Question

Currently, I'm a Junior at Texas A&M-Commerce, and will be applying for graduate school in December 2018. I'm a psychology major with an overall GPA of 3.9 and a major GPA of 4.0, with experience in independent study, research, and data analysis. I expect to graduate summa cum laude and receive good letters of recommendation from the professors with whom I've conducted research. However, I doubt that I will be able to achieve a high or even average score on the GRE. On all of the practice tests I've taken so far, I've done well in the verbal and written areas (156-160 on the verbal, and 5.0 on the written), but I've performed poorly on all the quantitative sections, receiving scores that ranged from 120-110. I know that with time and practice, I can improve my quantitative scores, but I am still unsure about my chances of getting into UT Southwestern's Clinical Psychology PhD program. Do any of you think that I could have a chance of getting an interview, or do you think I have better chances applying elsewhere?

May I ask if you got in or received an interview? UT Southwestern is on my application list for Fall 2019 and I am in a similar situation as you. My qualifications other than my GRE are competitive I hope: 3.97 GPA with a 4.0 in both my majors, research assistant for a year, 2 years of independent research and data analysis, statistics and psychology tutor, excellent letters of recommendation, a year of clinical experience, 3 conference presentations, and I graduated magna cum laude with University honors; however, I'm concerned the GRE (the quant specifically) will be my downfall. I panicked and it showed in my scores: 160V, 147Q, and 5.0 AWA. Being that you were in a similar situation as me it seems, I'm wondering if you'll have any advice on this. Please feel free to pm me if you don't want to share on the public forum and thank you in advance if you see this!

Hi, Katie. I haven't applied to UT Southwestern yet, but I have applied to some programs. I have pretty much the same experience as you, but my GRE was meh: 159V, 140Q, and 5.0 AWA. I was rejected from UTD's Communication Disorders MS program, but I was applying out-of-field and they like to weed people out with the GRE. I was accepted into a general psychology master's program for the Spring and I applied to UNT Clinical Psychology program in the Fall. I have no idea if I'll be able to overcome my crap GRE scores, though. It's kind of a bummer that we've both worked so hard in our field, but one test is threatening to overshadow all of that!
