  1. Oh, ok thanks. My latest status description still says "Your application has been received and will be reviewed by your program. Please refer to this page for updates."
  2. Me too. I probably shouldn't have bought that Wisconsin sweatshirt last fall and picked out the neighborhood in Madison where I wanted to live. Oops!
  3. Everyone above makes excellent points. I spent months researching programs to find the ones that were the best fit. There were a few schools that I would have really loved to go to but they just didn't have the research match.
  4. GradCafe really needs a phone app that sends push notifications for the results board based on keywords.
  5. I'd imagine there's a ways to go. Last year's results indicate that's the case, at least.
  6. Anyone have a general idea about the typical cohort demographic - maybe someone who is already attending? Am I going to be the "old guy" if I'm entering at 27?
  7. For those of you waiting on UNC -- I checked the link referenced above again and it was indeed updated with my decision information now (it wasn't when I had posted that). So, it's probably worth registering and checking that too. It's a little odd that there are two separate login locations but I thought I'd let you all know in case compulsively checking one UNC site wasn't enough for you
  8. Sorry to hear about your employment difficulties. I was unemployed for four months in 2011 and it was a very difficult period for me. Hang in there. I hope everything works out for you soon.
  9. Nice!!!! That's awesome, I'm glad you got some good news! Now go celebrate after class! (I'd give you a +1 but I've reached my daily quota.)
  10. Maybe the rest of the week will be pretty quiet if most of the excitement is out of the way after yesterday. I've noticed that Michigan is one of the few schools that releases acceptances and rejections all at once so that may make a mess all over the results board in a just few days.
  11. Wow. Beautifully put, everybody. My undergrad advisor is the one who first encouraged me to pursue a PhD during my senior year, 5 years ago. I spent the subsequent time in the working world with a lot of ups, wonderful learning experiences, but also a great number of disappointments. The romantic career path I had envisioned ultimately led to a desk job in a bureaucracy where I stare at the clock and dream of packing up my life and head off to grad school. It has no meaning for me and the thought of spending the rest of my life doing this scared the hell out of me, which is when I became serious about applying. Not everyone will end up getting tenure at Stanford, and that's ok. I've experienced a lot of harsh realities in my professional career and am probably better suited to understand that now as opposed to if I came straight out of undergrad. But the lifestyle of being a professor, coupled with meaningful and intellectually satisfying work, means that I can spend my life doing something I love. When you look around, that's a pretty rare thing. So when I e-mailed my undergrad advisor 18 months ago to tell him that the time had come and I'd be applying for Fall 2013, the last thing I expected him to respond with was a long, passionate plea to not pursue a career in academics due to the job market and declining financial state of higher education. I appreciate that he shared this with me because it's important to be fully informed before diving into an endeavor like this. But there is nothing else I'd rather be doing and so I decided it was worth the time, energy, and risk to work hard and try with everything I've got to make it happen. So despite his urging, I have spent the past year and a half working towards this dream and could not possibly be more excited that it has become a reality for me. I hope the same happens for everybody else in the coming days and weeks. Good luck all!
  12. Well put, Chaetzli. It's pretty clear that some people on that site feel the need to tear other people down to make themselves feel better about their own shortcomings. Investing hundreds of hours over the past year and nearly $1500 with GRE costs with the hope of convincing schools with a 2% to 10% acceptance rate to pay you while receiving your free $200,000 education is a very taxing process emotionally, physically, and financially. It's a big deal. These guys know this and were the in the same position just a few years ago, but enjoy the reaction it creates when they say things like that.
  13. I wouldn't lose heart yet, sm321. Last year's results show one UNC acceptance posted in late January, several all at once on Feb 9, then a few more staggered during the week the followed that. It seems too early to start worrying just yet since no other UNCs have been posted.
  14. Someone earlier said that it was still on pending.
  15. I'm hoping that the mailman is late today instead of the possibility that I got no mail. I broke about 17 traffic laws racing home at lunch.

  17. Awesome! I'm glad this year worked out for you. Congratulations!
  18. Congrats! I'm anxious to run home in about an hour.
  19. Off topic, but does anybody else ever read PSJR for entertainment value? http://www.poliscijobrumors.com/topic.php?id=86206 (I'm hoping there isn't something about earning a PhD that inherently makes you as charming as some of these people)
  20. Since Wisconsin parties like it's 1996, I'm not going to be able to focus at work until I sneak home around 2:00 to check my mail.
  21. Congrats to the new Illinois up too. This is going to be an intense week!
  22. Yes, congrats everyone! Madison looks gorgeous right on the lake there and they have an excellent program. I was wondering the same about the site, mine says pending so I was wondering if that was bad.
