  1. The Tacoma branch is older and more established so I'd say it has the better reputation, but there is a lot of investment going into UW Bothell as far as beefing up technical programs and building dorms to make it seem less like a commuter school. If I were you I would look at what classes are offered when at each location and see what best fits your schedule and interests. You can also likely take summer courses at the Seattle campus and that is bus commutable from either branch. I think your job prospects coming out of either program will be very good. Bothell is closer to tech giants on the Eastside but if you're just doing a 1 year masters program I don't know how much that will matter to you. PM me if you have any questions about the city of Bothell (lived here for ~20 years).
  2. Perhaps you should check out more job type web resources where they discuss having to work with jerks since that is a situation where you can't avoid the problem people. I think we could give better advice if we had more context. Is the issue that they refuse to take any suggestions you make seriously or just that they are rude in general? If it's the later and you're in a situation where you must respond I would come up things to say to deflect their comments and move the conversation on to another subject. "Yeah, being able to think critically/write well/do thorough research is totally useless, what do you think about x" or "yeah, but it was a fun waste of money/I met cool people/etc, isn't y annoying?" and then move the topic onto something else where you guys have common ground etc. Think of jokes to make about your reading hobby too. I usually go with relating it to television or share the plot of an entertaining book I've recently read. You don't need to waste your time justifying your choice. Make a comment that signals you are done with the subject and move on. If this is a work thing I would suggest having a meeting with your supervisor under the guise of asking for advice. "I'm having trouble being taken seriously/communicating with coworkers, do you have any advice on what I can do to?" type of thing without calling people out or naming names. This lets your boss know there are issues without seeming like you want to blame others and they might have good solutions. As far as using words people don't know, I would just try to be good natured about it if they ask about a word. Make it clear that you're not trying to make them feel dumb and if they don't understand something they should ask and you'll happily rephrase. Find someone removed from the situation to vent to and hang in there.
  3. I was unable to take real analysis as an undergrad and I still got into a lot of really good masters programs for biostats with some of the advanced math courses you mentioned. If you decide to go onto a PhD you can always take analysis over the summer or while in grad school. That's my plan if down the road I want to take advanced theory courses.

One thing to think about doing if you're coming from out of town is to sublet for fall and then find a place in November or December. In the u district there are often sublets available from students who are studying abroad for a quarter. That way you'll be in town to look at places and according to a friend, rent is often cheapest for leases starting in the winter. Downsides are potentially having a crappy place at first and having to apartment hunt during finals and holidays. If you come out one month early in August you can also probably find a cheap sublet for a month to live while you apartment hunt.
  5. I am trying to find a summer internship at a biotech in my hometown. I want to save up some $$.
  6. I'm sorry, that is a long time to wait. That would make me assume there isn't any funding available. Many of the MS programs I have gotten into w/o funding seem flexible about the April 15 deadline. If that is your top choice and you would attend w/o funding I would ask a second choice for more time. Waiting sucks.
  7. Are you one the waiting list? Perhaps UW will continue to make offers as people who have already been admitted decline.
  8. I planned a trip mid-march to visit all of the places I applied so I could hit the open house days for the two programs that have accepted me. This includes stays in the cities of the two schools I am waiting to hear from. I am wondering whether I'll have even heard back from the last two schools (including my top choice) by my trip, let alone offered admission. Based on last years results I should hear back this week or next week so I'll be compulsively check my email and the results.
  9. I applied the day before the deadline so I think December 14th. They didn't give me any information about how many funding offers they are going to make.
  10. I got a call last night at ~7:45 pacific and then they sent me an email with an attached copy of the funding offer letter. The prof called me after an adcom meeting. They didn't specify whether or not I will have an RA or TA position. I'm happy to share my stats, but I don't think that comparing credentials is all that helpful - we can't really compare LOR or SOP and I think that transcripts from different schools with different coursework are hard to compare by GPA. My undergrad GPA is 3.78 and I don't remember my GRE scores. I have 1.5 years of research experience in Theoretical/Computational Neuroscience. My undergrad degree is in Neurobiology but I also have a math minor and a qsci minor (applied stats classes for bio and ecology researchers). I think that one thing that makes me an attractive candidate for MS programs is the fact that I have a strong biology background (competitive undergrad degree and lots of honors science coursework) with enough math and stats coursework to suggest I can transition over to statistics work.
  11. In addition to Hopkins and Harvard, I applied to UMICH, UNC, and UW. UMICH has offered me funding so I anticipate declining UW. That's where I did my undergrad and I want to go somewhere new. I would prefer UNC to UMICH, but I still haven't gotten any communication from the department regarding my offer - only the graduate school.

It's pretty easy to find a part time job near the U Dist. as long as you don't mind retail or food service. On campus jobs tend to pay min wage but are usually really great about working with your schedule each quarter and giving time off for breaks and finals week. I would take a look at craigslist.
  13. I'm still waiting on Harvard and Hopkins but based on combing past years results this week is the earliest I would expect to hear back. For the programs I have been accepted into I am waiting to hear about potential funding before I even begin to decide where I am going to go. Waiting sucks but I think this is a case of no news is good news, or at least not bad news, as spots will open up down the road. Fairly sure I saw a UCLA MS admit in the results page but I don't remember which day it was.
