added. I can't do that now. Same thing for quotes - you can only select something and quote it when you open a reply page. But I haven't found a good way to add a quote mid-way through replying except for manually adding the poster's details and copy-pasting what I wanted to address. Adding multiple quotes is especially annoying to add that way. There's the posts not being marked as read, but hopefully that'll be fixed soon. One of the main things that bother me is that this site seems to rely on working with icons instead of click-able text links, but I can't always guess what an icon is for and where to find the one I need. I do think the site looks much better now, but it'll take some getting used to.

OK - I wasn't being defensive, I just wasn't sure if you meant "functional" as in "plain and simple but the got the job done" or "had lots of functions which are now missing". Can you clarify your issue with the spell check thing? Is that something in your browser? Or some board feature I am unaware of? ... For example - I'm missing the possibility of .... OK - thanks for the feedback. I'll keep an eye out for any modifications which restore this functionality!

kahlan_amnell Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 I've just done a bit of research. Looks like this is a "bug" with the current version of the s/w. It's marked as critical, so I expect a fix soon. That is indeed a critical flaw, one they should not have let the current version out still containing. Here's hoping it gets fixed soon. Also, I can't get multi-quotes to work. I just clicked two posts to quote in this post, and only one appeared. Perhaps I'm doing it wrong somehow?

Can you clarify your issue with the spell check thing? Is that something in your browser? Or some board feature I am unaware of? I didn't think you were being defensive. What I meant by the spell check thing was that when I click on the ABC spell check link, it pops up with a box that states: "ieSpell was not detected. Click OK to go to the download page." Then it gives you the option of "OK" or "Cancel." When I click the "OK" option, it pulls up another webpage and states: "Important - ieSpell is free for personal use only. Commercial use requires a separate license. See Licensing for more information." It wants me to download something but I have not done so because I do not really know what it's going to do. In other words, instead of checking my spelling when I click on the ABC link in the upper right corner of the text box, it prompts me to download something. Hope this makes sense.

I'll implement the fix as soon as they post it. For multi-quotes are you sure you used the "Add Reply" button at the bottom of the thread, as opposed to the in-post "Reply" button?

Hi there, As far as I can tell: this is a plugin that you are installing on your computer for your own use. The option appears only with IE on Windows. It is not shipped with IP.Board and thus is not part of the commercial offering. You are welcome to install it. I'll see if there is a better/different spelling mod that applies to all browsers...

I also wanted to add a good thing about the new forum layout...I really like the status update feature. That is one change I really enjoy!
KieBelle Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 So I'll admit I was unsure about the new look at first, but I've decided I love it! It'll take a little while to get totally comfortable with it, but so far I'm happy.
