I noticed that most people here seem to be talking about renting apartments and doing room shares. Am I likely to be able to rent a house in SLC? I live with my boyfriend and our two dogs, so if I end up going to UofU, we'd like to rent a little house/cottage/bungalow/whatever with a fenced-in yard. I've done some online searching, but I can't seem to find the right keywords for houses that aren't housemate/room share situations.

  3. In theory, but they had better do it right. Over in the speech-language pathology forums, it sounds like the CSDCAS (Communication Sciences and Disorders Centralized Application Service) was a nightmare for many people. Apparently, they didn't forward many applicants' information to their schools in time. Fortunately for me, none of my schools used it. But yes, properly executed, this would be a godsend.
  4. Another option, rather than doing a full post-bac program, would be to just take the prereqs as a non-degree-seeking student. For Utah State's online program, all you have to do is send in some info, as I recently learned here on thegradcafe. Basically everyone is accepted. A few folks on here have gone that route, and I will be taking one or two courses from them this summer to finish up my prereqs.
  5. I would reply by politely thanking him for looking into it and getting back to you, which seems like common courtesy. I think it also couldn't hurt at this point to gently reiterate your interest in his research.
  6. What did they say, and what did you say? Did they ask whether you were planning to attend?
  7. I don't understand how schools can have a FAFSA deadline that early. My understanding is that brokerages/holding companies/etc. don't have to mail out tax forms until February 15, so if you have stocks, mutual funds, an IRA, etc., you may not even have your documents in time to prepare your taxes and FAFSA for February 2. I know I didn't get some of my 1099-Bs until around Feburary 19, so I was scrambling to finish everything up this week.
  8. What is the Basic Skills Test?
  9. I haven't really talked to my mom at all about my grad school plans for this exact reason. I am too stressed out to be fielding a bunch a negative comments, and anyways, this is not the hill I want to die on.
  10. Maybe the meant the graduate coordinator rather than the DGS.
  11. DShenge, I also applied to the University of Utah. I saw that your other two choices were both in GA. How did you choose Utah?
  12. The loans are "different" in that grad students can only get unsubsidized loans, I believe. Also, you should check the FAFSA deadlines for schools you've applied to. Some of my mine were March 1. You have to do your taxes before you can do the FAFSA.
  13. Me too! All my other schools said decisions would be ready mid-march, but NW said late February/early March, which is NOW! Hopefully they won't be as late as they were last year.
  14. I know this sucks, but if it makes you feel any better, the office that runs the annual giving program know anything about what's going on with admissions. :-(
  15. I just finished up my taxes and my FAFSA. Woohoo! One more thing done.
  16. Brock, I believe.

  18. Hang in there! Looks like the floodgates are opening.
  19. Midnight streetlight was waiting to hear from UVA, right? Where'd she go?

  22. Univ. of Utah and Northwestern both used "Apply Yourself" for the programs I applied to. Vanderbilt had what appeared to be their own proprietary thing, which was.... not user-friendly. I found most of the applications fairly annoying.
  23. Here are some of my two girls looking less stupid. I have been taking them on weekend hikes lately to combat the stress of waiting.
  24. I think "call me as makes you comfortable" is nice. Some students (especially older students or those from certain cultural groups) won't be comfortable with first names, although I know I would prefer it. My ex-husband called my parents "Mr. and Mrs. Xxxxxx" through our entire marraige, and my aunt's husband does the same with my grandparents (and has for 20 years now). One of my instructors who was a grad student once said we could call her by her first name after visiting her during office hours. :-)
