KaySsaem Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Do any of you know how long I should expect to wait between submission and decision? I submitted about two weeks ago and--though I know it has only been a short while since I submitted--I'm starting to get anxious.

Penn's official wait time is 6-8 weeks, but I found out in 3-4 weeks from the time it said "Ready for Review."
juanmesh Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Hello, does anyone who attended the Doctoral weekend know when applicants are likely to hear back? And anyone willing to share their experience? Thanks very much.
forjuan Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 (edited) The Weekend was nice. Brussels sprouts were terrible. There were maybe 50ish people in attendance since it was for both PhD and EdD applicants. I overheard that attendees should hear back by the first week of March, but not sure how accurate that is. rfb211 Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Has anyone heard from the Ed Policy M.S. Ed yet? I submitted Nov. 29 and it was ready for review Nov. 30 and I still haven't heard back. Starting to freak out!

Sorry to hear you've been waiting for so long But I doubt that's a bad sign in any way, most likely just a neutral thing. Some programs are definitely slower than others. It's very possible they weren't going to even look at masters applicants until 2016.... Fingers crossed you hear back soon! Edited February 9, 2016 by Heather1011 rfb211 1

Vulpix Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 For those who filled out the FAFSA---I'm looking at my receipt and lightly panicking because it was sent to University of Pennsylvania and does not indicate GSE (whereas for HGSE it says GSE on my FAFSA, and TC was a separate entity from Columbia so I know it went to them). Did you send your FAFSA directly to GSE, or is Penn fine?
Vulpix Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Congrats to whoever posted on the results page about IEDP! I'm heavily leaning toward Penn and would love to chat about it, PM me
jlt646 Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Congratulations to the Ed Policy PhD acceptance on the results board!

endlesscoffee Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Applied for the PhD program in ISHD. Was notified yesterday that I was accepted for the MSeD program instead. Highly considering it (since other doctorate applications aren't turning out great). Wondering how I'm going to be able to pay for it though... Nonetheless very excited! mjsmith 1

Kompetent Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 (edited) I've been lurking here and feeding my anxiety and sort of pointlessly weighing my chances. So I guess I should contribute to give back. Thanks to everyone who provided me those outlets. As for me, well the last couple of months have been: Me - Hey, College, can I come get a PhD? College - Nah, but maybe we'll let you get a Master's instead... GPA: 3.83, majors in Philosophy and German from UC Berkeley. GRE: 164 math, 170 verbal, 4.5 writing Background - 2 years in an AmeriCorps program tutoring/counseling underserved high school students while in college, 3 years teaching at a failing school (TFA), 1 year as a school leader at the same school. Edit - also a former reserve in the US Marine Corps. So a veteran, but ineligible for most Yellow Ribbon programs due to not enough active service. Applied to PhD programs that could combine my passions for philosophy and education, with an anthropological twist. CIS at Harvard, SHIPS at Stanford, ECS at Penn, Philosophy and Education at Teachers College, Social and Cultural Studies at Cal, and Cultural Studies at UT Austin. Stanford and Harvard I know defer to master's pools if rejected from PhD. Well, rejected from both. Waiting to hear back from POLS at Stanford and Special Studies at Harvard. Austin told me no PhD, but offered a 2 year master's. I didn't know they do that. Their website now says you can't get a PhD without a master's. I could swear they didn't have that on the website when I applied in the Fall, but I could be wrong. No word from Cal or TC. Penn: Got a the nicest "rejection" email I've ever received earlier in the week saying I wasn't accepted into the PhD but it was a tough decision. They decided to accept me into the ECS M.S.Ed and said that I would receive the official acceptance later in the week. It was a very personalized and sincere email that even quoted my SOP. I think that reflects extremely well on the program. Like Austin, I didn't know this was a possibility. Today I received the official acceptance, along with a 10k scholarship and a 3.5k GA position. Other posters say this is the max ever awarded, so that is a boost to my spirits. Now I just wait for what's left and try to decide where to go. Best of luck to everyone else! Thanks for sharing, congrats on the two acceptances! I think Penn GSE seems to care very much about is applicants, as evidenced by its free application and personalized rejections and other responses. They've been very accommodating and attentive in all my personal communications with me. mjsmith 1
jlt646 Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 Rejected from the Education Policy PhD, but accepted to the MsEd with a $13.5k scholarship. Not sure how I feel about this option, because it still means about a zillion dollars in loans, and I was accepted to another PhD program with GA funding. Just kidding. I know how I feel about this option. I feel negatively. That's so much loan debt.

Penn has amazing programs, but if you've gotten into a Ph.D program that you're after then it wouldn't make sense to go to Penn for a Masters and take out debt. Congratz on your offer! Congratz on your acceptance! --- I've applied to Penn's Higher Ed Masters in Oct I believe, but haven't heard back. Anyone else here back yet? Edited February 28, 2016 by Dracos
vandemataram Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 Hey everyone! I've lurked here forever, but I'm finally joining the conversation with a plea... Has anyone been accepted to the Ed Policy PhD program and isn't planning to attend? Or know anyone in that situation? I'm on the waitlist and am trying to wait patiently but I'm practically ripping my hair out from the nerves!!! If anyone isn't attending, I'd love it if you could let me know (or better yet, let the program know!) Good luck to everyone else stuck in purgatory! And congrats to all who got in!!!
KaySsaem Posted March 1, 2016 Posted March 1, 2016 I wonder if the reason the M.S.Ed. in Policy decisions seem to be taking so long is because they are waiting to hear back from Ph.D. applicants offered master's positions.

You went for the doctoral weekend? Did you get a good feeling from it? I couldn't attend the weekend (int'l applicant) so had an interview - a great one IMO, but now, I'm on the waitlist for the Quantitative Methods programme . Edited March 1, 2016 by juanmesh Original post sounded like an interrogation :).

All of the other interviewees were super qualified (and generally cool people) so I totally understand why I was waitlisted! I'm just a ball of nerves because so far I have two waitlists, one rejection, and one masters acceptance instead of PhD. Only waiting on one more, so hopefully either that or one of the waitlists works out! Good luck to you!!!
