sarah4153 Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Hi all, I was under the impression that it was only science programs who conducted interviews as part of their graduate application process. I've seen several posters on the results page who are receiving interviews for humanities or social science programs. Is this common? Of course, I'm wondering if the programs I've applied to do interviews! Thanks!
rafnow Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 At least two of the schools I applied to conduct interviews in my area (religion). Not sure about other areas.
sarah4153 Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 It is nice to see someone on here waiting to hear from Religious Studies departments. It's a definite minority field...
rafnow Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Good luck. Post when you hear something. (Trying to remember to breathe...)
sarah4153 Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 Definitely! Good luck. Maybe we'll both hear something soon... Yikes!
dubizzle Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 journalism too does interviews. though don't know how many get in after interviews ... anyone in my position?
deadparrot Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 I'm applying for museum studies, and I just got an e-mail requesting a phone interview. It's not my top program, but I know my top two programs also hold interview weekends.
school_psych_hopeful Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 All the school psychology programs I have applied to conduct interviews.
dmh26 Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Hey there, I applied to five history phd programs, and was not expecting to have an interview, but one school emailed me to set up a very casual phone interview. I stated that I thought it was unusual, and she said that not many history programs do these. However, they recently restructured their department and they wanted to get to know their more promising applicants. I was super excited! I think it just depends on your program and school.
jaw17 Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 dmh26: Which history program is offering the interviews? I'm biting my nails to hear back from my husband's schools (9 programs, focusing on Central Asia history), and would be very interested to know if he's already been ruled out at one of them... I think I may care more than he does, if that's possible.
Canadianpolsci Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 For you religion program applicants, here's a tip: If you want to ensure you know exactly why you were rejected, that's easy: all you have to do is apply and say you want to study the religious concept of Karma. And if you don't get in: well you'll know why. You're an expert in that area, after all!
KUNRD07 Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Does anyone know of any other good grad school forums out there?
sjj20081 Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 I've got an interview with WashU's chemistry department this coming Tuesday. I'm both excited and smidge nervous, but I think that it'll be good interview practice no matter the outcome. The invitation came as a surprise because, although I have a good GPA, great LORs.
sarah4153 Posted February 7, 2008 Author Posted February 7, 2008 OK, so many people have heard from UCSB and UM this week that I keep telling myself I must hear from them soon!
adstatus Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 What if you never get asked for an interview? Does that mean you're totally out, or that the PhD committee has made a decision, positive or negative, based just on your application, letters of recommendation etc? I can't get anything out of my contacts I have at the university. I might mention that I'm currently on the faculty of the university I applied to, but in a different department. I had excellent letters of recommendation from my department head, from a very well respected and nationally recognized professor in my department and from a recently tenured member of the program I applied to. I also have a very solid record of success from the Masters program I completed at the same university three years ago. Am I just paranoid, should I chill or should I consider enrolling in truck driving school? Thanks for your input.
