  1. I think we'll hear from NYU and Pitt (hopefully sooner than later... I'm going nuts!).
  2. My field has the potential to be rather interdisciplinary, so there are great advantages to that. Outside of what I specialize in, I love humanist philosophy, literature, opera, theology, Medieval to modern history (esp. European and early American), epistemology, and though I don't understand it much at a micro theoretical level, things like theoretical physics. The academics I know tend to be very specialized, but also very intelligent across the board. I think the idea that we become so specialized we don't learn about anything else is a stereotype of the academic class, and is silly, especially if you consider that the more synapses you develop, the quicker you learn new things - including in fields other than your own.
  3. Yeah, yesterday was ridiculously quiet too, even though about 60 people were viewing the topics! CONGRATULATIONS! I am crossing my fingers (and pressing my thumbs) that this is a sign of more good news to come.
  4. Now I remember! They had to translate their application materials in the second round.
  5. I'm a current full grant, so I didn't have to prove language, but I'm not sure this is true of ETAs. I can check in, but I seem to remember my colleagues talking about having to prove their German (how they did this I'm not sure). Before anyone freaks out, I've spoken to some of the ETAs and their German is really just okay, like good enough to order a coffee, but not good enough to hold a conversation.
  6. This was for many years the norm. Most schools have phased out of this (although I kind of wish my diploma were in Latin).
  7. 10k a quarter is rather robust.
  8. I just read some Kant for the first time (outside of summaries) over Christmas. My god, the man was brilliant!
  9. Rejection should be assumed once the letter arrives. A lot of schools do trickles, a lot do waves, and still others have no discernible patters.
  10. Many many congratulations! For the sake of the rest of the good people here (namely their sanity - I don't have sanity, nor did I apply there), mind divulging: was it a form letter, or did it seem personalized?
  11. Did everyone disappear to watch for a Wisconsin e-mail or something?
  12. GMU is sending out rejections before we've seen any acceptances? Sorry to whomever posted that.
  13. Congrats to Wisconsin admits!
  14. No, sorry. According to last year's results, though, acceptances seemed to have come out at two different times. I'll cross my fingers for you.
  15. Which school is this for? Be honest with your POI. Maybe: "I have no definitive ranking. Of course continuing to learn from and work under you would be an honor, but if I were lucky enough to get into this program and some others on my list, I don't know that I'd have a clear choice one way or the other."
  16. Nope. Don't know if that's good or bad news for those still waiting.
  17. Ah my bad. It's almost noon back home.
  18. Did the snail mail come yet today?
  19. Anybody got any inside info on Pitt?
  20. I was asked this in an interview. I was fortunate, in that it's easily a top 3 choice out of 9 (and would come down to offer specifics), but I'm not sure how likely they are to keep you on the top of their list if you say: "Well, I applied to 15 schools, and yours is number 14 for me."
  21. FYI to those who are waiting on UNC, last year they had a really early admit too, followed by a wave the second week of February.
  22. I think this is the case.
  23. I was surprised I was the first! I did some work this morning, and then just got back from an hour walk.
  24. Congrats to UNC admit! A very awesome program. I didn't apply, but even still I'm beyond jealous.
  25. I was going to distract myself from here with some more progress on my current project, but since I had to reinstall Windows I also find myself reinstalling certain programs I need to process my data, on an Internet connection better suited to 1999. Fingers crossed for everyone this week. I'm only expecting (hoping) one response this week, but that doesn't mean I won't stare at my e-mail all day.
