Graduate Housing

Feeling stressed out about finding housing! Any advice for seeking out places to live in places we are totally unfamiliar with? Or finding roommates? I feel like it is so late in the game, and many people at these schools already have their housing situations figured out for the next school year.

You're not late at all. When I looked for places last summer in Chicago I thought I was so late. Turns out I wasn't. For example, if you want to move in for August, you'd want to start looking mid June and July (about a month and a half in advance is when people start posting). I found my apartment at the time through Zillow and Trulia. I would look up on Google the best neighborhoods in Chicago and based on that would search Zillow and Trulia within my price point. If you want to find roommates I know looking at the FB groups for your school is a great way to see if any of your future classmates need a roommate. Craiglist is always an option as well. Finally, if you go to your school's housing website they often post listings of open apartments and ppl looking for roommates! Best of luck!

I'm in the process of looking for a place, too. Prior to this, I moved a lot---every two years to be exact. What I'm currently doing right now is going on every apt search website, see what's available...if I like it, I go onto Google Earth to check out the exterior of the building and the surrounding neighborhood. I sometimes "drive" through the neighborhood by using google map satellite. Sounds extreme but it helps you visualize the place and the area it's in. Since I won't have to start graduate school till mid August, I won't be apt searching till June or July. Also! If your new school is in a college town, try apt searching in May/June and secure a place for September. Most college town's apt contracts runs exactly like the school year; September to September....and landlords already know who is moving out some time in April/May. It's also harder to find housing in college towns, start early!

Most apt complexes don't know who is moving out or what apt will be available until 30-60 days before. So with that, you won't know until June or July! Keep your eye out around that time.

I know that one of the schools I applied to, University of South Carolina, will send you information regarding where current grad students live, as well as information to try to find a roommate that is also beginning their program. I'm sure some other programs will do that too.

I think if you search for graduate housing you'll have an easier time finding apartments later in the year/over the summer.

Find a housing group for your campus in Facebook. I joined one and there are tons of people looking for new housemates for the oncoming year!

Does your school have an off campus student services page or graduate housing page on their website?  That's how I found my place

Find your FB group, and post in it! I'm sure there will be people also searching for roomies! That's how I found mine.
