2013 SLP Admissions Thread!
katieliz456 replied to midnight's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I doubt I'd get accepted, so I didn't want to waste the application fee/transcript fee/etc. Also, I am mainly interested in the clinical aspects (don't plan to pursue a PhD in the foreseeable future), so as long as I can get a variety of clinical experiences with good supervision, I'm happy! Most of my schools are in larger urban areas where there are plenty of hospitals, schools, SNFs, rehab facilities, etc to give me those experiences. I also wanted to try and be near family and/or friends -
Oh, and keep in mind that ASU requires students to interview in-person if they want a chance at admission. I'm betting there will be at least a few students who are unable/unwilling to travel out to Phoenix, so that should reduce the number to 85-ish!

Bad interview after being accepted?
katieliz456 replied to BucketOfFish's topic in Interviews and Visits
Hmm, I doubt they'd go as far as rescinding your acceptance just because of one slip-up. Any idea who "the guy on the phone" was? If it was some type of receptionist or someone from the university's general grad admissions department, I wouldn't sweat it too much -
There were over 300 applicants this year. (I'm currently an undergrad at ASU, so I heard the stats from my thesis director.) I couldn't help looking through the other email addresses to make sure my friends were invited, too They are also hiring several new faculty members for next year, so I think that they might accept a slightly higher amount of applicants:D I'm an AZ native living in Tempe, so if you all have questions regarding hotels/transportation, ask away!

BU Interviews for Fall 2013!
katieliz456 replied to katieliz456's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Hmm... I tried downloading mine several times, and I can "open" it as a .pdf , but it just looks like big black smudges instead of text :/ I am terrible at technology, so I have no clue what this means! -

Seriously, I'm hoping that this will be a nice distraction/adventure in the midst of all the waiting! -
BU Interviews for Fall 2013!
katieliz456 replied to katieliz456's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I'm planning to wear black dress pants (with black tights underneath) and nice flats. Then a conservative blouse with a blazer, and a coat over (for going outside). I will keep accessories minimal and carry small black leather purse and a folder with copies of transcripts, resume, etc. -

BU Interviews for Fall 2013!
katieliz456 replied to katieliz456's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I'm really curious about this, too. From what I saw on the "Results Search" page, it sounds like it is mainly for funding purposes...so apparently we are all people who are qualified for their program, but they are figuring out financial stuff. I'm hoping to get an RA/TA position wherever I go, so I'm hoping this interview goes well!! -

BU Interviews for Fall 2013!

Um... am I the only one who hasn't gotten a confirmed appointment yet? I had a dream last night that I was scheduled for Saturday at 6AM (which would be 4AM Arizona time!) Thankfully the appointments don't start until 8 -
Wow, I'm sorry I agree, if a school did that to me I would NOT want to be involved with them!

I really think they should've done something to compensate the people who were "accidentally" accepted :/

It seems like there are a lot of us attending the Boston University interviews next weekend (2/22-2/24). This is a place for us to connect and share ideas of what to do around the city I'm coming out from AZ, and will be staying 2 nights at the Boston Hotel Buckminster, which is apparently super close to Sargent College, right along the T, and offers a student discount-- only 89/night!

I've been working on my undergrad honors thesis for the past year-ish, and I have made up my mind that (for the near future) research is NOT for me However, I am definitely interested in pursuing a clinical doctorate if/when those programs become widely available. I could also possibly see myself trying the PhD thing much later down the road.... like after i start/raise a family of my own and have free time I will only be 22 when I finish my M.S., so I'd like to have a few decades away from school, then go back as an older student. Oh, and if this ever happens, I think I would like to either continue what I've been doing for my undergrad thesis (examining the accuracy of artic/phonology tests and creating new, supplemental scoring methods that give a more complete picture of the kid's abilities) or do something related to literacy and learning disabilities in the school-aged population.

Yes, i like this theory! Let's go with this! : D -
Have any of you received a negative recommendation?
katieliz456 replied to agnesxleon's topic in Letters of Recommendation
When I asked my profs, they specifically replied that they would be delighted to write me a "POSITIVE letter of rec". (In the future, I will make sure to include the word "positive" in my request.) And I wouldn't worry about the different program/focus. I am applying to speech pathology programs, but I asked an English professor who taught an academic writing course. It was a 15-person course so we became close, and the class involved writing research papers (that could potentially be submitted for publication in a journal) and doing a "poster session" on the paper. I knew that she could vouch for my professionalism, writing skills, work ethic, communication skills, punctuality etc. that are not specific to my desired program, but are still important and relevant. -
haha sorryyyyy! I just didn't realise that this was even a possibility D: I feel like the university should just accept them ALL to compensate for the emotional roller coaster. The worst part is that this is a school i am applying to, too!

So my friend is applying to PhD programs in a different subject... He was notified of an acceptance today at one of his top choice schools (after rejections from a couple others)!!! A few hrs later, he was told that it was a "system error" and he did not actually get in This makes me TERRIFIED to find out/announce my results ://

In-Person vs. Skype Interview--- Advice Wanted
katieliz456 replied to katieliz456's topic in Interviews and Visits
Ooooh, that makes sense! I'm glad to know i will be able to "survive" out in a rural area, if necessary Update on original post: I decided to fly out for the interview. I was able to find plane tix for under $300 RT and a hotel for under 100/night, so I figured it'd be worthwhile : ) -
Hmm, I don't think it should really be a problem. The website probably specified that so people don't use friends/family/professors as their "professional" letters. For other areas of study, it seems to be a common practice for professors/PIs to just sign off on a letter written by a TA or grad student who really knows the applicant. I help in a research lab, and spend 10+ hours/week with the doctoral students who supervise, so when I asked for a letter of rec, they helped write it and give input, but the PI (who i've only had a handful of conversations with) is listed as the official "recommender".

Yep, same here! And I hope the info in my signature can be of some use to next season's applicants. I think it's interesting to look at others in my prospective program who have similar stats and see where they applied and what their outcomes were. It seems more "personal" (and probably more accurate) than just seeing the average GRE scores on schools' websites

In-Person vs. Skype Interview--- Advice Wanted
katieliz456 replied to katieliz456's topic in Interviews and Visits
That's a good idea to ask for the itinerary! I agree that it would be fun to meet with students and faculty and really get to chat with them. It seems like funded interviews/visits are mainly for doctoral programs... I haven't heard of too many M.S. programs that reimburse for travel : ( I probably wasn't clear in my first post, but I meant that the Fall 2013 application season is the first time BU has included an interview as part of their application. I'm expecting there to be a lot of uncertainty & little bumps, because it is new for the faculty, committees, etc. It is also my first year (and hopefully last!) applying to schools The other school I applied to that has an interview has been doing it for years, so it's pretty easy to ask past applicants what to expect for that one. Random, but I noticed you were accepted to a program at Baylor (congrats on the acceptances, btw!!). Were you able to visit? What is the area like? I've heard that it's really out in the middle of nowhere, but it seems like a fairly large school so I'd assume there are a decent amount of young-ish people around?
