xjtmhd Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 (edited) does anyone familiar with PSU's biostatistics PHD program in the medical school? There are few information I can get from the internet, and they haven't have any PhD graduate, so dose anyone knows the pros or cons of this program? Thank you very much!! On the plus side, Penn State is a good school and their statistics department is well-regarded so I could see them developing a solid biostat program down the road.
coffeealwaysblack Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 The biostats PhD in PSU is the first school I met that doesn't require a PS. That's a little strange.
coffeealwaysblack Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 anybody knows if PSU's biostats phd program is competitive or not? comparing to 15-20 ranked biostats programs. I wasn't able to find much related discussion.

I wasn't able to find much related discussion. I think the lack of discussion / information speaks for itself. It can't compare with the ranked biostats programs surely. Also, while PSU has a great stats department, it's housed back on the main campus in State College, nearly 2 hours away from Hershey. I doubt there's very strong ties between the two departments. I would advise you apply elsewhere. Why are you stuck on Penn State?

I was just wondering what if their program is a hidden gem.
Connor1314 Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 (edited) As I know, the new Biostatistics program of PSU is very good. 1.They only recruits 3-4 students per year, so the class size is very small which means you can get very good attention and communication from the professors. 2.They have plentiful of funding resources compared to PSU stats program or other biostatistics programs like UNC.You don't have to do TA assignment. 3.There are two distinguished professors( two big ones) in the program, while PSU stats has two as well. However, 4 students per year in biostats compared to 20 students per year in PSU stats program. Besides that, there are a few really good APs. 4. I know one of the graduates in this program, he got 7 job offers from top companies. And in his class one got assistant professor position. There is one student will graduate in 2017, and he probably will find another AP position. It is new and in hershey campus, that's the cons. But, I think it is a very good program now and will be better in future. I would definitely rank it as a top 15 biostatistics program.
