@Monsieur Vénus Sorry about the rejection. But you have a lot of other great choices. Did you end up going to Boston's recruitment day? How was that?

@awhiterussian that might actually be good news for you if you still haven't received a rejection from Duke!

@HomewardBound You're right, I'm very happy with my options! I wasn't able to make it to Boston's recruitment day (they scheduled it for the same day as my only two midterms of the semester, womp womp), but the graduate assistant was very accommodating and scheduled a private visit for me a little later this month! I'm excited to get a feel for their program in general, but I'm ESPECIALLY excited to sit in on Dorothy Kelly's seminar on gender and sexuality in 19th century literature.

@everyone my visit to UMich is coming up this weekend and both my excitement and anxiety levels are skyrocketing every day. Is there anything I should absolutely remember to bring? Should I bring copies of my CV or is that a silly idea my nervous brain has made up?

@Monsieur Vénus Enjoy! I'll be visiting on Monday. Very excited! As far as what to bring, I've brought a notebook and pen to all of my visits thus far. Nothing else has been needed.

I wouldn't sweat about it too much! Bask in it! Post-admissions visits are meant to be super fun, and they'll spend the entire time trying to woo you into their program. Relax, enjoy yourself, and let them tell you about their resources/give you tours/feed you (I was just at a visit and I'm still full, haha!) No need to impress anybody if you're already in ;) However, do prepare to talk about your basic research interests a few hundred times.

Hi everybody! Back from Stanford and it was fantastic. It was only 4 of us and they tell me they only accept 2 or 3 people, so I'm not overly optimistic (the other candidates seemed very high caliber, applying to Ivies mostly). (Impostor syndrome kicking in already!)

I met lots of cool people though. Sadly they don't have a Francophonist among the faculty :( And Palo Alto seemed like a very small town, I thought it would be closer to SF. Oh well, beautiful campus in any case!

@Monsieur Vénus Enjoy your visit to Michigan!! At Stanford I met an applicant who is also going to visit there! His name starts with J and he is Swiss and he's doing some fascinating work on Middle Ages lit.

Everybody seems to like French here. I'm at the Italian Studies dpt and we're basically the same thing, so I thought I could find a friend. No, quick question. I got accepted at Brown but don't have the means to visit the school. Is it safe to assume it'll be crazy and I'll love it? Anybody going to Brown around here?

Can you shoot me the name in a pm? I'm Swiss too and with the few universities we have here - of which only two or three make sense to me - I might even know the person.

@Carly Rae Jepsen I met an alum from Stanford who interviewed for a position at my school, and she said they used to have a Francophone studies specialist who retired midway through her progress towards the dissertation. Stanford has not hired anyone new, which is of course in line with the neoliberal order of academia today...

Yes, a 5th year student told me they had been "looking" to hire a Francophonist the last 2 years but hadn't done so for some reason. The chair mentioned they wanted to hire someone next year but given what the student told me, I don't know if they'll actually do. Strange for sure when so many people are always looking for jobs  Then again I guess Francophone Studies is only getting more popular now, who knows...

Anyone knows if Rutgers has a handbook or something for graduate students? I’m trying to figure out technicalities about payment, how the stipend is received etc., and it seems my quick research hasn’t provided any help. Thanks!

Hi y'all! I have had my interview with Austin and it went well I think. I was a bit taken aback by the fact that they teach their classes in English. Am I the only one that it surprises? Do you guys know if LSU teaches also in English? My Bachelor and Master's were all taught in French only. Still waiting to hear from Tulane and Miami.

It seems to be quite common for classes to be taught in English—when I went to UVA, it was maybe half French, half English, and at Cornell, the course was cross-listed so it was entirely in English. I’m sure there are classes taught entirely in  French, though, what class(es) did you sit in on?

There are some cross-listed courses at LSU that are in English but the majority of classes are completely in French.

I would ask a current student. They haven't got back to me about funding, I sent an email to ask.

Regarding stipend amounts? I heard back Tuesday. But didn’t want to ask too many questions before I was sure there wasn’t info online haha. Yeah I need to get in touch with people, I have a lot of questions and thoughts that need input.

Yep, I haven't heard anything at all other than I was accepted. A professor told me it would take a couple weeks at least.

It's odd because he mentioned i should notify them of my decision as soon as possible because of people in the wait-list, but also I have no info about the stipend package and haven't talked much with people in the program, so I don't feel like I can make the decision soon

Hopefully Stanford will make the decision for you ;)

Thank you!

I am starting to think it'll be between WashU and them (if they take me.) I'll wait for the Indiana visit, too.

The stipend at UNC was low and Rutgers and Pittsburgh haven't said anything about funding yet.

Well if you want details shoot me a pm. Prof. Alan Williams answers quickly to my inquiries, if that can help as well.

Has anyone at all heard back from Penn State? It’s been 6 weeks since my interview now, and they never responded to my email. I just want a yes or no at this point...

I think it's safe to say you can call them and ask.

@Saltshaker Six weeks?! In terms of hearing from them, I've heard from them quite a lot...I'm leaving tomorrow for my visit (unless my flight gets cancelled, like the one to Boston did). Who have you been contacting?

I’ve just been emailing the graduate assistant...? Though tbh I haven’t been trying that hard, I kind of assumed if I haven’t heard back from them at this point, it’s a no. And if you’re flying out today, I suppose that confirms my suspicions. I’m not annoyed or anything, I’ve simply found the radio silence bewildering.
