  1. Why does the term feminist get so much hate?
  2. quarter machine
  3. Sounds like you already were a feminist.
  4. Your scores make you competitive for every program out there. If the AWA score is a serious concern, reach out to specific programs (maybe POIs) and ask. My guess is that they will value that a lot less than your other scores and your writing sample.
  5. Haha. Although, I believe that 33% number is specifically referring to undergraduate applications, which are on an upward trajectory nationwide (schools are spending a lot of money to be able to reject more people). From the school's newspaper: "More likely, the increase was a result of CU recruiters visiting an extra 120 high schools last fall. Plus, the university began using the Common Application, which makes it easier for prospective students to apply to more schools."
  6. Ditto on Pitt. Last year they did acceptances and waitlists between Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. I'd guess that the 29 or 30 is possible this year for acceptances so that they can still do waitlists before the week ends.
  7. I think the reason I've enjoyed it so much recently is because it's very simple. It's known for being less aromatic than, say, a Pinot Noir (by the way, a German Spätburgunder, particularly from the vineyards of Baden, comes highly recommended from this novice oenophile), but it's a very old grape with a rich heritage (its name comes from the Latin for blood of Jove, which I think is really cool).
  8. ... I mean, I get that there was some action earlier, but I feel like today should have brought more news. I don't know why I was convinced it would, but I was.
  9. I've almost purchased things like this in the past. I've really taken to the Italian Sangiovese grape recently. I went "oldie but goody" tonight with an Australian Shiraz Cabernet.
  10. The political science DGS posts in the political science section periodically. Although they updated the website on their end to indicate admits, apparently the system itself is only announcing a few at a time. I don't know if that's happening for all programs or just political science, but in any case I figured it's worth sharing.
  11. Could just be that they take applicant data and add it to their list-serv. I wouldn't take it to indicate anything (though I hope I'm wrong as in, they now want you, their Ph.D. admit, to be familiar with their other programs).
  12. I think I'd know if I were you, but one never does know... I will keep my eyes open for that! It's Italian, right? And that's how I came across the Carmenere. It's used in other grape products, but very rarely for wine. There just isn't a large demand for it.
  13. And I will say that I've been pretty expansive in my selection. It's a good excuse to acquaint myself better with different wines. I had a Chilean Carmenere this week - it was, of all things, spicy. Originally from the vineyards of Bordeaux, it's rare in France now.
  14. Ugh, I feel bad about my life now hahaha. I've read that men can drink 2-3 glasses a night without adversely affecting their health. I seem to be doing fine in that regard.
  15. Without revealing too much... 5. When did we start?
  16. Question: should we be responding to these formal informal acceptances? That is, when it's clear that it's an informative admissions letter, but not a personal one, should we be responding with our enthusiasm? Or can we save our responses for when we have questions?
  17. Someone should call Pitt
  18. It's your call, but I agree with IRToni's advice. In either case, best wishes for success and good news!
  19. It isn't weird to call and ask, but you'll have to ask yourself: if they decide to reveal their decision on the phone, do you really want to find out bad news that way?
  20. That seems to be what they've implied, though that isn't true historically. I wouldn't count yourself out yet, though. It seems that Boulder doesn't always admit everyone at the same time, according to the results page. That could be why they announced first admits this week, so they could do the rest next week?
  21. Not sure entirely. Boulder funds exclusively (?) through TAs, and they do TA assignments after a.) meeting the students at recruitment weekend or b.) talking with them first on the phone/Skype. The gist of the e-mail I got seemed to want to imply that I'd be funded through a TA, but was unable to do so firmly. So likely decisions on funding are made early March.
  22. Thanks, IRToni! Only 8 more chances for heartbreak. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to feel, yet. It didn't help that I read the e-mail groggily as I woke up on my phone. If it had come last night while I stared at my inbox, I'd probably have stopped breathing.
  23. Congratulations to everyone whose last night was filled with excitement! I'm in at Boulder. Like so many of us, I'm on round 2.
  24. Congrats to Purdue admits!
