Is there anyone else still following this forum that has decided to take a "gap year"? Curious as to what you'll be doing in your off time and how you'll be trying to improve your stats! Or for those who didn't get in on your first try what did you do during those months off? I know what I have to essentially be doing during these off months but I want to make sure there aren't some things I'm missing or things I should be doing.

I applied to 8 for Fall 2016 admission and got rejected. I moved to Arizona after accepting a job as an SLP-A and applied to NYU's online program and start classes on Thursday. Shadow SLPs, work as an ABA therapist or an SLPA if your state will allow you to. Feel free to PM me if you have questions.

Did you have certification to be an SLPA prior to accepting the job in Arizona? or simply had your CDIS/COMD degree and applied? I am in California and it is pretty restrictive here.

I accepted the job and then applied for my SLPA license through Arizona. I was offered the job 3 weeks before I graduated with my COMD degree. You can email me (annemariesullivan@outlook.com) if you want/need more help.

Congratulations! Was your SLP experience the only thing that made a difference to your application? Do you think NYU was looking for SLP experience?

The SLP-A job was the only major difference on my resume and I was able to submit my Capstone paper that I completed in undergrad on post-extubation dysphagia, which I think helped too. I think NYU is more holistic than some off the other programs because my stats were low (3.4 cumulative gpa, 146 quant 152 verbal, 3.5 writing). I like NYU's application process because you work with an admissions counselor the whole time.

Yes, an admissions counselor has called me several times but I missed the deadline because I was intimidated by the GRE and did not have time to study. Will apply for next cycle if I can get a half decent GRE score. I live in NY.

Good luck! The GRE was terrifying for me too and I was kind of bummed with my stats. Let me know if I can help you at all!

If you have time take CBEST now if you are a CA resident and graduated. Its gonna help you and you can find a substitute teacher job which is always available. Once you get accepted in masters program you need to have CBEST so why not take now if you have time.

Hi Ashny,

If you are looking to prep for the gre I suggest using princeton review. They provide a full gre practice test complete with a graded writing section. In my opinion,  it was the same as the real one. The grade I got on the practice was the same on the real thing for the verbel and writing, because I didnt prepare afterwards.
