  1. I mean the NSERC supplements(?), which it lists in the letter. It just points to the "Students" page for "information about, and application procedures for, the different supplements." edit: if they mean for you to apply for supplementary funding from your school that wording is confusing. I also thought I read somewhere in the forums that there are actually some top ups available. I'm pretty sure I've read about one for Canadian students to study abroad for a term (not that that matters to me anymore, since I'm transferring to a US school). Oh, while I'm at it, does anyone know what the procedure is if the school you are taking the award up at is different than those listed on your application?
  2. making the most difficult decision of my life...

  3. My (successful) letter arrived at my parents' house in Brampton today. Not sure why NSERC sent it to my permanent rather than mailing address. Does anyone know what the link is / deal is with supplementary top-ups?

Hey, I don't know anything about U of T's family housing, but I can tell you that it's not hard to find a place to live via the usual route (e.g. craigslist). My experience with U of T's residences overall (I lived in residence for my first year of undergrad) is that it is way more expensive than finding a place on your own, and unlikely to be nicer than a place you could find on your own. Some people I know who have moved from far away did things like subletting a place for a month and then looked at places when they were already in town. Others rented places without seeing it, and then just moved when their lease was up after one year.
  5. I had OGS this year, and in your contract of acceptance agreed not to work more than 10 hours of work per week. I never bothered trying to work more, so I don't know how well it was enforced. Before I had OGS I was told that I could not work more than 10 hours a week by my department as a condition of my stipend. I was told unofficially that if i had a job off campus that the school would have no way of knowing. As for OGS, it's a provincial award, and presumably your taxes would reflect if you held more positions / worked more, right? Personally, I held a TA position that was contracted to be 10 hours a week, and the OGS + school top up is enough.
  6. I'm not technically sure that I'm on a waitlist, my acceptance is pending approval by a senior faculty member, but does anyone else feel like you're not really wanted (desired?) at a school when you're waitlisted / not immediately accepted? I have no doubts that the school that accepted me really wants me. Ah, pride...
  7. For the last month I've been listening to all of the Death Cab for Cutie albums on random. As of two days ago I switched to listening to the album "Beautiful Midnight" by Matthew Good Band.
  8. In a direct PhD program you are eligible to apply for a PGS/CGS-M for year 1 and year 2. Meaning that you can apply before entering the program, and if unsuccessful, can apply again in the first year of your program.
  9. You never know. It depends on what programs the others are waiting on (your top choice may not be everyone else's top choice). I interviewed at a school 2.5 weeks ago and haven't heard anything, and only rejections (without interview) have been posted on the forum. I tried contacting the grad coordinator yesterday to see when I might hear back, since I have an acceptance at another school which I need to make a decision on by April 15th, and she hasn't responded to my email yet...
  10. Thanks. Apparently everyone who got an NSERC at Waterloo should have gotten an email yesterday. A friend found out from the GSO that everyone else (at Waterloo) has to wait for the letter in the mail to determine if they were put on the wait list or rejected.

Hey, I did my undergrad at U of T. The best way to find an apartment is probably on craigslist: http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/, the trouble with apartment hunting in Toronto is that places go very quickly (I've gone to see a place on multiple occassions, on the same day as the posting, to already find them rented out), and there is a good chance that no one will rent to you without meeting you first. Also, in Toronto people are supposed to give 60 days notice, so places go up for rent long before you move in. There isn't really a good season for apartment hunting, but close to the university people tend to move in / out on May or June 1st or September 1st. It's hard to say how long it'll take you to find a place to live, but setting up everything else shouldn't take too long. As for a ticket, that depends on if you have a planned return trip in mind, or if it is significantly cheaper than a one way ticket. I recommend flights.google.com The best place to live imo is Kensington market / the Annex - North of Dundas, West of McCaul, South of Dupont, and East of Bathurst.
  12. The Grad Studies Office at Waterloo sent me an email this morning with congratulations on receiving a PGS D. They said a letter would come in the mail from NSERC next week.
  13. I applied to Neuro and Cog Sci (NACS). My rejection letter was dated February 22nd.
  14. I'm presently having this debate. It's been 2 weeks since my last interview (at what I think is my current top choice), which leaves me worrying that I've been waitlisted. What is particularly troubling is that I have an acceptance elsewhere (that I also really like), and April 15th is getting closer. I just want to know so that I can sit down and decide. To email, or not to email, that is the question...
  15. Accepted: Northwestern Waiting (post-interview): Rochester Rejected: Harvard, UMD
  16. Zabius, I feel your pain. I'm in the same boat. Ugh.
  17. Given that some people have received acceptances / rejections on the Results page, and I haven't heard one way or another I'm assuming I got rejected.
  18. OGS was different this year than it was in previous years. I have an OGS right now, but didn't make it out of the school for NSERC last year. This year I made it out of the school for NSERC but got waitlisted for OGS. So you're not out of the running yet!
  19. Depends on the year, and what school you applied to. You can try to estimate by using the numbers from last year. This document will tell you how many applications each school sent out, and how many they were awarded: Here
  20. There is a Post-bac program at Maryland as well: http://ling.umd.edu/baggett/ Edit: you could also take courses at the LSA Summer Institute: http://lsa2013.lsa.umich.edu/
  21. Is it possible that you're wait-listed and that someone else at Rochester might have considered supervising you? I'm interviewing in BCS next weekend, which feels incredibly far off still...
  22. I just got an email to check my decision status on the application site (the email said that the official notification would also be sent in the mail). I really thought that UMD was the best fit for me, and both professors I was in contact with thought I was a good fit both for them and the program. Oh well.
  23. I presume that many of them are willing to take your money... Though, word of caution, if you don't wind up going to the school you take courses at, there's a good chance your credits won't transfer. Unless you have a longing desire to take classes it might be nicer to just enjoy a bit of freedom before school starts in the fall.
  24. I would recommend asking if you can delay your response. The only worry is that it might affect your funding. A friend of mine was late accepting an offer from the University of Waterloo and they told her that they couldn't guarantee that she would get the funding promised to her in her offer letter since they assumed she was rejecting and had relocated the funds. edit: typos
  25. 25. I started my PhD at 22, but unfortunately my advisor is leaving my school and I find myself in search of a new home (to finish my PhD).
