herakles1 Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 in at b.u. :| safety sku. funding will determine that, though... <===too many smilies? lxs, your combined score is 1300...this is the median for most schools. fret not. the gre is less important than your work experience for sure!
halifax Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 Thanks, guys, for all your well wishes! I am very excited. lxs: your work experience and conferences/journals will be very enticing to any committee I'll keep my fingers crossed for everyone!
lxs Posted February 21, 2008 Author Posted February 21, 2008 thanks, you guys are a great support group! and congrats, herakles!
arthistorian Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 i've been checking the results board and it seems to me that art history departments are the slowest to respond compared to any other disciplines!
blueskies Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Well I was rejected to Cornell today (no surprises!) and wait listed at Rochester for Visual Cultural Studies. At least it is my first non-rejection. Ont he plus side, I got a promotion at the Gallery where I work. Congrats Halifax, by the way. That is awesome.
arthistorian Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 sorry to hear that blueskies.. but congrats on the promotion :-)
halifax Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Thanks Mew and Blueskies! Yes I'm very excited about the Fall now.......I just realized how lucky I am that my first (and only, so far,) school was an acceptance......who knows, the rest could all be rejections but I wouldn't even care!! If it had been the reverse, I would be dying right now Good luck on the rest of your apps blueskies and congrats on the promotion!! Very cool
arthistorian Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 update on columbia apparently a friend of a friend got a call from a professor at columbia a few days ago. he knows the professor personally. so i think decisions or at least some decisions have been made. we should be hearing back soon.... i'm thinking next week or maybe the first week of march.
emusinfrance Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 Well, I got my (first) rejection letter from Cornell today. It sort of bugs me that it says "thank you for your interest in our field," as if we are not already somewhat "in the field." Oh wait... I just remembered that at Cornell, departments are called "fields." At any rate, it reads rather strangely. *tears*
lxs Posted February 23, 2008 Author Posted February 23, 2008 arthistorian - was it an acceptance call? i checked late last week and the dept. said no decisions would be made for about two weeks ?!
arthistorian Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 arthistorian - was it an acceptance call? i checked late last week and the dept. said no decisions would be made for about two weeks ?! yeah.. he got in. he's supposed to be the prof's star candidate or something.... i haven't heard anything at all from them.. haha
lxs Posted February 23, 2008 Author Posted February 23, 2008 me neither could you let me know (pm me if you want) what field/prof it was? hope it wasn't the one i applied to work with.
arthistorian Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 seems like every program in the whole world is notifying... except art history! :x
NO8DO Posted February 25, 2008 Posted February 25, 2008 It's okay, us Spanish/Portuguese/Romance Language people are basically in the dark still too aside from the few French notifications that have already gone out. I still haven't heard from UDel's Art History dept. yet but I'm guessing I won't until mid-March at the earliest since their spring semester only just started a couple of weeks ago. The waiting is really killing me.
Chicken Dan Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 All right, kids. Who got into Harvard? Spill it!
hardkore Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Hey everyone. I applied to 4 PhD programs in Art History and one MA program in Visual Culture. I've also applied to two MFA programs in creative nonfiction writing. My educational goals are very much geared towards writing primary essays and the like. I have applied to these programs with a BA degree in Art History. My speciality is and will be art from the 1960s on- especially contemporary art and digital media. I applied to Columbia University, Yale University, Stanford University, UC Berkeley for their PhD programs. I applied to NYU for their Visual Culture MA. My first choice is a three way tie between Berkeley-Yale-Stanford. I took some undergraduate courses at Columbia and their modern department isn't as strong as the other three. I have (in my opinon) a strong GPA, intimately drawn recommendations from professors, a ton of unpaid work related experience in galleries, museums, art studios etc, a strong writing sample and mediocre GREs. I will update you as things progress- I am mentally prepared to not get into any of the schools, but I wouldnt want to live anywhere else than NYC (where I live now) if I dont get into any of these schools, and besides, why go to a program for 7 years just because it was a safety and the town has nothing to offer. People do this out of pride. If all else fails, I believe I am an extremely strong candidate for the NYU MA degree.
theboojum Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Look, we've got a Yale acceptance too! Looks like things are finally starting to pick up. Another Austin rejection, and still no word for me. I'm in agony, here.

Have you heard anything back? Why did you only apply for the MA? The NYU program is my top choice and I have a similar sounding resume as you (tons of work experience, strong relationships with my professors, mediocre GRE scores, etc.) Good luck!!!

I applied to the MA because the program is not sequential- IE, you need a master's already before applying to the PhD program. This is not explicitly said on the website and I emailed the Department Chair Mirzoeff to confirm back in November. If I do get in, I will apply to the PhD, unless my mind changes.
theboojum Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Same here.......have only heard from Cornell...waiting on Yale, UT, UPenn, Brown........... Check your status page, mine just got updated and I'm in!! I'm going to wait to "officially" report it here until someone from the program emails me.

I'm going to wait to "officially" report it here until someone from the program emails me. Congrats!!! Are you just too excited? I'm sure a celebration is in order for you and yours. Mine is still not showing anything. Do they add an extra link or something saying Admission Decision?

Do they add an extra link or something saying Admission Decision? Thanks! I'm sooo happy. It's my top school. Now of course the question is funding, but it feels so good to know that at least I got in. They changed the first line from something about how they had all my credentials to a congrats message. I almost didn't see it at first 'cause it's not in a different font or color or anything.
Chicken Dan Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 That Yale post was mine. I got the call last night...
