. . .Or, if possible scope out the place first yourself and seek out opinions from more than one individual who has lived there.

Just remember guys, there's hope for us all! I've been planning what to do with my gap year, since I assumed my first 2 rejections were a sign of things to come. But look at me now! Planning my trip to New York City!

I'm just really happy right now. Even though this isn't an acceptance, I feel so very accepted at the moment.

Conscia Fati reacted to DontHate in Bah. Any medievalists or people who know things about medieval lit out there? Help.
Don't take this the wrong way, but aren't you in grad school already? Why don't you ask one of your professors, or someone else in your program, or even a librarian? Seems a more effective strategy than grad cafe.

Nope, I meant placenta - that's with a hard C! Click the link rsmease pasted and you'll find a blog with ancient recipes. Placenta is a sort of dessert! Quite good - layers of dough, ricotta, and honey.

Thanks for the link! As a Canadian myself I see where the CAC is coming from when they say they don't like the idea of CANA.

I personally like American Classical Association but I know that will indeed be confusing between ACA and ACL. Maybe something that starts with Society or Institute is best.

To be perfectly honest I actually see the whole thing as unnecessary but I do understand their reasons behind the decision.

Conscia Fati reacted to non humilis mulier in Pregnant during grad school?
I can't speak to pregnancy in graduate school, but I can as an undergraduate. Last year I was a full time undergraduate student, writing an honors thesis, pregnant. It was doable, but very difficult. My pregnancy was for the most part, complication free. I was very tired, and my husband was EXTREMELY supportive, covering meals, grocery shopping, budgeting, etc., so that I could rest and do my homework. I also had a very supportive thesis advisor, who had three children while she was in graduate school. She extended lots of grace to me and offered lots of support, which also got me through. It was tough, but I would do it again. If I hadn't have had such a wonderful husband and advisors, I don't think I could have managed it. And of course, a graduate program would be more rigorous than undergraduate courses, I'd imagine. I wish you blessings and health in whatever you and your husband decide. Babies are so wonderful! I wouldn't have it any other way. My LO is my study buddy. : )

Hi, I'm the Indiana admit from the results board, so yes, I can confirm they've started sending out acceptances. I missed their phone call, and I didn't get very many details from the voicemail, but I'll update the thread as soon as I speak with them.

    Good luck!

Don't feel silly; when I brought it to the Saturnalia party in 2011 a room full of Classicists wouldn't stop making jokes about it all evening!

Conscia Fati reacted to JonathanEdwards in PhD applicants 2012-13, final results poll
I was wondering if PhD applicants for 2012-13 would mind answering a poll for the benefit of next year’s applicants? The prospect of pursuing a PhD in Classics with a poor economy and the humanities under attack is pretty daunting. When people start the process for the next admission cycle, it would be nice if they could see a snapshot of what the results really look like. The PhD application thread quickly expanded to an unreadable point as people updated their results (particularly confusing when people got offers from multiple universities).

Also, please share some anecdotal evidence in your *single* post:
    1) if you got feedback, was there anything in particular that made the difference to your getting in?
    2) what level of funding, if any, came with the offer you accepted?
    3) for those of you who accepted placement in a program that was not your first choice, was it your so-called ‘safety’ program?

My apologies for starting this thread while a few people haven’t heard yet. I waited too long to ask a similar question last year, and everyone departed to begin packing for their move to their new university, so there was little response. At any rate, congratulations to those of who who made it this year, and for those who didn't, don't give up!

The program is AHMA: http://ahma.berkeley.edu/. This post is mine -- sorry for the "University of Berkeley" -- I had entered another university result on my phone, and it did a fun mismatch of "UC-Berkeley" and "University of"...

It is my understanding that there were two spots this year and that acceptances have been sent out. I do believe there is a wait-list?

Conscia Fati reacted to muchado in Rhetoric and Composition PhD. Where did you apply?
I got an offer from Louisville late last night via an email from the Director of Graduate Studies. I was absolutely not expecting to hear good news this early, nor did I think I had a chance at such a great school. I'm pretty sure I haven't stopped smiling all day.

In addition to the acceptance, I was told that I was being nominated for a fellowship, so there's a chance that they are notifying in waves.

Hope everyone else will hear good news soon!

Except that you don't, you can never, know who you are up against. Your application may well be "top 25 material"--in a year that you simply get edged out by a particularly good pool of applicants.

This is not a process wholly within our control--we can only try and ensure that we're doing our best to fit what (we think) department X may deem worthwhile, while ensuring a natural research fit, etc.

If I'm confronted with a situation where I am indeed the 26th person on a list of 25 (absolute) admits, then yes, I will feel rather put out.
