  1. oh really? weird. i hadn't heard about that.
  2. I've heard of people declining their second CGS-M so they would be eligible for the 3 year CGS-D. seems sorta risky though.
  3. i hope i get the thing
  4. okay yeah it showed up today. i guess one package comes from the faculty of graduate studies and one from the psychology department
  5. did anyone that was accepted to York get their funding info in a separate envelope from their letter of acceptance? i received a package today that was a letter of acceptance, a page with student number type info on it, and a little glossy "welcome to York" thingy but nothing about funding. My POI already told me about funding so i'm not in the dark or anything, it would just be nice to have the numbers on something official. should i expect it soon, or should I have received it in this package?
  6. qualifying year maybe?
  7. another spam email from Ross University School of Medicine asking me to apply. quit being so aggressive Ross University School of Medicine, I already told you my heart belongs to Rachel University School of Medicine. yeah i went there.
  8. I think AW is thought of as less important because your strength as a writer can be assessed pretty well from your statement of purpose. I've heard that people will often write a bad AW off as a fluke if your SOP is well written.
  9. yeah.
  10. Meant to mention this as well. There's a pretty famous paper about the "kisses of death" for psychology grad school applicants and this is actually one of the first things it talks about. edit: this sucker http://psychology.unl.edu/psichi/Graduate_School_Application_Kisses_of_Death.pdf
  11. you should apply. schools usually look at GPA in 3 ways: overall, psych, and last 2 years. the overall is the only one that hurts at all and a 3.5 certainly isn't bad. the amount of research and conference presentations you have is far and above what is expected so you're actually probably a pretty competitive candidate.
  12. Does anyone else's UBC "submitted applications" page not actually show a status when you click the status button? Mine just says like student number, name, birthdate etc. and the status of letters of reference. I'm pretty sure it's looked like this since I first submitted.
  13. hahaha i just like the phonaesthetics of the phrase. rolls off the tongue.
  14. i'm losing my damn mind
  15. due December 15th and I believe I got my email on Feb 28th
  16. My Manitoba app also looks like that and I've received my official acceptance (i'm not in either of y'all's field though). seems like checking the page is not gonna be your first tip off so it'd be best to just check your email 30 times a day.
  17. I only used Barron's and wasn't surprised by anything on the actual test (I actually ended up writing 170 which I didn't do on any of my practice tests)
  18. I'm sorta iffy on this too. On one hand the York Village area seems pretty nice and affordable, but it's pretty far from everything most of the city (15 minute bus ride with no stops other than the university and the northernmost station on the yellow line, and I can't imagine that bus runs 24/7). So I can imagine getting home late at night might become a bit of a chore. Day commutes are a nice time to get some work done anyway
  19. I used the Barron's GRE course to prepare and nothing else besides the ETS Powerprep, Painless GRE app for Android (shout out to Philip Nguyen, i'll remember the word "aberrant" for the rest of my life), and Google and came out with 90th percentiles across the board. Also when I did it Barron's was like 60 bucks compared to Kaplan's 500 (i think it's up to 100 now but that's still a way better deal). I ran into a dude from my lab on the day of the test who had spent 4 months with Kaplan vs my month with Barron's and I think we both performed pretty similarly compared to our initial diagnostics (like +6 points between V and Q). So yeah basically what I'm getting at is I think a lot of these courses are a bit overkill. One cute thing about Barron's (that the other courses may do too, i'm not certain) is it pretty explicitly says "a lot of these standardized tests aren't really that great at measuring how smart you are, but how good you are at taking that particular test, so we're gonna teach how to take the GRE". like it teaches you about the "kinds of wrong answers" that ETS likes to use that you'll come across in verbal, as well as strategies for narrowing down your quant answers. Barron's if you're reading this and wanna talk sponsorship, get at me in PM
  20. that's fair. good luck with the interview!
  21. the thing earlier this month was actually a "recruitment weekend". i'm told that if you got invited to that you're basically in. you still meet your prospective supervisor to assess whether or not you're a good fit but you probably aren't actually competing with anyone. you missed out not attending recruitment weekend though. lots of free food and beer haha. and i guess getting to meet the rest of the incoming cohort was cool too who is your POI anyway? i met a few of the dev folks and they all seem super nice! (PM if you don't wanna post it in here)
  22. :| i interviewed at UBC like 3 weeks ago and figured i'd hear back soon. youre telling me it could be another month??!
  23. i don't really know anything about CGU but they keep sending me emails asking me to apply (like 4 in the last month). something about that sorta weirds me out. as i recall, they seem to be more of a professional school than a research school (which explains the subpar funding) so if you wanna stay in academia it may not be the best path.
  24. Whoa! What a list! Congrats! Just got my first official acceptance from YorkU! very happy about that. Presumably rejected by McGill, but I'm not devastated because that application package was rushed and, honestly, sorta sucked
