a fragrant plant Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 My friend has been offered an interview from Stanford. Also, I saw a posting on the result page about Yale interview. I did not hear from these two schools about the interview. Does this mean i am rejected? May I ask when did your friend receive the interview notification from Stanford?
Nina Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 (edited) ATTENTION EVERYONE: i just called Yale and they said, if you haven't received an interview offer yet, that means you're rejected. I am SO sad. Edited February 5, 2010 by Nina
Harry Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 A few things... The good news is that I spoke with an admissions coordinator at Berkeley today on the phone, who said that he had no idea about any short list and that someone must have misinterpreted that information because he would have been the one to compile that sort of data. He said no decisions of any kind have been made that he is aware of (and I think he would know). The best part was that he assumed I had heard the rumor off thegradcafe, and told me that I should take anything on the site (and I quote), "with a pound of salt." Talk about ironic. So bottom line: there's no reason to fear about not having heard from Berkeley. I feel the same way about Chicago and the FLAS e-mail. Though I got the e-mail myself, it's dated from December 29th- I highly doubt that in less than two weeks they already made any cuts, though that's just my opinion. I don't think it means anything. In terms of the admissions stats I heard about Chicago, an admissions officer there told me that over the phone when I called to asked a question about my app. That info also wasn't gained from any "first cut" e-mail, so nothing to worry about there. Just some advice to those who are waiting like myself- you'd be surprised at how willing admissions staff (not faculty) are willing to talk to you and can share info about dates or the selectionprocess. That doesn't mean you should bombard them, but none have had any problems answering my questions, even if they give a generic "by the end of February" response. Hope this helps. I checked with the guy at Berkeley, and he actually thinks this site is great, just that info posted here in the past has sometimes been wildly inaccurate. "No harm done" he said, but check it with the source before worrying about it.

Nina Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 May I ask when did your friend receive the interview notification from Stanford? this week.
applicator Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 By the way, I haven't heard yet either. Did the grad coordinator give you any info about when he expected the selection process to be over?
applyingwaitingstressing Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 ugh ya itd be nice to have a bit of a time frame for berkeley (that is the school you're talking about... right?) ... because they've got to be somewhat close... or at least, they've definitely started the process based on what the grad coordinator said. soooo... gah just hurry up! Did the grad coordinator give you any info about when he expected the selection process to be over?
gonenative Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Fridays are an administrative closure (furlough) day for the Berkeley anthro offices (including Ned, unless things have changed since fall, which is unlikely). So I guess it's going to be Monday before anything gets announced...
gonenative Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 ...or perhaps not - commiserations to the person who was just rejected, can you tell us if the PoI was specific that all decisions had been made?

I'm the one who posted the Washington acceptance. Haven't posted here before but I've been reading the forums and results for a couple of weeks. I'm not sure what other info would help; the e-mail didn't really say anything about whether they had decided all admissions or how many they were taking or anything like that. Let me know if you have more questions that I could help with though!
far_to_go Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 I just got accepted to UVa! Got an e-mail from the DGS today- I had a phone interview with her last week. Funding package includes TAship, tuition remittance, and 14k stipend. I'm going to their prospective students weekend on Feb 18-20. The e-mail said that there will be 8-10 prospective students at the weekend, so I'm guessing that that's about the cohort size that they're aiming for. Anyone else going? Would be fun to meet you there! Btw, the recent postings about Yale are getting me down. I'm excited about UVa, but Yale is really my #1. Bittersweetness...

marzipan Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 That's ok. Congratulations! Will you definitely be attending Washington? Who will be your advisor? I wish you the best of luck! Right now it's possible but not definite, for one thing I still have to wait to hear from some other schools. Actually the e-mail didn't specify an advisor so I don't know if they haven't assigned them yet or whether that will be in the actual letter when it comes. When I applied I said I was interested in Marcos Llobera's work on landscape archaeology. I hope you also hear some good news from them soon!
vanishingpoint Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Congratulations, far_to_go! You're one of the ones who I've been specifically rooting for. I don't know if Kath Weston's work is up your alley, but she is someone who it will be fun to get to know. I'm disappointed about Yale too, but trying to stay positive about the couple of acceptances that I've landed so far. I'm glad that UVA swooped you up, and I hope that there are other acceptances to follow. I just got accepted to UVa! Got an e-mail from the DGS today- I had a phone interview with her last week. Perhaps they transposed letters in our e-mail addresses? ... At least I won't have to learn how to accurately pronounce the nuances in Sivaramakrishman Vanishing, well done on both UT and - where?
hogmommy Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 I got my acceptance in the mail today (University of Arkansas, bioarch). I'm thrilled because it was the only school I applied to and I got Jerry Rose as my advisor, who is fantastic! Nothing about funding but it look likes, historically, that information doesn't come until March.

vanishingpoint Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 Texas and Minnesota, so far. And it's SivaramakrishNAN, you imperialist! Yes, tears about Yale. (Thanks for the note, Nina.) yourlocalsuperhero Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 ATTENTION EVERYONE: i just called Yale and they said, if you haven't received an interview offer yet, that means you're rejected. I am SO sad. Howdy yall - I just called Yale (and a few others) and dude said that the committee will meet at the end of the month and decide en masse at that time. He insisted that most/all of the (admissions) decisions have not been made. Maybe another fellow freak is willing to call to confirm either what Nina or I have heard? If so, be polite - and persistent Solidarity, vegancommies'r'us

If so, be polite - and persistent Solidarity, vegancommies'r'us so when i called last friday, the guy said, if you are not offered an interview "by now," it is "most likely" that you are rejected. I called again after reading your post, and this person said they require interviews for certain people who need additional infos from? I am confused. Does this mean that I still have hope for Y? The guy from friday sounded really sure though. Is Yale changing their words just to calm us down? I wonder..
Harry Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Did the grad coordinator give you any info about when he expected the selection process to be over? He just said they were hammering out the final details. I didn't feel like I should press for more. I could hear voices in the background so I just said thanks and that was it.
Ibn Anthropology Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 I just emailed Ned at Berkeley and he wrote back that the decisions are being finalized and they will start sending replies this/next week. I was feeling guilty mailing him - since am sure he is being bombarded with emails these days - but he replied immediately, like always! Good luck to you all (:
