  1. Got an acceptance on 22nd Feb, with the Opera of the future group. Had few portfolio visits in the last week of January followed by a Skype interview with the PI in the first week of Feb. It seems like the selection process is completely unique to each group and PI, which might make it frustrating for applicants in the dark. For future applicants, I think connecting on an individual level with the PI or the senior PhD students of the group, much before the application process, helps a lot (Atleast to get an idea of the upcoming projects and what the PI might be looking for; or if they are keen on taking students at all). My congratulations to others accepted, crossing all the fingers and toes i have, for those on the waitlist. For those that did not get in this time, keep working on your inspiring projects, making an impact in your community, read your 'statement of purpose' again. That "purpose" is still within you and there are so many ways you can keep at it. I look forward to crossing paths with all of you!
  2. Hey, I am an incoming grad student joining the terminal Masters (MA/MST) at CCRMA. I don't think I need to add much to the above answer. I am from an Engineering background and have not done any sort of official music courses. Having technical projects and programming projects in music probably got me the admit. So I guess a lot of stress is given to computer science research prowess at CCRMA. Though I would say that if you have good ideas and the passion for "Computer Music", irrespective of any computer science degrees you may or may not hold, you should be a strong enoughcandidate. MIT media labs also sounds amazing and I was thinking of applying for PhD there but apparently there are no direct PhD programs at media labs. Only select masters students at media labs are allowed to evolve into PhD candidates.
  3. Hello ComposerX, That sounds really interesting.. quantifying timbre seems to be a really exciting topic. It must be a really spectral based approach with loads of signal processing level analysis. And good luck to the results that you are waiting for. I am also highly interested in music retrieval, for tracking, separating and maybe transcribing different instruments in a polyphoinc multi instrumental piece. This opens up such a vast area of querying for songs through humming, vocal separation from songs, key/chord/scale detections. I am currently trying to detect scale for a single instrument recording and maybe creating an algorithm for randomly picking notes so that one can jam with the computer. Hello sautille, This was the only place I applied for in Computer Music Technology, (though some others in my research group/friends have applied in GaTech and Spain). Unfortunately the MST program at Stan is not highly funded, and is very different every year funding wise. I think only a couple of applicants received funding this year. For the rest, its time to begin the TA/RA hunt!!
  4. Hey everyone, I am an international engineering student from India and have always been interested in Music. Through my undergrad studies I have had loads of opportunities to taste research in Signal Processing and Acoustics delving into the field of Music/Speech Processing. Simultaneously learning Music I applied into my dream program of Masters in Music Science and Technology at Stanford, under the CCRMA (Computer Center for Research in Music and Acoustics). I have recently received my dream admit and am overjoyed! I was just wondering if there is anybody else like me into Music Technology, or even someone admitted into the same program? PS: Sorry if this is the wrong place for me to be posting this.
  5. Hello everyone, I dont know if this is the right forum for posting this (so forgive me if I break any forum rules) I am an Engineering student from India who has been working in Signal Processing especially in Speech/Sound. Merging it with my passion for music I came into Music Retrieval/Signal Processing and have been working on several research topics over the past year. As I was applying for Fall 2013 grad studies I had also applied to Stanford's MA/MST program (dream) offered in collaboration with CCRMA research group (computer sc.). This seemed tailor made for my kind of research interests and I had been in touch with Prof. Julius Smith from Stan. Today I received my acceptance from Stanford's MA/MST program!! I am extremely happy and excited. I need to start doing some research now about the coursework, fees, about stan, music in general etc. Any help from seniors or people in my field would be really helpful. Since I don't have any other students from my Undergrad university working in my field.
