MissRyan Posted February 17, 2010 Posted February 17, 2010 Is it risky to send your POI a friendly email inquiring about application updates? I assume this is not exactly appropriate, but I do not know for sure. Thanks!
Psych316 Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 I think it's fine as long as you don't send them multiple emails. I think it's safer to contact the secretary in that department.
socialpsych Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 People seem to do it and get away with it, but it seems to me to be kind of a pain for the POI. If they knew something, they most likely would have told you by now. They're busy and they don't like to keep applicants in the dark just for fun. So, I personally never felt comfortable doing it, but YMMV.
digits2006 Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Well maybe the POI knows that you have been rejected and the Graduate School hasn't told you yet. The POI could go ahead and let you know. I have not contacted POIs yet. I really want to though. It's very tempting.

I assume this is not exactly appropriate, but I do not know for sure. Thanks! Yeah, I wouldn't email POIs about stuff like that because you have no idea how busy they are. I had a phone interview at Temple (because I'm international) and my POI said that he wanted me to speak to other profs. 2 weeks later I sent a friendly reminder and he didn't reply. So it's been a month total of me waiting just for him to SET UP another phone interview. I was about to get really angry but then I remembered that they are in Philadelphia which was snowed in for like 10 days. They are probably so over their heads with work right now I'm probably the least of their worries. Only email if they are supposed to get back to you but didn't.

My POI responded informing me (in the nicest way possible) that I was not accepted. While devastated, I wonder how long I would have waited hadn't I asked.

I am trying to work up the guts to email them, but I don't want to say anything that could be interpreted rudely.

digits2006 Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 I PM'd u with the specs of my email. Hey if you don't mind, could you PM the same one to me also. I wonder if that will help me get the guts also.
MissRyan Posted February 18, 2010 Author Posted February 18, 2010 Hey if you don't mind, could you PM the same one to me also. I wonder if that will help me get the guts also. Basically I said: Dear So and So, My name is xyz and I am applying for your xyz program. We were in contact back in december regarding your research...etc. As decisions are beginning to come in, I am wondering if you could update me on any decisions you have made at this point. Thank u so much for your time...etc..

Thank u so much for your time...etc.. Argh, I think I'd rather not know for now. Let me get my first acceptance, then I'll email everyone else. I don't think I can handle anymore bad news, especially if it's self-inflicted.
digits2006 Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 A rejection would be a little nice right now because no one is communicating with me. I emailed two people at a school who have already accepted people. It has been a week now and they never responded to my email. I just wish they would message me back and say that I am denied.
jlloyd87 Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 I really really want to just send an email to the few school that just seem to be stalling the process, but I am just scared that if I did have some smidgen of hope at these schools then my bothering them would just erase all hope entirely. So I just anonymously call the grad secretaries. Remember: if they don't know my name they can't connect my pesky voice to my application!

I emailed my POI at UMASS and was told, very nicely, that I was rejected. It's OK though, I'd rather be not stressed!
