Ibn Anthropology Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 Yup, Gigsed, I have applied to Rutgers as well. In fact from your list of schools, I have also applied to Boston and NYU. I didn't actually apply to UC Irvine because Irvine does not make much sense for my partner's future career. So I have had to hit the "big cities". Let me know if you have any other questions about Irvine -- especially when you plan your trip here or are making your final decision. I know that many people would have reservations about living in O.C. - I had huge issues when I was moving here from Phialdelphia -- but in only four months, the place has somwhat grown on me. And yes, the department is wonderful. They are known to hire the most promising young scholars so you would be working with people who are doing "cutting-edge" research in Anthropology. There is also the Center of Ethnography here that George Marcus runs. Of course, you have lots of really good schools in your list so the decision would have to be comparative. And yes, compared to UK and Europe, America will seem very cheap to you no matter where you go!

Ibn Anthropology Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 Excellent. This will sound a bit rude and nosey but what are your specific area interests? Just private messaged you. I'd rather bore one person with the details than all the people who are watching this topic (:
jigmenorbu Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 What's up with this anthro wait. Makes me wish I'd done sociology if only for the decision times on these apps.
lagringa Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 denim_pocket: Yes, I did. The results board makes it sound like sociology and history applicants received the same message. Gigsed: Yes, I think I'll try to make the trip out to Irvine, although I won't be traveling from anywhere near the distance that you will. My reservations about the program mostly revolve around whether or not I could see myself living in Orange County, California, and so I figure that it makes sense to go out there and see for myself. Would Irvine be one of your first choices? Hi UCIers, I also got into Irvine and I am super psyched, though I also have reservations about living in OC. I moved to San Diego last year to start a MA program at UC San Diego. It was really hard to get by without a car. I have one now and it has made a HUGE difference. The sun is nice, but I must admit I take it for granted. The beach is nice, but who has time? That said, I am hopeful about Irvine. Hopeful that it has some redeeming value (as I know it must). The OC is actually really diverse, with immigrants from all over the world. Each little town has a different feel. The migrant community I work with is close by, making it a good geographic choice. Still, I have trouble seeing myself in Irvine. I would love to hear what the rest of you have to say. I will be going up for the recruiting weekend. I hope to meet you all there
Abigail Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Anyone hear from MSU? Archaeology, but it comes under the Anthro umbrella there.
anthropo2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 has anyone heard news about UNC, Stanford and Berkeley (phd anthropo) ? many thanks!
a fragrant plant Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 has anyone heard news about UNC, Stanford and Berkeley (phd anthropo) ? many thanks! nothing from Stanford. For those who got an acceptance from UCI, do you think they've made their first around acceptance? I have not heard from them at all. Should I pressume that I am rejected or waitlisted?
papayadance Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 ok... I promised myself I wasn't going to do this but has anyone heard anything from Stanford yet? I read an earlier post that they are supposed to send out their decisions by the 15th, and have been checking my email constantly since. anyone? I didn't apply to Stanford, but my friend just got an acceptance into the PhD program last Thursday (via email). Looks like the decisions are out? Haven't heard anything from Berkeley...I think that's a bad sign
applyingwaitingstressing Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 any details on this Chicago acceptance?
sohbetocean Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Of course, zero details here. However, I'd be happy to receive some! C'mon, throw us a bone....Oh yeah, I almost forgot: congratulations!!!! :D
littlepeach09 Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 I didn't apply to Stanford, but my friend just got an acceptance into the PhD program last Thursday (via email). Looks like the decisions are out? Haven't heard anything from Berkeley...I think that's a bad sign thanks for the response! i called stanford this past friday, and they told me that they would most likely get all of the decisions out by today (via email for rejections, and email or regular mail for acceptances). i also applied to berkeley and have yet to hear any news... i think i remember reading somewhere that they are supposed to send the rest of their decisions out by the end of this week? can't say i'm too hopeful about them, though. best of luck to you!
Lilith Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 nothing from Stanford. For those who got an acceptance from UCI, do you think they've made their first around acceptance? I have not heard from them at all. Should I pressume that I am rejected or waitlisted? I emailed them and yes, they have made the first round acceptances. but they said they won't send out rejection until next month so technicially our applications still remain "active"

Lilith Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Is the "they" referred to Stanford or UCI? UCI, Sorry, I didn't see the Stanford question
littlepeach09 Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 just found out that UChicago has emailed out all of their acceptances and wait-list offers. if you haven't heard yet, it doesn't look too good. that includes me sorry to all fellow applicants!
Ibn Anthropology Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Does anyone know if Boston U has made all its offers already or have they just started?
Abigail Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 As for MSU they won't be sending out anything until after the 20th... too many faculty off campus to finalize decisions.
aboxofcarrots Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Does anyone know if Boston U has made all its offers already or have they just started? hi ibn...im not sure, but i did get an email from Mark informing me of the acceptance..n to wait for financial info...i'm guessing that they should be in the process of making decisions still? it is afterall pretty early for BU, last year they notified applicants around 20ish feb or so... good luck to you... by the way your nickname "ibn" is son in arabic right? are you working on islam as well? (you can pm me if you don't feel like replying here)
gonenative Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Could the successful international @ Berkeley post some stats? I'm guessing it's pretty unlikely there will be more acceptances, but after reading http://savageminds.org/2010/02/08/receivership-berkley-anthro-or-ddr/ I kinda mind less...
applyingwaitingstressing Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 i emailed and got my rejection (though im not intnl). he said they are slow on getting the rejections out bc theyre understaffed in the office. Could the successful international @ Berkeley post some stats? I'm guessing it's pretty unlikely there will be more acceptances, but after reading http://savageminds.o...-anthro-or-ddr/ I kinda mind less...

littlepeach09 Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 not me. sorry. i think i was lied to. it seems like this week is the week though. haha, no worries. they are mean. they told me that all decisions would be out by yesterday, so i was curious to know what was going on!
