  1. Can anybody tell me that is it possible to take the coms exam in the same semester as you are taking a seminar course, I mean is the workload manageable? I'm in humanities and I have to read 40 sources and answer two questions either in one paper or in two separate ones. That seems a lot but I was wondering if anyone else has done the coms while taking a seminar course for which you have to write a 20-page paper.
  2. I come from a field in humanities/social sciences. I plan to attend 2-3 conferences this year, if more than that, I might not be able get travel grants. I was wondering what other PhD students think when it comes to deciding how many conferences to attend in a year? Of course, it depends on having the time to prepare the papers, the generosity of the travel fund in your program and probably the disciplinary culture. My advisor once said, instead of too much conferencing, grad students should try to to work harder on their publications. But he said 2-3 conferences a year is not too much. What do you guys think? ....by the way, have you ever went to a conference on your own money?
  3. I also got a Vanier SSHRC. This morning I checked the result on the website and one hour later or so I received the email.
  4. I'm waiting too, with very little hope. Good luck everyone!
  5. I don't know about other places, but in England, for Masters' degree, they have 'research program' and 'taught program.' For the former, in addition to some courses, you also have to write a 12000 word thesis but for the latter you just take courses and there is no thesis involved. This is what I remember from 2008 when I was considering to apply to Goldsmith in London.
  6. In my program, the courses offered for the winter term are not in the area of my interest, except for one. In other departments too, believe it or not, I couldn't find seminar courses that I was looking for. However, there are reading courses offered by my program (that apparently you can choose their subjects). But I have no idea if they are better or worse than seminar courses and how productive they are? Apart from their usefulness, don't they look bad on your transcript, especially if they are more than one? Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.
  7. I got admitted off the waiting list. So don't lose hope, I'm the living proof that there are some good chances to get the good news one day.
  8. I applied to six schools for PhD,of them, U of T and Carleton rejected me, Calgary and McGill accepted me and I havn't heard from Ottawa and York yet. I am not waiting for the last two, as I have already confirmed McGill's offer which was my first choice. With getting into McGill my dream came true, and I wish everybody else best of luck with their applications!
  9. I was in a Second Cup (Canadians know what it is) drinking coffee with three other friends. As an habit, I was refreshing my inbox every now and then. Suddenly, there it was! an email from my second choice school. I was so excited, but soon I thought it might be a rejection. I gave the computer to my friend to open the email and tell me the news. I was reading the reactions on his face, but he kept a straight face until he was done reading the entire letter, I was freaking out. And finally, he looked up with a big smile, "acceptance with full funding my friend!"
  10. Got an offer from U Calgary today, but they want me to accept or decline it in 10 days (March 31). I haven't heard from other schools yet, in particular from my top choice where I am on the waiting list. What should I do now? Is it rude to put deadlines for other schools to announce my aplication result?
  11. I am on the waiting list of McGill's Communication program. What should I do now? contact them to express my interest and blah blah...?! or just wait?
  12. My user name is a shortened version of "Why the fuck should I apply to PhD?"
  13. I want to be a university professor, so getting a PhD is important to get there. I hate to have any other kind of job, except for gynecologist!
  14. Based on the result page, the programs I've applied to in McGill and Carleton have sent acceptance offers to people, but I haven't heard anything yet. Am I being rejected?
  15. I've lost my hope, already working on a plan B!
