Yeah, it's extreme. I would need a really big scholarship to make that worthwhile. However, they are a powerhouse on the neuro stuff, which is my area of interest, and my bf's company is headquartered in Chicago. I'm thinking I might look there again when I'm ready to do my PhD, as there is so much more funding for PhD students.

Just got an acceptance letter from the graduate coordinator! It was attached to an email. Has anyone received any info about funding with their acceptance? Best wishes to all of you!

Here's my figures, based on last year's numbers: 2012-2013 tuition for master's students per quarter, full time (3-4 credit hours): $14,460 Based on the program website and sample course plan, it usually takes 8-9 quarters for in-field students to complete the program. (I was told it could be more if I want to do the neurogenic concentration and a thesis, but let's be optimistic and call it 8 quarters): 8 x $14,460 = $115,680 ($57,840 a year) Activity fee is $78 per term: $78 x 8 = $624 Subtotal: 115680 + 624 = $116,304 Their student health insurance plan, for those of us who don't already have a policy from a spouse, is $2842 annually. ($5684 for two years) So my estimated total is $121,988. Note that this is based on 2012-13 tuition; the website said to expect tuition to go up each year.

Question for y'all: What do you know about the summer intensive session at the beginning of the CU Boulder SLP program? It must be quite short since it starts early August, and it looks like it's only 4 credit hours total (applied speech science + clinical theory and practice). What I really want to know right now is how it's billed. Is the tuition like the other summer session? Per credit hour? Do we have to pay for an extra "semester" of health insurance and the SLHS program fee for the intensive summer session? If admitted, I can always ask the department about this, but I thought I'd ask here first in case you folks know something about it! I'm trying to get all the small details of my comparative tuition costs spreadsheet as fully completed as possible so that it will be easier to make a decision as soon as I hear back from everywhere.

The other side of being accepted....shopping and planning the trip! :D
Tuck replied to Ohm's topic in Officially Grads
I've started doing the opposite of shopping - downsizing!!! I figure the more crap we can get rid of, the easier moving will be. I've started donation boxes for the thrift store, the animal shelter, and the women's shelter, and have started going through the closet a little bit. I have a few things I need to sell, too. -
To add to what everyone else has said, which I agree with, I want to chime in that I think rankings may matter somewhat more if you are planning for a career in academia. I plan to go straight to a PhD after getting my Cs, so rankings/reputation are somewhat important to me. What's more important to me is that my prospective school have faculty who could advise my thesis, labs relevant to my research interests, and profs and who will have connections to faculty I might want to do my PhD with. Also, on the employment front for non-phd-track people, local/regional reputation of a school can matter. If you know you want to end up practicing in a particular area of the country, schools and clinic placements that will be recognizable to employers in that area would be good to have on your resume. But I agree that "fit" and a lot of other factors can trump rankings. Praxis pass rates and employment rates are at the top of the list.

Northwestern Masters Applicants
Tuck replied to SLPtoBEweee's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Congrats to everyone who has heard! If not, don't worry - who knows what they're doing, and it's not over till it's over. I also didn't see anything about funding, and I'm not going to get my hopes up until I do. I am hoping that this letter from the Graduate School will be followed up with an email from the department with more information. For example, I'm sure they have an earlier decision deadline that they want to tell us about, since the letter says 8/9/13. -
Thanks everyone!

Northwestern Masters Applicants
Tuck replied to SLPtoBEweee's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Good morning Northwestern people! Wake up and check your ApplyYourself status!!! Mine now has a letter from the Graduate School. I got in! -
I got into Northwestern! Woo! There was a letter from the Graduate School on ApplyYourself. I wonder if we'll also be getting an email from the department?
-
Good to know, thank you! Best of luck to you with the waitlist.
-
I hope so. I just want to know one way or another! I do wish there were a way to enter time on the results board so we can tell if people are just getting the emails, or just now posting results.
-
This is the only reason I'm somewhat calm right now. :-)
-
This is agonizing! I only see four posts on the results page. I hope we aren't going to have to wait until Monday for more news. I fear that we may, since it's after the end of the workday in Colorado now.

I haven't heard anything either, and my status on the website hasn't changed. :-(

I know that no one who is getting married wants to hear this, but the lifelong probability of a marriage ending in divorce is substantial. You just never know what could happen in 5, 10, 20, 40, etc. years. People change, people surprise you no matter how well you think you know them, and you may even surprise yourself. I know many divorced women in academia who feel obligated to keep someone else's name for professional continuity, and it can really stink - even moreso if you remarry. Therefore, I feel that the potential pitfalls of having a common name are less problematic than the possibility (no matter how remote) of getting divorced and having to deal with the name issue again when you are more established in your career. And, as others have noted, there are many ways to mitigate having a common name. You can always keep your surname for legal and professional purposes while using your husband's surname socially/informally.

Hi everyone! Two questions: I'm planning to visit Vanderbilt in a couple of weeks. I am going by myself. I will have most of a Sunday plus a Monday afternoon/early evening to explore the campus and town outside of my scheduled visit. I will have a rental car, so I hope to spend some of that time driving around to scope out neighborhoods and get the lay of the land. Is there anything I should make sure to see? Also, do y'all have any suggestions for solo dining? Secondly, if I choose Vandy, I will be moving with my s.o. and two big dogs. We'd love to rent a house or townhouse with a yard. Otherwise, we at least need dog-friendly apartments. Does anyone have any tips on this?

Anyone relocating with family for grad school?
Tuck replied to travelnguy's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I am relocating with a long-term boyfriend and two big dogs. It's not as big of a deal as it is for you guys with kids, but I narrowed my list of schools from 8-12-ish down to 4 based on places his industry has a presence. He has already been scoping out opportunities and will be actively applying for jobs as soon as I commit somewhere. If his current company will let him work remotely for awhile (which seems likely), he'll be moving with me right away and doing that. Otherwise, he'll probably wait until he has an offer somewhere to join me. That may make rent higher than normal for awhile. I'm a little concerned about finding housing options that will accept two 50-something lbs. loveable mutts. -
California SLP programs with SPRING admissions?
Tuck replied to smartypants14's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I think I'll probably rent a car, as I also want to drive around and look at neighborhoods while I'm there. You could probably get a cab or a Super Shuttle to your hotel, but I'm not very familiar with the area either. -

I also got an acceptance email from Vanderbilt today! The email indicated that funding decisions will not go out until at least March 22. My attendance is probably contingent on funding... I need to think about the timing of a visit based on that.

Math Section GRE for Masters Speech Pathology
Tuck replied to BlueEyes's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I second eerichh on practice, practice, practice. Use the PowerPrep that ETS provides, get a book (or several) and work through it, etc. I used Khan Academy to touch up a few basic skills that I haven't employed in a decade - it was fun! Also look into whether your university offers any resources, if you are currently enrolled somewhere. I took a free course on the math section through mine. The big challenge for me on the math was timing/pacing. You really have to work through the problems quickly. I would work on that more, if I were re-taking. -
I really want to read this UConn rejection letter that everyone is talking about on the results page. Anyone have it?
-
Hi meangreen! I'm in Austin. What about yourself?

Congratulations on getting it all figured out! That must be a big mental relief. I am jealous, as I still have not heard a peep from any of my schools!
