Karasu56 Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 Should I explain average GRE, or why my average GRE maths scores are not indicative of my mathematical ability? Also would tutoring experience be something to include? Applying for PhD in Electrical Engineering for reference.
Halek Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 I'm not sure about the GRE scores. I'm applying for an Ecology PhD and I'm mentioning tutoring experience, but many of the schools I'm applying to ask specifically about teaching experience/outreach.
Karasu56 Posted November 16, 2017 Author Posted November 16, 2017 Thanks for the reply! I have decided to include my tutoring experience as I think it shows my desire for a career in academia.

Be mindful of an unfortunate fact of the Ivory Tower -- many academics are disdainful of those who aspire to teach. Even if your potential advisors have won teaching awards, others sitting on admissions committees may want graduate students who are focused on research.
Karasu56 Posted November 16, 2017 Author Posted November 16, 2017 Sigaba, I see how this can be problematic, the statement I put about tutoring in my SOP is very small when compared to my focus on research. Thanks for pointing that out!
