Yeesh, the first post asked if you have a real job or not, it wasn't my word in the first place. I even added quotes to try to not offend those who aren't "professionals."

I DID have an office job (full-time and beyond!), but I resigned upon being accepted to grad school.

I made significant money and had a fancy title, but it wasn't worth the whole soul-crushing, hating life, being responsible for boring but important things and never getting to take a day off aspect.

Now I am working part time at a museum for the summer! It is AWESOME. I greet each morning with joy and seriously love what I do. What a refreshing feeling!

I work to crappy part time jobs. Crap Job # 1 = "lab assistant." They tricked me and told me I'd be a lab assistant, but really I make solution every now and then. The rest of the time I fill bottles. Joy.

I teach at a Big Picture high school (bigpicture.org). The school is very focused on "real-world learning" and "authentic assessment," so we get to do lots of projects based around students' interests. Our kids like horror films, so we did a unit on zombies. Along the way, we covered viral infection, exponential growth, population ecology and demographics, descriptive language (using tons of Max Brooks, of course)...Needless to say, tons of fun.

If you're a big gamer, you should see if you can keep working at GameStop for like one day a month to keep your discount. One of my friends was in a boat fairly similar to yours and has been doing the one Saturday a month thing for a couple of years.

That sounds similar to my position, minus the whole being important thing. Haha. I'm pretty low on the totem pole, but I'm working a full-time office job as a data entry analyst. My schedule is pretty rigid, but I make good money (compared to what I made before graduating college) and get weekends off. Though I can't take any time off either, but for a different reason - because I'm basically a temp and if I take a day off, I don't get paid. I'm terrified to leave this job to go to grad school though, but it might not even be a problem if I don't get extended past my contract expiration date in July (my company contracts new workers for 90 days and you can get extended up to a year before becoming permanent or being terminated though sometimes it can take as little as six months to become permanent). I guess the reason I'm afraid to leave is because right now I can save lots of money since my expenses are limited and my undergrad loans are still in grace period until June (!). I just don't like the idea of coming out of grad school with a Master's and still not being able to find a job.

If only this had been around when I was a high school student! I love zombie flicks and it's even better that you guys covered so much bio along the way. I think that's a great way to get more students involved with and excited about science. Of course when the new Resident Evil movie comes out in September I'm going to be focused on the biological implications of it all, rather than the kick-buttness that is Mila Jovovich. Thanks Zamis!

I've definitely considered that, but my boyfriend, my roommate and and an embarrassingly extensive number of my friends work at GS as well. I don't anticipate having that much time for gaming, but when I do - I'm sure Super GS Boyfriend will come to my gaming rescue!

I work in accounting at a casino here in Vegas. With the current economy our specific department is down to me and my supervisor. We have it pretty nice without all the drama and such and our hours are normal daytime 8-5. When I start grad school it will be a challenge, since I may have to split my shift or take vacation days until I can get full funding. The biggest bummer is that casinos never close, so holidays are out. But at least I get paid double time for official ones. Bring on school where I'll be able to celebrate with friends and family during my time off.

I taught English as a foreign language at a private school, with tutoring and translating on the side. I am not going to miss it, I hate teaching beginner English (I substituted at higher levels and that was much more fun).

Editor at PR Newswire, a financial news service firm. It's a pretty decent job to be honest. Overnight shift, four days a week, pay bonuses. I'm glad I'm leaving now, though. The work itself is undeniably monotonous, clients often involve big corporate names who are demanding and cranky, and it's just personally stultifying.

For the last 18 months (and most likely for the next two years) I've been an Administrative Assistant/Document Production Coordinator for a hydropower development company. By the end of the year I'll be dropping the first part of my job (Admin) and getting a big pay increase because we're one of the few industries that's seeing growth right now. My job is OK-- the work environment is relaxed and I can feel good about the work I'm doing, but I'm pretty disenchanted by my first "real" job after years and years of retail.

I am a current student....last year I taught middle school full-time and worked on my PhD part-time...now I am full-time PhD and part-time worker...of multiple jobs! I teach a course, facilitate a co-op preschool group, and work by contract for the state government.

I work with children with disabilities. I will miss it when I start grad school. This job is one where I really get the rewarding feeling of making a difference.

I work in IT Support at my undergrad institution. I am looking forward to the day that I can call tech support rather than being tech support.

I will say that my workplace motivation has dropped significantly since getting my first acceptance.

I work at a pre-school. I am lowest on the chain of command, it is not quite full time, and the pay is bad...but I love the kids and have a great time. This is my “year off” so I am glad to be having as much fun as possible at work. I’ll miss my kids if I do get into my PhD programme.

Technically, I am also still employed at as a museum tour guide, which sounds fun and more relevant to my field (history)- but I haven’t done a shift in months, which is great because the boss is insane and doesn’t care about history (to her, the museum is there to make money by hosting events) and I spend most of my time there cleaning, doing dishes, serving food and moving chairs/tables.
