  1. This may be a tad random, but I just discovered a FANTASTIC resource (and distraction!) for us poor student clinicians: https://www.facebook.com/SpeechieFreebies It's a FB page called "Speechie Freebies" and they post tons of links everyday for free resources (activities, games, printables) for different speech/language skills Looking through all of the creative activities is a great distraction from all of this admissions nonsense
  2. I've been trying to mark those as spam, too, but it hasn't seemed too successful :/ And I think the title thing can be tricky, since some clinical faculty "only" have a Master's. If I'm not absolutely positive about their correct title, or if there is conflicting information, I usually use "Professor" to be safe!
  3. I think they are doing decisions in waves. They sent out both acceptances AND rejections yesterday, so I wouldn't assume anything. They said everyone should have a decision by this Friday (3/15).
  4. Huh, that's really surprising! I'm sorry:( Was it a waitlist, or just an outright rejection? I will not be attending ASU as i have narrowed my options to UNC and a school in TX that i have yet to hear from. (ASU is a great program but the way they structure the clinicals isn't ideal for me, personally.)
  5. Wow! That's awesome that you've already heard back from your top places. It'll be a tough decision, though, and that's smart to wait until the open house and make an informed choice P.S.- we are currently wearing shorts& tank tops out in AZ, and it'll hit 90 by Wednesday--- not that climate should be the deciding factor, but still.... ;D
  6. I would still go for the new experience. It would be nice to make new professional connections and have some different opportunities that you may not have been exposed to at your original institution (different research labs/community projects/NSSLHA activities). All of the schools listed in your signature seem to have really solid programs, so it doesn't seem like you'd be sacrificing anything (academically) to switch!
  7. And since yours are in the same city, you'll get the best of both worlds! You'll get to meet new people and have new professors, but can still stay connected to old friends
  8. I've opted for the "try something new" approach. My undergrad school is in the same area where I was born & raised, and I've decided to branch out and try a new place for grad school. I know that this is probably my last opportunity to pick up and move cross country, and is probably something I should take advantage of as a young person without a family!
  9. Yep! It seems like they emailed several people this morning, but I never got anything. I called to ask when I should expect to hear back (or if i should just assume rejection), and within 30 minutes my online status was updated! Never got an email though haha, so that will probably be coming later this week. I'm guessing they're doing them in "waves" or something? I will not be attending ASU in the fall, though
  10. Have all of you ASU people heard back?
  11. Grrrr. Apparently ASU has been sending out notifications today, and I haven't gotten anything I've already made up my mind that i'm not going there if i get accepted (i want to try a new university/state/region ) but i'd at least like some closure :/
  12. Yikes :/ that is just ridiculous! Did they accept anyone to your program for the school year beginning in August 2012, or did they just "skip" that year's cohort and keep all of the applicants' files on hold until this upcoming year? So weird!
  13. Just remember that those numbers really don't mean much! It seems like a good sign that the adcomm takes more than just stats into consideration-- they pay attention to all of your extracurricular efforts, letters of rec, etc I agree that the anticipation is terrible, though, especially since your school gave such a specific notification time :/
  14. Thanks, jmarti! I'm sending good luck your way, too! I've pretty much narrowed my top choices to either UNC or a school in Texas (that is very competitive, so idk if i even have a chance of acceptance). I'm mostly just curious, and I want to wait until I hear from the remaining 75% of my schools and have some financial info before committing.
  15. Blehhh, i'm SO anxious to hear back from some more schools, hopefully in the next few days! As much as I wanna go outside and enjoy the spring weather (it's finally going to hit the high 80s & low 90s this week!), it'll be hard to pull myself away from my computer and mailbox
  16. Some of my classmates thought aphasia was a motor speech disorder (multiple-choice question on our midterm) :/
  17. The last I knew, she had heard back from about half of the programs, and all had been rejections. I don't think she had stellar recs, or many extracurriculars/work experience/etc. to make up for her numbers.
  18. I sent mine a brief thank-you note after they wrote the letters, and I am planning to send a longer letter when I can share the results and my final decision:) I think the gift thing can be getting into sensitive professional issues, because some schools have strict policies on that. I'm thinking about giving them a small handmade gift (like cookies!), and I've known other people who included a small giftcard to a local coffee place or bookstore
  19. Same here, but i don't think she had many other options. It was either spend 2k + on applications, or spend wayy more than that doing some type of post-bacc/certificate and attempt to boost her GPA. This was a very unusual case, so she had to do unconventional things; i feel really bad for her recommenders haha!
  20. Goood luck!!! Hoping you hear your first great news on Monday!!!
  21. Yeah, we usually hear the "5-8" number, but that is for US schools. I know of a girl who ended up applying to 20 schools-- her stats were very low (I'm thinking GPA below 3.0, Cs and Ds in Speech & Hearing classes, low GRE), so she really wanted to be cautious. The whole admissions process seems to be pretty unpredictable. I was accepted to a school that i thought was a huge "reach", but waitlisted for a school that is lower ranked and has lower average GPA/GRE. If you are flexible geographically, your odds will be much better
  22. That seems like a great opportunity to consider! Do you have experience doing research in undergrad? I feel like that would be the best way to determine how much you'd like doing research in grad school. And do you know exactly what this research would involve? If you'd be stuck in a cubicle doing hours of data entry, it could get pretty boring, but if you're going out to elementary schools and doing tests on CI kids, that might be more enjoyable for a people-person like you I've learned that I, personally, love doing data collection (working with research subjects in the lab, collecting language samples, etc.) but I'm not a fan of doing lit reviews, and running statistical analyses, etc.
  23. I know some schools with a +/- system award a 4.33 for an A+, so that could bring the GPA higher. I didn't think those were usually factored into cumulative GPAs, though.
  24. I think undergrads at my school are generally super unprepared and uninformed. We get a really solid academic background, and lots of research/clinical opportunities, and they tell us the very basic things like "apply to 5-8 schools" and "ask for letters of rec far in advance!", but we really have to go independently to seek out mentorship or information about applying to grad school. :/
