In-Person vs. Skype Interview--- Advice Wanted
katieliz456 replied to katieliz456's topic in Interviews and Visits
(I'm also nervous because this is their 1st year doing interviews. I have this feeling that I'll fly all the way out there, then show up for a 30-min tour and a 30-min "chat" with some professors, and then it'll be over!) -

Awesome! I hope some of your good luck rubs off on this group : ) -
I dream that I end up on a new campus (not my undergrad school) and I keep getting SUPER lost. I've never had this problem in real life, and my program is usually contained in just 1 or 2 building on campus, which makes it even stranger!

In-Person vs. Skype Interview--- Advice Wanted
katieliz456 replied to katieliz456's topic in Interviews and Visits
Thanks for the input! I guess the finances won't be a huge factor, since my parents have offered to help. I guess i just feel bad "wasting" money to visit a place I've already seen, and would rather save it in case i get accepted at one of the 4 schools I've never been to And thank you for sharing your experience. I think that's what makes me want to go visit, since I'm not sure how well I'd come across via Skype :/ -
Today I was invited to interview at BU. This is one of only two potential schools that interviews (the other is my current undergrad, which is about 5mins from my house). All invited students have the option of Skype or in-person. They say the strongly recommend in-person, but it would be at least a 7-hr travel day each way for me, and cost close to $1000 for flights, hotel, meals, etc. Do y'all think that choosing Skype would hurt my chances? Is there a polite/acceptable way to ask if they would provide any reimbursement or accommodations? Thanks! P.S.- I visited this school in August to tour the facilities and meet the program director. I am also familiar with Boston and this particular neighborhood, but it would still be nice to meet more faculty members and other grad students.

Eeek, that would be stressful! One of my schools doesn't do online recs, so I panicked that they might have gotten lost in the mail/sent to the wrong place/ accidentally thrown away. I'm glad to hear that everything worked out for you, though!! Good luck!

I'm wondering that, too I want to go in-person to make a good impression, but last minute flights from AZ aren't cheap. If it means I have a good chance of acceptance, I will suck it up and buy a plane ticket...but if all/most of us got invited, I will probably do the Skype interview and save my money. Oh, and I also did a visit/tour this summer, so I got to see the school/clinic/area and talk with Brie, so i don't think I would personally get much from another visit. -

From what I've read on here, it sounds like this might be the first year they've done interviews :/ -

Just got off the phone with Michelle mentis from bu. She said it is via email and this is just for the FIRST round of interviews??!?! Apparently they plan to do 2 rounds..... -
I'd say go for it, especially since your visit will be reimbursed! Even if you are less than enthusiastic about the interview, you can at least network with others in the field and scope out the campus/area. Maybe you'll end up collaborating with some of these people for future research, or maybe you'll eventually get a post-doc offer from the university.

Fall back plans if no one accepts you
katieliz456 replied to la912's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Hopefully none of us will have to really worry about a Plan B, but I suppose I'll use the 4th year of my full-ride scholarship to get a post-bacc certificate or do the SLPA program. Or possibly find work doing respite&hab, school paraprofessional, daycare teacher, etc. That way, I can make my 2014 application more competitive and start earning $$$ -
Yep! Or that the adcomms go through apps alphabetically...and by the time they get to the end of the alphabet (like me), they've already filled every seat & the waitlist!

That's what I'm thinking, because they said student will be notified BETWEEN 2/12 and 2/14. I heard earlier that they would have invites by today, so I think they meant they would mail the final invites today, and depending on geographic location/USPS the invited students would receive the letter tomorrow-Thurs. -

Yeah, I saw that too :/ if we are talking about the same post, it looks like they actually received the notification in late January (but didn't post it on here until Feb)?! I'm wondering if it has to do with funding...I know for UNC's autism grant (and others, I'm sure) students can't even access the application for funding until they are accepted. -
Yep, I won't start hearing back until early March. The adcomm at one of my schools doesn't even meet until their spring break (2nd week of march) Thankfully I have my undergrad thesis, RA-ship 19 credits, and 4 crazy roommates to keep me distracted
-
I was meeting with my thesis director today, and he was THISCLOSE to divulging some info about the applications they've received/reviewed so far... and then his phone rang! NOT cool. (The only thing I learned is that they received over 300 apps this year, which is not so encouraging!)

Darn, seriously? I had been waiting soooo patiently for the eleventh! Haha so it sounds like it will be an actual "snail-mail" letter then, right?! -
I think we all realize that a 3.0 is not typically considered a "competitive" GPA, but I think you definitely have a chance, and I think you're smart for choosing to wait to apply! I think your best bet might be doing several "little" things to boost your application, like: - Taking some classes after graduation, either toward a post-bacc certificate or just related classes at your local college (Child Development, Special Ed, ASL/Deaf Studies, Linguistics, Psychology, etc.) -From your brief bio, it seems like you might be someone who'd be good with relating to "culturally diverse" populations-- if you speak a 2nd language, perhaps try to take more classes in that and even see if you can get a certification. The culturally/linguistically diverse aspect seems to be VERY in-demand right now, so I'd take advantage of that if it interests you at all -Try to get involved in research/volunteer work/paid employment in your particular area of interest. Ask profs if you can come in 5 hr/week to transcribe language samples, code data, etc. Even if it isn't necessarily "hands on", it will show your commitment and work ethic -Because you seem open to moving, look to your godmother for resources. Maybe she can get you an aide position for the school district's summer program, or maybe she knows more recent SLP grads who still have connections! Stay positive, and goood luck!

SLP/Communication Disorders Masters Applicants
katieliz456 replied to SJS's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
There's a big one called IMAGAS, one called "SLP Grad Applicants- From USU and Beyond" (mainly online applicants, but all are welcome!), and one called "Future SLPs". IMAGAS seems to be the biggest/most popular, and the Grad Applicant one is really busy now. They all have super helpful people -

Exactly! I'm having a hard time because I sent all of mine in back in late November/early December. One of my apps isn't even "due" until Feb 15th I try to keep myself distracted but I always end up lurking on here/SLP Facebook groups, obsessively checking my email, etc -

Not sure if anyone else on this thread is applying to TCU, but I just found out their committee doesn't even meet until Spring Break (March 11-15). If nothing else, this application process is teaching me the value of patience
