UW is an excellent school, certainly the best university in the Pacific Northwest. I love Seattle, it's an incredible city. Whereas Portland feels like a large town in a lot of ways, Seattle really feels like a true city, if that makes sense. Regardless of the weather, I'd have applied if the research fit was there. Many people in the Northwest swear they'll never leave the because they love the geographic diversity (mountains, forests, beaches, desert all within an hour or two... and Canada) and the beautiful green scenery that the (constant) rain provides. Northwest summers are amazing, although short. No humidity and gorgeous 80s and 90s through July and August, although it will still rain a decent amount during June, especially as far north as Seattle.

How Rude! (or, when grad programs suck at wooing)
Quigley replied to sr0304's topic in Waiting it Out
I agree with woosah's take on it. I wouldn't take it as an insult - they don't know much about you except what's on paper and the interview allows them an opportunity to get a better idea of who you are, your motivations, goals, etc. Sounds like you handled it well. -
I'm dreading the thought of enduring another weekend without any news. Ugh.

Very well said, thanks for that great reminder. It's been an exhausting year for all us, I'm sure. When I think back 12 months to when I still had about 25 schools on my "short list" and I was carrying around GRE vocab cards in my pocket everywhere I went, it's amazing to think of the incredible amounts of time and effort that went into this process. We will all feel great when (hopefully) all of this hard work pays off and acceptances are received. Personally, none of my programs have started announcing decisions so I am still feeling some pretty intense anxiety and moments of self-doubt, but I am sincerely happy for everyone who has received good news so far and am doing my best to think positive. After taking the GREs twice and spending months writing SOPs, filling out forms, cleaning up writing samples, etc, I felt this huge sense of relief when I hit the button on my final application and the work was done. Throughout this process, however, I never imagined that the most emotionally and physically taxing period of this endeavor would actually be these final weeks during the waiting period when everything is out of our hands and all we have left to do is cross days off the calendar and try not to drive our friends and family crazy with our increasingly neurotic behavior. What do you plan to do to reward yourself/celebrate, radiomars? I haven't decided what to do for myself yet, I guess because I don't want to get carried away and put the cart before the horse. Congrats on your acceptance!

For anyone waiting to hear from Wisconsin, I noticed the following on their status check site for the first time today, which means that after logging in several times already today, I can chill out until tomorrow morning. Every reasonable effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this information. The information provided is not a contract or offer to contract. The program may have made a recommendation or decision that has not yet been reported to the Graduate School. Due to varying program deadlines, processing of your materials/checklist items will also vary. Please allow 14 days for your program to check off receipt of materials. We update the status check at 7:00 a.m. each work day.

Absolutely! I promised my friends and family that I'd stop acting like a crazy person when/if I have a single acceptance and would be ecstatic to attend any of the programs I've applied to. I hope we all get good news soon.

Thanks for sharing this! None of my schools have shown up on the results board yet, but it's strange to realize that in many cases it has already been determined if we are in or out and we are just waiting to get the news at this point. Good to know. Do you remember how long it took for the e-mail to come after you saw the notice on Wisconsin's site last year? They notified on the 24th last year (today).

Wow that's great, good luck EW33!

I believe it was Ohio State. Oh... now I realize that I think you were talking about RWBG's acceptance from last year. Oops.

PS... I put the laptop away and turned the phone off and got an interrupted 8 hours sleep for the first time in a while. No good news this morning, but finding that out at 6:45 was just as effective as finding out at 4:10, 5:25, 6:05. Go figure.

Nice... congrats on two getting into two great programs this week! Good luck everyone!

Agreed. 2012 and 2011 were both very difficult years for me (unrelated to grad school). Here's to hoping that 2013 will be good to all of us. Good luck everyone!

That and so much more - I don't know how I would have made it through this whole process without this site. I don't have any friends who have ever pursued a PhD, so I have found the advice, information sharing, empathy, and support on this site to be invaluable. If there were a place to donate funds to the operation of this site, I absolutely would.

Wisconsin and UC Davis look like they could be any day now, maybe UCLA and Michigan around the end of next week?
